- In this video we'll be going over the best common magic items, which is the lowest rarity of magic items in the game, a rarity that makes them pretty easy to get a hold of in most campaigns, and is usually relegated to the more useless or flavorful items.

"Players can't loot spellwrought tattoo."
-Pulls out skinning knife
DM: “Okay. Now you have a fancy patch of skin. What are you going to do with it?”
Player: “I’m going to sew it onto my own body!”
*A CON save or two later*
DM: “Good for you. You now have a patch of foreign skin grafted onto your arm. It still isn’t actually a part of you, so the tattoo remains inert, but at least it looks cool.”
@@chrisschoenthaler5184 At least they didn't try to eat it.
@Colin Zayd Fucking bots advertising shit
@@chrisschoenthaler5184 But when the person unattunes with it, it turns back into a needle. And dying causes people to unattune, I would assume.

My favorite common magic item is the Unbreakable Arrow.
With the unbreakable arrow you have a dollar store Unmovable Rod. Any Huge, Complex, Deadly Trap becomes a mere inconvenience by jamming the Unbreakable Arrow into the moving mechanism, it's a true monkey wrench if used right.
Yes, a cheap dagger or climbing pitons can do that too. However they are breakable and with the arrow, the mechanism will break before the arrow does. One Unbreakable Arrow could save you from being crushed in a compacting room/hallway, and two could be used to help your character climb most surfaces.
*( I should have waited until the end of the movie.)
You forgot something about the clockwork amulet, it negates the need to roll, so if you have disadvantage, it doesn't matter
Oh, damn, that changes everything. Nice catch.
Retard barbarian cures cancer on next episode of dnd
@@almisamiRAW is a little flakey here I'd say. "When you make an attack roll while wearing the amulet, you can forgo rolling the d20 to get a 10 on the die." - it says 'the d20' not 'the d20s', so a DM could likely rule it could only be used outside of advantage/disadvantage or (what I would do) allow the player to forgo rolling 'the d20' they are targeting with this effect and then still roll the other one and take the result as appropriate.
@@paperhatboy Nope, completely disagree. It doesnt say it replaces one roll of the d20. It says "When you make an attack roll...you can forgo rolling the d20..." Meaning that for that attack roll you dont roll the d20. If it replaced a single roll of the die it would specify with language like "you can forgo one roll of the d20 to get a 10 the die". But the language is specific in that it tells you not to roll the d20 die when making an attack, so for that attack you forgo rolling the die at all and the guaranteed result of the die would be 10 whether it's rolling for disadvantage or advantage. Both theoretical rolls would be 10 so the attack roll result is a 10
@paperhatboy definitely disagree. It's basically a variation of portent, so would you say portent is nullified by disadvantage? No you would not. Case closed...
The awakened shrub qualifies for the sidekick creature in the new Tasha's book. You could literally grow a grove of little helpers that can take care of home fort for you.
Thats a really good Idea! Thanks, our druid will be happy for having someone of trust who can care for our player home.
I can see the chaos unfolding from this. The hedges of the group home are actually rouges with sneak attack. Or a garden maze with a bunch of dagger wielding shrubs
@@ronaldshaw4309 so...the maze from goblet of fire? I mean the actual hedges.... cause that wasnt your average shrubbery
Yes, would be quite funny waking up seeing the dead bodies at the edge of the property. Though I don't suggest doing this if you are playing waterdeep.
Ah yes! Sentient brooms fetching buckets of water.
Used to play yugioh and when I clicked on this video I got a wave of nostalgia when I realized that you're Duellogs. Cool to see your vids again man.

Eberron is such a great setting, so happy that a lot of the magic items from there are on this list
Well, this is going to be nice for my artificer.
This video couldn't have come at a better time. My players are going to meet a magic item trader next session.
That awakened shrub would be amazing to "plant" at the door of your tower.
"Hey Shrubsby, anyone come by while I was out?"
"Sure boss, some Girl Rangers selling cookies, a missionary from the Reformed Church of Umberlee, the mailman, and, oh yeah, a couple of Dargon Blooddrinker's goons were across the road watching the house all day."
