  • June 2013. I took an early morning stroll around the ruins of Gwrych Castle and its woodlands, near Abergele on the North Wales coast.
    Public access is discouraged due to the dangerous condition of the structure, but I was not to be put off.

    We use to stay in my uncle's caravan as a kid 40 years ago when the castle was a tourist trap with knights jousting...happy days....

    This was an interesting piece of photography in that the castle has changed considerably since this was filmed. It was good to see what it was like at the peak of it's dereliction. One or two mistakes on the description especially the one calling it a folly, this has been lived in so therefore not a folly. The Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust in in the throes of acquiring it in order to preserve, restore and conserve. I am one of the tour guides there so why not come along and see the improvements for yourself. Thankyou for taking the trouble filming it.

      Hi. Thanks for the informative comment. Much appreciated................................. I take on board what you say about the folly. I read that description over the years in more than one source, so thanks for the correction. Please do advise me on anything else you feel needs correcting. I don't wish to be misinformative :) I visit Abergele a couple of times a year to see a friend there, but I've not been to the castle since I pottered about filming this. Now you mention improvements, I'll make the effort........................... Cheers and thank you.

      Have just watched your filming again and I have learned quite a lot from it. There are many films about the castle but yours tells exactly like it was at the peak of dereliction. Love the birds. Come and see us sometime and I'll give you a guided tour. Unfortunately you will have to pay this time. Cheers

      I will be happy to do a tour mate - and pay :) I can film it if there is no objection and perhaps plug the Trust? Cheers.

      Your filming would be appreciated. All tour money, every penny goes toward the preservation of the castle. See you soon then. I will be back in March.

      That would be great. Sadly, I can't see it happening any time soon!
      Thanks for posting Todd.

    Someone bought it to make it into a hotel,
    no more work has been done to it because of the huge costs involved
    and not sure if it
    will ever reach it's full potential again.

      I think there have been several attempts to restore it and the last I heard it was another hotel plan as you correctly say.
      Very interesting place indeed. Thanks for commenting :)

    You realise you caught something odd at 6:30 ? I've been to Gwrych about 17 years ago , beautiful majestic place but absolutely 100% Haunted

      Not sure about that mate? I assume you refer to the lens reflection? I do actually believe in ghosts, but not in the conventional & traditional way.
      Cheers for the observation and thanks for posting. Much appreciated :)

      Just looked like a misty face popped up on screen . Always hard to tell with video footage it just looked strange

      It does look like a face, I must admit. I also admit I hadn't spotted it no matter what it was, so good observation there :) I personally don't think it is anything 'odd', but who knows? You may have spotted something? :)

    3:35 the jackdaws are screaming, "private property, reeeeh, private property!" - tenants, eh?

    • @StonecatWales
      @StonecatWales  Před 10 lety +1

      Although I could have, I did not enter the actual property and stayed outside of the protective fencing. I only used the paths that everyone else used and I did that because contrary to popular belief, civil trespass is not a crime. It is a tort; a civil wrong. Private property signs carry no more legal weight than the myth of 'Trespassers will be prosecuted'.
      Civil Trespass can only be acted upon if the trespasser causes damage during that trespass. Civil Trespass is wholly different to Statutory Trespass, which is covered by criminal law ie, trespassing on Government or once government property aka military bases, railways etc.
      Entering private property with intent to cause damage or steal etc is another matter again. I'm well versed in the civil and criminal law surrounding trespassing and as I said above, the signage about private property is valueless.
      Why should the jackdaws scream 'private property' in this particular vid' clip but seemingly not in the many other vids of Gwrych Castle on CZcams which clearly do show 'trespass' beyond security fencing etc? :)

      @ArunPlaysPiano Před 10 lety +1

      Heh heh, I think they were teasing you because you know so much about trespass! :-D And yes I have watched another video where some polish people I think climb over the fence and into the castle which to my mind is a bit reckless as you could get hurt. From what you have filmed, though, it looks very nice.

    • @StonecatWales
      @StonecatWales  Před 10 lety +1

      Thanks. I agree, climbing the fence would be very reckless. The whole site looks great, especially on a sunny day and when it is quiet. :)
