Soldering technique: Clean the Tip : small container of flux, dip soldering tip in flux, and wipe on small wet sponge. This makes a shiny tip, without contamination. Melt small drop of solder on tip. This drop of melted solder transfers heat to the item you're soldering. (If possible the tip below the work.) This heat prepares the components to receive the solder. Solder carries the contaminates away from the work. You might use much more solder than you thought necessary. -But at this price, who cares! Use a magnifying glass to inspect your work. Use alcohol to clean the area around the joint. This makes faster, cleaner joints which approach commercial quality. - (We used to say: Quality, Quality, Quality, in the voice of W.C. Fields)

Thanks for this video it was very helpful but one tip for soldering
Always have your iron at the bottom of your wire and add the solder at the top of the wire so the solder melts into the wire
You never wanna touch the solder to the iron and spread or drip it on the wires the solder doesn’t penetrate and it makes for a poor connection

Not true. Just slap flux on your wire melt a little solder onto tip of soldering iron and it will "flash" right into the wire, making a perfect, clean solder joint WITHOUT melting the insulation of the wire near the joint. Try it, you will see it works great ive been doing it this way successfully for years.

    What you made isn't flux
Flux is a mildly acidic mixture that dissolves the top oxidised layer on metal, revealing the pure metal layer underneath.
Wax and cooking oil have no acidic properties
The cheapest alternatives to store bought flux is diluted HCL or even ferric chloride. But good luck cleaning that stuff off the PCB after soldering. This is why good flux solidifies after use. It prevents further oxidation.

that's what I'm worried about this video tip. I'm not an expert and doesn't know what particular component of flux is responsible for solder lead to bind faster. at 3:15, notice how clean the stick he used to dip on his home made hoax I mean flux. then when he apply the paste, it's dirtier than the one got dipped (possible a 2nd stick with genuine flux). but I do hope this actually work and not just another random hoax video that people will ask if it's real or fake.

I wonder how the ratio between candle wax and vegetable oil affects the performance of the flux, Ether way the stuff I mucked up did the job when I could not find my old flux tin. From what I have read the acid in candle wax is what is doing the work of removing oxide while the wax itself makes the oil which carries the heat a gel, Which can be applied to components easier than a straight liquid. This suggests that to improve this homemade flux, Find some kind of acid which is soluble in the oil & wax mixture.
