- I recently picked up a Honda Grom, so I thought it'd be a great idea to introduce you guys to the dude that got me into motorcycles, my buddy Dakota Neff. You 100 percent can do this as a beginner. Schooled mechanics are great, but those who learn through error are just stronger in their confidence imo

Yeah, I agree. Been messing with 2 strokes myself for more than a year.
That said, it is never exactly a good time, I mean, I'm into it, but even I get stressed the H out sometimes and wish I made better decisions.

It ran fine, in my opinion it's running a bit rich and I don't blame him with it being used on road, if he wanting it crisp he would go more lean nice on track but on road nah rather run rich and get more hours out the bike then have that crisp noise and get less hours out the top end, bike is fine
@@bobthenob9017 good point, but a little rich/crisp.. it’s .. well.. not really running as evident in the video hahaha. But I get your point. Also, idle is controlled by the pilot jet which hardly affects running rich, aka won’t affect the cylinder blabla too much as you I suppose are stating. You could run rich on the main but have the pilot jetted well..

@What’s not the braking part, he is talking about the engine itself. 2 strokes get oil from their fule and when you engine brake, your rpms are high but because you only have a carburetor your engine starves of oil

I owned a trx450 for 4 years and did some small mods so it was quick but nothing nuts. The first time a friend let me drive his also slightly modded banshee I could not believe how fast that thing was. It felt like a bike. The powerband was so real and felt almost like a turbo! Such a nutty machine!
2 strokes are incredible!
Absolutely loved the video! Just keep in mind you don't want to engine break on 2 strokes. They only really get direct oil contact when you're on the gas.

this is wrong, oil stays in the crankcase for a long ass time, you dont hurt it by engine braking. engine brake down a steep ass hill and tke the top end off, itll still be oily as fu. Ive been engine braking my street bike 2 strokes for over a decade with 10s of thousnds of miles with no harm done at all

honestly, minus the cost of the grom and engine you can do the swap for like $200. but getting a running 125 or 250 2 stroke is the expensive bit if you already have a gorm
Probably the craziest one I've seen with a 2T is a banshee swapped grom, obviously not in person unfortunately cause I'd definitely want to try it 😆

Could recommend a lectron carburetor kit for the 2 stroke yz125 engine, it's around 500$ and It could increase fuel economy.

Bad ass build! I love that. Yamaha powered Honda and owner is wearing a Kawasaki shirt. My only grips is the bike should start first kick at top-dead-center with no throttle. It was strange seeing you have to start with full throttle 🤔. Almost like theres something iffy with the fueling.

this is the exact swap ive wanted to do on my grom since i got it just plan onletting the stock motor grenade itself and ill swap it then lol oh and also all stock groms that i have ridden or ridden around will all hit about 65-70 stock with no wind its the small things that matter on theses lol

I’m going to be honest, this was my first time riding a 2 stroke. Besides the one moped I had way back in the day but that doesn’t count.

No throttle if choke is on, or you will surely flood. Hitting some throttle as you kick can help a tough starter.

Kicking a 125 should not be difficult at allll. If it starts hard it's jetted wrong. If it's hot it should flame first kick with a crack of throttle... The saying if you can start it you can ride it came from the old open bikes like 400 and up displacement. Not 125s lol. Still rad idea and build. Seeing the expansion pipe on a grom looked sick! Looked like the engine came factory... well done!

Kickstarter hits footpeg can't have everything. Impressive # of tuners here. Do they still tune with needle taper and slide cutaways. I had a 490 Yam that was pretty fussy to get it right. You thinking your going to lean it out to make power be my guest. How many top ends have you replaced. The guy barely got that bike warmed up.

That bike sounds like its running rich down low which would explain the hard starting. The pilot circuit is not happy it shouldn't burp or sputter rolling on throttle (or die like it did at that stop sign) and its rough and too smokey at mid throttle. I would check the plugs and maybe thin out the main jet 1 or 2 sizes, make sure the air filter isn't dirty, and check the needle position. I'm not sure about the YZ but most carbs work best with second clip position from top. dropping the clip riches it and raising leans it. Also I would open up the air screw a quarter turn and see how the bike responds at idle and roll on throttle. Or she could just be cold in which case DO NOT rip it like that until she gets some heat into her.

The thing is he just could have gotten a modded derbi or aprilia 50 or even a 125 aprilia sumo or a Honda and it have more or the same power for like €1500 and it would be full size bike which weighs less than the grom

How did this cost that much? You can buy a used 01 yz for 1000? Full engine rebuild 1200 if needed?custom sprocket 120 maybe $300 in custom motor mounts=7000 lol
You know how working on cars and bikes goes. Usually end up taking a few trips/ordering more when you’re working on a big project. Also, not really finding any yz125s for $1,000 near us

wonder how fast it goes since a 50cc 2 stroke moped can already get to 50mph just with the right tuning and parts also idk if u ever used a bike with kickstart but you need to build compression not jsut kick nonstop untill u lose ur legg
50cc mopeds go 50mph stock with restrictions removed lmao tuned 70-80cc mopeds hit 140-150kmh easily

@@Jay-rd6fe since I cant post a link search for a video called "Derbi Gpr malossi top speed NEW" he does 160kmh+ to speedometer so 140-150 real speed. Thats just one example. 125cc dirtbikes do 170-180kmh on road tires and longer gearing lol so 150 is easy.
