About the ending of this game: The entrance to the boss feels like it was going to be a whole level but is more like the great hall in the original crash bandicoot.
The reason im saying this is because theyres actually a fairly sized chunk of level design left in it that has platforming and all the fun stuff but then it just ends with a dead end.

Notes aside - few months after this video someone posted a cover of Australian release of Kao 3. So it was released outside Europe, however in small quantity, therefore it was considered lost (for some sort of an urban legend). If developer inteded for something like "cinematic platformer", it was checked by a brutal reality, where platformer as a genre was in a crisis state. That's why it was released in small amount and only on PC.
Good to know Kao was revived and thanks to CZcams.

I would like to correct you. I'm from Czech Republic (and huge fan of KAO since my childhood) and here this game actually WAS released... it even had a full translation (czech dubbing included). I actually have some evidence that the game was released in English in Australia. I know for a fact that it was also released in Russian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Basque, Spanish, Turkish, Dutch and French, but most of these were very limited in quantity. Another control style that could work for the tube race levels (since they keep a set orientation) is having the vehicle move towards whatever angle your stick is pressed, like if you press straight up Kao could take the shortest route to the very top of the screen and for more precise sections you can guide him with smaller movements

Looks like they were told half way through the development that the game won't be released internationally because no one cares, so they just went "fuck it", didn't bother finishing it and just released it "as is" in Poland so that the effort that already went into making it wouldn't be wasted. Shame, it's actually the only one of the 3 major games that looks somewhat appealing to me. Were it released on PS2, I would've probably bought it.

  • @SmashQueen

When you said how there were few NPCs and things to be found in the hub, I was reminded of Fur Fighters. In a good way. The hub is a village and every home has a minigame unlocked through bringing a parent or spouse home. Little triangular tokens are littered around, as are weapons.
That said, I'd like to recommend it. The game tends to get a little weird, like the main villainous feline having a pet human (that meows), but it's pretty solid. Fair warning though: it has a Harsher in Hindsight moment in the first world.
Minor edit: If you choose to take up FF, make sure to look over the control options. The default one is kind of odd.

How about a review of Mini Ninjas? It's a very original action platformer that kinda came out of nowhere and is worth completing 100% (the secret scrolls unlock new techniques that make the game even more fun) and the 5 characters each have something to go for and aren't like some kind of HM slaves that are only in your party to open a specific kind of door! The archer is the best character BTW...

Actually, third Kao was supposed to be much bigger adventure, but because 3D platformers were losing on popularity and shooters were gaining it, the game budget was cut and they had to release much shorter game than intended. Also it is pretty cool how first Kao was programmed by bunch of IT students and it is still quite popular(in poland Kao is a legend).

These Kao videos have been my favorite on the entire channel since Silent hill. I love how well you compare games within a series to each other and draw a lot of connections. Naturally, that only works when the game series sports multiple titles but I love it nonetheless. I feel like I just discovered this channel and am watching the good old Ty reviews once again. Well done NitroRad, you're videos are always a pleasant surprise to see in my subscription box. Speaking of Ty, I'm curious if you ever downloaded the HD steam port of the game. Of course it's identical to the original so it wouldn't really warrant a review but I am curious if you ever gave it a try.

Another NitroRad video, another couple moments of confusion while I comprehend his pronunciation of certain words. I'm a fairly new subscriber, but if I say so myself, from what I've seen, you are sorely underrated.

Well... I can say that this game will be the game of my childhood, even if it sucks. I really loved to play it when I was VERY young. I think it was one of the first game in my life. And I'm from Russia, so... Not only Poland was lucky to try it. I even have a disk of this game getting dusty somewhere on my shelf.

  • @granvillimus

I've a few recommendations, some of which you have probably heard of (not all of which i've played)-
    - Kya Dark Lineage
    - Haven Call of the King
    - Legend of Kay
    - Ape Escape trilogy
    - Pitfall the Lost Expedition
    - Asterix & Obelix XXL and XXL2 (XXL was localized as Asterix & Obelix Kick Buttix, XXL2 is EU only)
    - Death Jr series (not played any of these, heard some meh things)
If I can remember any more then i'll mention them.
Since you covered some of Kao's GBA games, there are plenty of other GBA versions of console platformers. Some of which are based on games you've already made reviews for. Some of the best are Rayman 3 (which is a very good 2D platformer kind of the spiritual successor to the original Rayman) and Rayman Raving Rabbids (which is also similar to the original Rayman and GBA Rayman 3, seems closer to a Rayman 4 than what the console Rabbids game became).
Also for kicks, check out the GBA version of the aforementioned Asterix & Obelix XXL. It shocks and impresses most people to see that they pulled off there, a real 3D platformer (built with textured polygons) on GBA.

I think it'd be cool if you checked out the Pac-Man World trilogy. Save for a few exceptions, there seems to be a lack of peeps on CZcams & beyond that observe or delve into the extended Pac-Man franchise beyond the original game (& ,to a lesser extent, Smash Bros.), which is a shame to me, especially in the case of these semi-obscure platforming gems.

Some recommendations I have are the Chibi-Robo! series of games, not all that obscure but there are 5-ish games and not to many people have done a look at the whole series. Also, Spirits and Spells which had a GBA and GameCube release in North America. Whatever you choose, I just wanted to say keep up the great work. I really enjoy your videos. : )

Actually it is more complicated than that. 3D platformers are on the rise compared to recent years and in PL KAO is very popular(bcs it used to be attached to gaming press and every kid played it, sooo nostalgia is huge) and every major game reviewing channel made some kao retrospectives. Kao even became quite popular in memes. So basically when they released kao 2 on steam, they saw that there is hype and they got some money.
