“A secluded spot situated five miles north of popular tourist town Whitby, Runswick Bay is a quaint village hidden behind the peak of a hill. Its rounded coastline is dotted with holiday cottages and whitewashed houses, with immediate access to a sandy beach. Plus, there are water sports to enjoy, as well as nearby caves to explore. Keep an eye on the tide times though, as the beach can disappear when the sea comes in.”
Other secret beaches selected included Man O’War Beach in Dorset, Lantic Bay in Cornwall, Porthdinllaen in Gwynedd, Cuckmere Haven Beach in East Sussex, Aberlady Bay in East Lothian and White Park Bay in Northern Ireland.

Guys, this was something refreshing, what I especially like in England is that people are sociable. Everyone stops and chats a bit, there is no such thing in Sweden. Everyone is devoted to himself😅. Beach looks absolutely gorgeous, lovely scenery 👏👏
oh really? that’s interesting Ervin. yes there is a bit of a hiking/outdoor etiquette (certainly in the North, maybe in the South) where people at least say hello and convey their days feelings to each other. I bet there is a video on just that… 👍

With that hike up and down this beautiful beach would remain a secret to us, Nick and Jill. You wouldn't find these old dinosaur fossils there! 🤣🤣It would be cool to explore the caves though. Always find it funny about the free loo's and the rain in the UK. Lovely coastal town though and we loved seeing some of the flowers blooming! Have no clue what a "snicket" is. Like a Snickers bar? 🤣🤣Love those! Enjoyed the stroll. Thanks for bringing us along.

Hi Jill & Nick, you were very brave to carry on with the descent to the best secret beach after people coming up warned you how steep the ascent was 👍😀 It was certainly a hidden gem. Ooh, caves! Proper ones too! It was a bit scary seeing Jill disappear into the cave - and then a bit of a worry you wouldn't make it out before the tide came in! It was definitely a bench with a view. Nice spot for a picnic. A lovely quaint little town too. Thanks for showing us around. Very enjoyable ❤
thank you Julie and Lucy 🙏 I was very scared seeing Jill bravely entering those caves. we have a fair few fatalities each year along our coastline to landslides. for me, the risk is not worth it but I do understand the attraction. just seeing the formations from the entrance was an overwhelmingly beautiful experience for me. coastal erosion is a real issue the world over though so my thoughts of caving are just that! have an awesome weekend!

Lovely little town, and I particularly like the Doggie Bar, very cute. It would be so nice to stay in one of those cottages and being able to enjoy the beach when the tide was out. It comes in so quickly, I can see how it can be dangerous.

It's a nice beach, but we wouldn't say the best secret beach. That was a steep hill! Cool caves through! Race that tide! Bad show on the fossils - wow that one you did find is amazing! It's a really cute little place. We will definitely give this a visit when we're next out your way! Oh no - wet lunch!! Excellent postbox topper. It's a lovely place, er Jill - it's not sunny!! I think it won the Guardians best seaside location award in 2020, there is definitely someone that lives there with friends very high up in the media! that being said it’s a lovely spot but the Independent also mentions the one in Gwynedd too, definitely worth a look. the surveys are all about to come out for 2024. we’ll be eagerly awaiting disputing them but this one did a number on us, we loved it. well done the Independent!
What a nice find!!! Very pretty beach but much different from what we are used to in Florida!!!! That beach looks cold!!!! So interesting that that beach is only open for part of the day! Hi Nick and Jill love this video. We love visiting beaches with wooly hats on its so bracing. Runswick Bay looks well worth the effort although the rocks were a challenge. Jill has good technique splitting those rocks doesn't look like you need a hammer. Caves are always exciting there were loads here. The sea sounded fantastic. The tide really does come up doesn't it would have to be careful in the caves. Runswick looked a great place no need for a penny that's good as never carry cash and we have been caught out a few times 😀. It seems to rain everyday at the moment doesn't it. Those little cottages looked fabulous with great views. It's definitely somewhere we would enjoy. A really big 👍 from us, hope your weekend is wonderful Best wishes Dave and Dawn ❤️

Best time to visit beaches is when they are empty 🤣🤣! Love the promo for this beach. I can imagine it being a busy beehive in summer with all the amenities and gorgeous views. Can't always believe everything you read but you proved them right on this one. Shame about the rain though I get the feeling it didn't dampen your spirits. 🩷 the letterbox. Ah, Runswick Bay reminds of Junior school. We regularly had our school trips to Runswick Bay. I remember the cafe and a gift shop and the bank from hell! 😂 Great video guys.