"Hmm... I might have to move on him sooner rather than later. Thanks buddy, let me know if they're back."
Plant goodberries in the pot of awaking
wut
I'd love to see a video that ranks the 5 metallic dragons, and the 5 chromatic dragons, and puts their ancient forms all in a top 10 and ranks them in terms of lethality.
Clockwork amulet is the one that gets stronger with your character and thas why its soo good
The awakened shrub is even better than in this video with the new sidekick rules. Sidekicks can be non-humanoids and get levels in different classes. I believe the plant only qualifies for warrior, but that's leaps in power above the base stat block
Actually, since the only requirements for the other two sidekick classes are the ability to speak one language, the Awakened Shrub can be an Expert or Spellcaster as well since it knows one language spoken by its creator. (Druid Shrub anyone?)
@@digifreak90 yep, since it is a plant itself it should gain bonuses when dealing with anything plant based since it understands them
You are a friend of Nature, I am Nature.-some shrub.
@@digifreak90 it has no hands though so spellcaster might be a tough sell
At higher levels, artificers can ignore the wizard requirement of the hat of wizardsy.
Me: A item that lets me cast find familiar regardless of class and no other investment than getting most other magic items?!
Characters are temporary, my owl familiar is eternal!
Just bully them like the parents in Harry Potter with hundreds of owls
I love being an Eldritch knight and instead of taking war caster I can use the hat or the ruby! I'm so excited!!!
The wood focus would be great for a scribes wizard, if they take the elemental adept feat for the desired type and make sure to take a spell of the desired damage type at every level, they can freely benefit from this damage at all times as they can cast other damage spells using the damage type of the other spell
I like the spellwrought, but I made it act more like the other tattoos. I put tattoo artists in my world, and some can apply higher level spells than others, the cost of the application is higher as well because it's permanent, but if you bring buddy boy a spell scroll, you get a bit off. What tattoo artist can apply which tattoos depends entirely on the artist's INT.... And by 3rd level, you're already paying like 1k gp for a single tattoo (but come on, it's a free third level spell), granted the artist you're going to can actually apply it. And if they can't, well, you just gotta travel around to find one who can, and the world is notoriously unsafe for travellers, to the point where the main trading company hires mercenaries to guide their caravans because of the monsters that roam everywhere, and adventurers are almost unheard of bc it's so damn easy to just die.
So a world where Ita popular to have tattoos of power? Man that would make an interesting culture
One campaign I played a thief rogue warforged that used tools to make magic potions. Since I could use items as a bonus action I was the party healer, which fit because my character used to be a doctor.
- Breathing bubble = like Cap of Water Breathing but 1 hour duration and a common item
- Horn of Silent Alarm = Very useful for if your party is split up and want to remain stealthy
- Pole of Collapsing = Before you get a Bag of Holding one of the most awkward thing to carry is a 10ft pole.
- Willowshade Oil = not even a magic item but costs as much as a common magic item, this reverses Petrification!
I'd put Spell Scrolls of Cantrip and Level 1 variety on this list as those levels are common and have no failure chance, if you REALLY need to cast Mending just once to close a broken chain link to close a door then it can be annoying if you roll low on your arcana check. Also scrolls don't take up an attunement slot. Hat of Wizardry can be nice to keep in your Bag of Holding to use if you're ever really stuck on a puzzle and need ONE cantrip you never through you'd need like to Freeze a 5ft cube of water.
Spellwrought Tattoos are great but they are more expensive, XGE says that a Cantrip Scroll is only 15GP to craft, the rules for making the "special needle" for creating Spellwrought tattoo (of Cantrip or Lv1 Spell) on the hero's skin is 50GP. They are disproportionately useful for non-casters and according to the rules are the same cost to create whether Lv1 spell or Cantrip. Cantrip scrolls are fantastic for casters as they are SO CHEAP.
How does a 10ft pole fit in a 4ft^3 bag?