We need free parking 😂😂 nice beach & Brunswick Bay nice part of the jurassic coast. Good fossil hunt & Caves . Waves looked a bit rough 😬 Cool looking bunkers. Interesting history about the village land slide . Glad you made it back safely tide came in fast. The bench had a awesome view . oh there is a lot of free parking to be had nearby. I’ll just say when you see the sign, pull over and you can park all day for free! I do love wandering around those snickers, never sure if you will end up in someone’s garden or back garden. we did that a fair few times mind! 😂 I bet the Runswick lot get fed up of people doing that!
Snickety Snickets! Looked like a top day out that, despite the rain and the hill! Worth checking the tide times when visiting! Surprised how the weather still is in the UK, has spring even arrived yet? 🤭 great there were only 10 or so people, it really is a hidden gem!
absolutely freezing here Matt. -3C last Saturday. we’ve not had one day without rain. fields have been turned to lakes, roads into rivers. it’s bonkers! you got out at the right time! 👍

Like 69 and a great watch on a miserable day, really perked me right up! Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay if you want to get fit, walk up and down those hills, steep is not the word lol. Weather it is safe to go in or not, there is no way I would be taking a dip in the North Sea, especially with the way the weather is at the moment - Brrrrrr! Oh dear that must have been a mare to walk down to the beach to find the tide in and I bet a few people get caught out and a very colourful cave troll there as well as a very brave one too :o). Not a fan of the WW2 bunkers to be honest, a blot on the landscape for me and they tend to attract vandals and people who need the loo and there is nothing worse than seeing a dog bag left on the beach, the disrespect always enrages and astonishes me. I was just going to say what a great place to stop for lunch and the rain started, yes, so typical for this year but great to see the British Bulldog spirit. Loved that post box and the snikets but my car will be parked very firmly at the bottom of the bay :o). Thanks for that, I needed cheering up, cheers Alan
“vandals and people that need the loo”, love that. really tickled me. now I know where I’ll be going for a wee next time I’m caught short! really is a lovely spot and id love to get there when the cafe is open. found it really charming, much more so than when I’m normally wizzing through to do a section of the Cleveland Way or a massive hike. really can appreciate how and why people would want to stay there and just take it all in. hope your feeling better soon. Before modern healthcare and improved diets, there used to be quite a lot of people with bowed legs. My Grandfather used to say, when describing someone with bowed legs, "they couldn't stop a pig in a snicket". Not something that is acceptable today, but Grandad thought that referring to somebody's disability directly (bow-legged and bandy-legged were common terms that he hated) was rude and crass.
I went to Runswick with my friend and his parents when I was about ten years old. My friend's dad had borrowed a works van and he had his missus in the front and us two kids rattling around in the back with all the tools - different times. My friend's mother was a very "proper" lady who always minded her Ps and Qs and expected everybody else to do the same. However, as the van went over the crest of the hill to descend into Runswick Bay she yelled a terrified, "F***********CK!!!" at the top of her lungs. The one and only time I ever heard her swear.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed Runswick Bay. That small stretch of coast between Whitby and Saltburn is my happy place for many many reasons.

I’ve been caught out by that tide before. it’s a particularly bad bit of coastline where the tide always comes completely in, usually a good hour and a half before the advertised high time. its a real walk of shame inland too as there is no adjacent cliff path! fooled me once I shall not fall for it again! hope you have a smashing weekend.

Hi guys that was awesome loved it from the walk down the hill to the beach and both of you chasinging the tide was so entertaining and those caves jill went in were so quirky . loved the cottages with the plants everywhere and the quirky footpaths around the cottages. My favourite GenXers! What a fab subject, oh my gosh... that beach looks beautiful, but my god, that steep incline is a no from me!! My knees were aching just watching you guys go down! It's a stunning beach I have to say, nice to see people out and about enjoying the beach and the coast even with that blowy weather. Oh that was some fabulous singing Nick 🦕🦕 Those caves looked so epic, would be totally inclined to go have a wander inside! The view at the cafe is pretty lovely, can totally imagine sitting there enjoying an ice cream! Well, it is the UK, rain is the new sun it seems :( bring on better weather i say! I'm not surprised to read in the description box that Porthdinllaen in Gwynedd is on this list too, its near us and soo beautiful 😃🏴 Runswick Bay looks gorgeous too and like you said, idyllic looking. Nice that its quiet too and with caves to explore plus its near Whitby which after seeing yours and Alan Metalmans videos is lovely. Very interesting look around, we have been there a few times, we stayed many years ago at the campsite for a long weekend at Easter, by the end of the weekend I felt much fitter that I did on the first day - image if you did a fortnight you could do Everest haha 😂 Hope you’re both good, lovely video, all the best, David & Rachel ❤️

While the parking isn't cheap there it is so much cheaper than what we have just experienced in the Lake District!!! I don't think my knees would enjoy the walk down or my lungs the walk up lol. So my body might shout PARK AT THE BOTTOM! But I'd need to shoot some shots from the top if nothing else. What a lovely piece of coastline. The tide times sound like a key bit of information. Nice looking cafe, although there looked to be a ninja on the roof of it while you were talking lol.

Hi Jo Morgs and Boo! we had a lovely weekend thank you hope you guys did too! We were at the spring Whitby goth festival! Runswick is a must if you guys are in the area can just see Morgs giving you a piggy back Jo and and carry Boo up that hill 🤣 have a great week ahead 👍

Hi Nick & Jill I love a winter beach walk … oh hang on it’s May in a few days time 😱😟I’m finding it really hard to believe this is a secret beach. It has so much going for it Water sports centre, caving, fossiling, massive expanse of sand, on a well know walking trail, not one but 2 car parks & the obligatory closed cafe 😂In all seriousness it looks fab … for a summer trip I take so much clutter … deck chairs, picnic, towels , woolly jumpers haha, newspapers, that I’d defo be parking at the bottom. Tbh the prices sounded quite reasonable. The cafe looked great & im sure would be buzzing in the summer. I love those ceanothus aka liquorice allsort plants, such a gorgeous colour. Used to have one in our garden … it got too big so I “pruned” it & it died 😂 Trip to the garden centre required haha Great video 😃🥰🤗🤗xx

you really can get lucky on those beaches. we never spend too much time looking. We have also found jet on the beach.

That hill look good for hill running training tho not too ace on the knees on tarmac 😂I'm not sure I'd say it's the UK's best secret beach myself as I reckon some of those Scottish beaches would give this place a run for its money. Having said it sure is a lovely beach and those caves are pretty cool if you want to risk your life. The area itself looks well worth a visit even in the rain. Well you have to embrace the rain as it does a lot of that, especially of late. Oh and no wonder those professional walkers were walking slow with the miles they'd already bagged. All you need is a steep downhill to finish you off 🙂It brought a smile to my face when Jill said corrosion instead of erosion 😂I do that myself
🤣 we both didn’t realise she’d said that 🤣 she says bunker as well instead of pill box although once it gets under the sand it will be a bunker! There was a few mentioned in the article to be fair Aberlady Bay in East Lothian made the list from Scotland! Yeah those walkers really had walked some miles and actually said they need a days rest! well, not much a secret if it's in the papers and now you're busting it wide open! that's quite a climb down and up. good thing there's a railing at the least. obv this was a chilly day, does it warm up enough in the summer to swim even if it's only "good?" we have water quality reports for lake michigan beaches too. it'd be fun to time lapse the tide. i'm fascinated by it closing for half the day. run jilly ruuuuuuun! 🤭cutest troll i've seen. 😘 the caves are super cool. speaking of poo bags (shame on the people for leaving them), holy crap this comment has gotten so long and we haven't even made it to town. glad you packed your rain coats and your lunch since the cafe was closed. the glasses cleaning...🤣 have a wonderful week! 🛴❤

The best way to visit a beach is when it's empty...of people 🤣🤣🤣😎! No sunshine but instead a voyage of discovery. Stones, waves, wind and caves. What's not to like. Jill, the only cave I go into with pleasure is my Woman Cave. I'd not even attempt those....NOOOO JIll 😱😱😱! Glad you weren't wearing flipflops. 🤣! Solid hiking boots required. Love your chilly weather adventure. Great spot to come back to in summer. Enjoy your weekend. My Saturday was a blast. 😎👌🙋♀🥝