@@creldest it takes in mass not size, you could fit a whole carpet there and it considers it as rolled up basically.. i think
@@SebastiansSebastian-fc4pj so, double checking, it uses weight and volume, but gives no concrete dimensions on the bags interior. So you’re correct, a rolled up carpet that doesn’t exceed 500lbs / 64ft^3 would fit. A possible loophole is the bag uses pounds, which is a measure of weight, and not mass, meaning you might be able to fit more gold in the bag on the moon than on earth.
@@creldest being on the moon would be interesting gameplay
In the game where I play we have a house rule that health potions auto heal you 10 hp instead of 2d4+2 but to compensate that healing potions are much rarer than usual
We do it where, if you take your action in combat it heals the max amount, if you use your bonus action you roll for the healing.
@@heir8095 that's also cool but for us it's just straight use bonus action boom 10hp but then again when we kill a dragon or somthing we will only find like 1 or 2 healing potions among its hoard
I also do this after watching Dungeon Dudes work, but I don't give my players health potions all the time. They take a lot of work to make and so they are rare and not cheap.
Knew I reconised your voice, been watching you wow content for some time, always liked how deep you went with that content. Recently started with dnd, cant wait to watch your content on it. Ty for the great videos, keep it up.
Grow a magic shrub and give it a magic tattoo for a communication spell and you have a lookout for your base.
Make it hug and fuse with others to get a plant golem, then get tattoos on its huge surface
I can't believe some game designer at WoTC had to design a whole list of magical items that provide no practical advantage to anyone.
Not everything needs to be purely focused around practicality; Sometimes, you just wanna throw in a few items that are there to add a little bit of flavor.
The Masquerade Tattoo seems really interesting, especially in a play setting with a lot of tattoos or if they’re important, such as in Thay or if you’re doing something in Eberron
Didn't know you also make DnD videos. Pretty nice to see
You have made me vary happy as an artificer who can craft/create common magic items
Loved your duel logs channel man, would be funny to see FaDe but for character builds
The DMG describes how new Common magic items that cast a first level spell once per day can be easily crafted. So an Amulet of Cure Wounds used by a Life Cleric would basically be a Common Healing potion usable once every day. A Whistle to Find Familiar would allow every party member to eventually summon a Familiar. A robe of Feather Falling would work once every day without being consumed. Many such Common items are possible.
Train a bunch of commoners and then cover their entire body to kamehameha for days, the whole sky is going to be blinding to the gods
Can you remember what page/chapter?
@@Treblaine Page 285 under Maximum Spell Level. " a common item might confer the benefit of a 1st level spell once per day" The "How to" is from Tasha's most recently. You need a formula for the item, you need some part of a CR 1-3 creature for a common magic item, it takes one week to craft and costs 50 gold.
@@archlittle6067 Very nice, a ring of mage armor would be great for a dex based character,
@@Treblaine Thanks! A Find Familiar item allows your whole party to have a flying Monkey familiar. The Monkey can pick up and fly elves and smaller races right over an obstacle. You can even give NPCs or a Sidekick such a familiar. Just make the Magic Item a dagger and have a fighter bond with it. If the DM wants an NPC to run off with it, just have the fighter summon it. How about a Magic Missile item? The whole party and their familiars could get one for chump change. For 5 PCs and their Monkeys that is approximately 100 points of damage in one round. Good luck!
Whoa!!! I watch your Yu-Gi-Oh! Content!!! I didn’t know you had dnd content!!! What a win!!
I feel like you could use the perfume to scout for big bads disguised as humans...
That is a very good idea
Clockwork amulet seems good if you have disadvantage
Get 10 of em and never worry about missing a hit
7:58 - I'm still new to DnD, but if we go by RAW, there is a slight detail we need to consider: The Hat of Wizardry counts as a Spellcasting Focus, eliminating the need for material components, but it does not eliminate the need for any somatic components to be performed with a free hand. RAW says you can use the same hand you're holding the material components for the somatic component as well - so a spellcasting focus which is also a weapon (e.g. a staff, a weapon with a Ruby of the Warmage 8:54 ) would classify as such, since the focus essentially is your material components - but technically doesn't apply to a hat worn on your head. So if you're holding a non-spellcasting focus weapon and/or shield in both of your hands, you'd still need the War Caster Feat ( 8:44 ) in order to fulfill any somatic components of a spell.
Now, Rule of Cool (aka. most DMs) would allow it to work anyway, probably, as logically you're "holding" your focus with your head and can still make the required hand gestures with a hand where you're holding something different rather than the focus itself, but RAW would constitute the situation like this, but correct me if I'm reading this wrong, please.
Yep, you're absolutely right. It just says you can use it as a spellcasting focus, it doesn't override the requirement to have a free hand to access material components or your focus. If that worked casters would all just strap wands to their heads like unicorn horns to keep their hands free.
I would imagine with the Hat of Wizardry, that using it would still require the caster to use their hands. In the description it doesn't say either way that it uses hands or not. Think about Presto from the 80's D&D Cartoon series. That is how I would rule it as a DM.
Excellent video.
Moon Touched Sword is a great low level treasure just as a way to bypass resistance to non-magical weapons. Also silvered weapons/ammunition are a great drop for different resistances.
Masque Charm is a fantastic 1/day Hat of Disguise. Also, shiftweave is like 90% as good as a Hat of Disguise, changing your clothing but not your face.
I love Ruby of the War mage thematically.
Get a plant of awakening
Use your familiar to cast dragon's breath on it
Boom a plant turrent to deter enemies
love the content :) so here is one for the acho
Have always been interested in D&D, but don't know where to start. Could you make a vid on the "Top 10 basics necessary for beginners?"
There's alot of set up. The group I played with a few years ago did everything on the fly without any official aid. And the books you need are kind of expensive. A top 10 for beginners would be really cool though.
You can get the 3 main books for free as PDF just by googling them
@@PapiCito Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks!
@@PapiCito Do they come in audio books? cause reading is hard.
@@dylanbrewer8605 anyflip.com has the books, so you can print out what you want or need. Or just have it bookmarked
orb of shieldings only issue is that it requires attunement, meaning it's gonna get tossed in the magic junk drawer the moment that something else could be attuned there
Another great use for the Masquerade Tattoo is a moon druid, you can work out some signals with the party to communicate while wild-shaped like green for yes and red for no. Even if your DM rules your fur or feathers cover the tattoo, you can still affect your nose or beak or talons or claws
The first idea with the pot of awaiting was to get a lot of them and make a moving maze with riddles since they can speak. Magic landscaping. I can also see wizards having a one-up contest like who can have the better lawn with these!
In regards to your comment on the low number of common magic items in the DMG, the only common level items in the DMG are the Potion of Climbing, basic Potions of Healing, and Spell Scrolls of Cantrip or 1st level.
Never even heard of the Hat of Wizardry... what a lovely common item. That's really nice. Super cute honestly
the hat is absolutely sick
omg
The campaigns I'm in are low gold campaigns... so single use items (like potion of healing) aren't appealing since they usually just heal the damage we just took. Finding them is great, but buying them is usually scrapping together enough to get a healing potion.
Hey healing tattoos, that way it has higher initial cost and lower healing amount but get multiple, then you can heal whenever you want and never buy again. One tattoo was like 50g
Ok
1 Get all of the stone focus types. Cut them into small beads. Find some magical tread. make necklace focus of protection /ward. Affect reduce all damage types by 1d4 on reaction. once per day can reflect one spell. roll to see where it sent.
2 seem really useful for some crazy things. spelljammers must be packed with them.
3 note to DMs: watch what kind of plant you let them put into the pot. may be game breaking. free food or walking trap, Poison / thorny/ man eating
plants may be a pain.
4 limit how many they can get or get ready for some purple man action
5 You shall not pass
6 Some where in D&D. Some one is covered head to toe in them.
7 repeat number 1
8 so many uses
9 camouflage.
When did you start doing D&D videos?! I’m pumped, I loved your wow content!
This is great, but please do another one on Moon Druid (as you suggested) for CR2-4! ☺️🌙🐺🦅🐍
Being able to grab a clockwork amulet practically for free as an battlesmith artificer is...bonkers
Who said you can wear 1? Wear them till you need max strenght to not snap your neck and become a demigod
Now I can't stop picturing a plated bladesinger with a big conical hat on his head.
As a person who has a history of missing attack rolls, I’d sell my characters soul to a Archlich for that Clockwork Amulet
Why? It's COMMON?!?!
@@joshuaarnett762 I can ignore my attack roll *and* still get my modifier to my roll. I have a bad history of my d20 hating me so having a 10 once per day is kinda nice.
@@TheOneWhoReportsForDuty but you don't need to sell your soul. The price is (1d6+1)X10 gp, at most it would cost 70gp. I have a level 2 dude with 200.

Fun fact that a certain level artificers and rogues gain the ability to use magic items for carlisa what class they were intended for. Making the hat of wizard a fantastic utility tool for artificers and trickster. As it happened is a spell-casting focus and the ability to pull any wizard cantrips out of your butt whenever you want as a non wizard class is very useful.
The Hat of Wizardry would be a perfect magic item for an Arcane Trickster.
would you ever think about doing some videos about the lore of DND? There is a lot and its all gold. Would love to hear you explain the fall of the Netheril for example.
You could also use the awakened shrub as a shop tender. Because it can speak any language you can, you can leave it at the shop you made and it will tell people what to do when you're away
Clockwork Amulet + Archery Fighting Style + Dex Mod = easy 15 at Level 1. Moon-Touched Sword gets around that non-magical damage clause in non-magic martial classes.
Plus proficiency so 17 and it would be level 2 since that's when you get your fighting style.
@@MageLeaderInc Fighters get a fighting style at level one. You don't have to be a Ranger to use ranged weapons. 😁
Two-Handed (PHB, p. 147). "This property is relevant only when you attack with the weapon, not when you simply hold it."
Hello.
The Pot of Awakening: A good use of this item is to grow the plant and then transplant it to where it can be useful. Should I gain this item, I would plant the plant in a garden area, to give warning(s) about those not allowed into the area, entering the garden area. Sort of like an alarm spell, but without the ability to be detected by a magic spell of detecting magics. Another use might be to plant the awakened plant near a watch tower, to alert those in the tower of creatures or people attempting to sneak by or into a secured area.
The Moon Touched Sword is very useful at low levels. Especially for those without Darkvision. My Centaur has one, and has modified his armor to enable him to slip the sword through a molded slot in the lower portion of his upper torso's armor, and thus 'hang' the sword in front of his lower chest. This gives light to see by, and frees up his hands to use his Bow efficiently.
Potion of Healing: Yes, a good item for party members to have. Especially at lower levels, when damage can push them down to almost dying. A Ranger with high stats can find enough ingredients using Survival Skill to allow certain party members, like an Artificer, to 'brew up' simple Healing Potions. And so, buying several empty potion vials can be a very good idea when a party sets out on an adventure. Between the Ranger and Artificer, potions can be brewed up as the party travels to the adventure area. Thus giving the party a chance to quickly heal from damage taken in encounters. Also of note is that the basic Healing Potion, 2d4+2 would normally cost the party 50 GP each, which might be 'out of their price range'. Either forcing the party to spend on healing potions, or better gear that they could use during adventuring, such as rope, twine, tools, tents, etc. So, the Ranger-Artificer combo is very useful to low level parties, and lowers the 'cost of business'.
That imbued wood focus would've been great for my sorcerer who only casts cold spells for damage earlier on in the campaign I'm in. Though I'm not sure if my DM would allow Ebberon content.
My friends and I were saved by our Awaken Shrub named Peaches like 3 different times when we decided to be stupid. Awakened Shrubs are game breaking.
I honestly don't know how Logs maintains 2 channels at once that post basically daily together for ages on end
"Yeah moon touched sword didn't make the list, it's useful but its not interesting enough.......so onto the number 1 slot, a healing potion! Oh, so interesting! :D
Huh, just found this channel, didnt know TheDuelLogs was this dude too xD
the Hat of Wizardry is amazing for artificers and thief rogues
Would the clockwork amulet still work if you have disadvantage?
Yes, it gives you an automatic 10 + any modifier thats positive
As written, you forgo the d20 and just use 10 instead. You'd still have disadvantage but it would only affect things like sneak attack that care if it exists, it can't change the outcome. Compared to things like a divination wizard's Portent or halfling's Lucky feature that replace or reroll a die, where disadvantage would cause you to roll two dice and then you can only reroll or replace one.
Artificers can make common magic items as a infusion, that is why I think it is simply the best utility and support class. I love taking shield and shield of faith tatoos, that with an armorer who uses heavy armour, a shield and a few other infusions that raise AC Is simply an OP tank, ur going to be very hard to hit.
So about the masquerade tattoo:
If I use it to disguise myself as a npc ( villager or guard ) then use the friends cantrip on another npc, will they be hostile to me or the person I disguised myself as?
The person you were disguised as,
As long as they don't know you have access to disguise self.

Oh what a surprise, half the items are form Xanders Guide to everything. That book is power creep incarnate
XGtE has more common magic items than any other book. TCE and EGW are far more power creep, but I agree it's getting to be an issue.
i didn't know dual logs made dnd videos
If you have awakened shrub as a pet, does it count as a light foliage to hide behind as a wood elf?
You need like 2-4 of them then, also you can level them
WIshed there was a +0 magic weapon (not counting moontouched), that only applies to blades), its power would just be having magical damage.
Homebrew: Quiver of magic arrows-includes 5 unbreakable arrows, 5 walloping, 5 poison tipped, 5 exploding, etc...
Basically make yourself Hawkeye.
Hat Of Wizardry: variant version for warlocks
Very cool.
~_~
Wait, don't you roll for each missile on Magic Missile??
Excellent video and great editing, but man there are a lot of ads. I know that's how creators make $, but...
The Orb of Shielding is even more useful than you say here, as it can be used freely by any class, which is _doubly_ useful for multiclassing casters, as this means they can use it to freely cast _all_ their spells.
To give an example, a Sorcerer/Bard/Paladin would normally be forced to use _three_ different foci (or forgo foci entirely and use a Component Pouch).
It _also_ allows half-casters that normally can't use a focus at all to use one, as it never specifies that you need to be able to use a specific focus type.
However, this _is_ a property that's shared between all magic Foci that don't specify a specific class, from what I've seen (both the Ruby Weave Gem and Dragon-Touched Focus from the recently-released Fizban's Treasury of Dragons also have this property, for example, as does the Ruby of the Warmage).
no love for the alchemy jug? you can make 2 vials of acid a day, if you sell for full price (since you DID technically make them yourself) that's 100 gp/day, even half price is 50gp/day.
sure you have to find someone to sell them to, but all the same it's free to make. plus acid is really useful, use it to dissolve bars, or hinges, or locks.
also, pending your campaign, mayonnaise might actually be a luxury item.
Using a spellcasting focus takes the place of non costly components
Your editor has an unhealthy obsession with RGB color patterns.
Don't you bad mouth the Cloak of Billowing! That plus the Helm of Awe are the most broken combo.
Cloak should give charisma bonus at day or intimidation at night like +3
Pot of awakening is even better if you make the shrub a sidekick
I don't think a single roll for the magic missile is rules as written. A dart deals 1d4 +1 force damage to its target. Where does it say that? It's worded very similarly to scorching ray. It's something weird JC said at some point but I don't see where that's written or why you would interpret it that way. Am I missing something?
The darts from _magic missile_ all deal damage simultaneously. That triggers the clause in the spellcasting rules that makes AoE spells use a single roll for multiple targets.
Sage Advice, (the pdf from WotC, not the tweets,) covers this specific spell, RAW all darts use a single roll. RAI they don't care/up to the DM.
For the hat of wizardy you still need a freehand for somatic components
You still need a free hand for the hat too. It just says you can use it as a spellcasting focus, it doesn't override the requirement to have a free hand to access material components or your focus. If that worked casters would all just strap wands to their heads like unicorn horns to keep their hands free.
Wow
I'm really surprised Dark Shard Amulet isn't on this list.
I was scrolling fast and legit thought the potion in the thumbnail was Lord Zedd from Power Rangers.
If you are a Artificer you are able to create Spellwrought Tattoos.
