When you look at a pinball machine, you might think it's nothing more than a bunch of flashing lights. Many people think the game is random, but it’s actually carefully laid out in groups of targets that correlate to specific objectives, called modes.
These modes, along with the multiball, are the key to achieving higher scores in the game. Once you learn to control the ball using the flippers, start aiming for the targets that are lit - that means they are activated. Once hit, the game will light something else to tell you what to aim for next.

Lol exactly what I thought.. I was thinking who thinks pinball is random???
In the 1970s, this guy Roger Sharpe successfully proved to a New York City council that pinball ISN'T random, and the ball could actually be controlled with skill as part of an effort to remove restrictions on pinball. Before that time, Pinball machines were considered "games of chance"; i.e. gambilng, and were not allowed in certain venues. Roger proved that the ball could be controlled by playing in front of council members and calling out targets before hitting them. People credit him for "saving" pinball by successfully lifting the bans on the game. Why didn't you mention this in the video?
Very interesting. Though I don’t blame them for having that misconception because a lot of them have gambling wording in them, like jackpot and 7s.
They're making a movie about this.
You mean the guy who is literally in the video….?
@@rrwholloway yeah, but they dont mention this story. I said "this guy" as in this guy in the video.
A lot of pinball machines at the time of the NY pinball ban didn't have any flippers, and it was closer to pachinko/plinko/bagatelle, so the gambling classification wasn't far-fetched. (It really was a game of luck)
As a lover of pinball I had no idea anyone thought it was random. I thought everyone knew how to catch with your flipper and release the ball at different sections of the flipper to control the direction. It is just physics.
Game becomes much more fun with flipper skills doesn't it?
@@MarvLoco absolutely! I've also realized that prior to experiencing real pinball machines I had already had the experience of kirby pinball, sonic spinball, Pokémon pinball, and that pinball that came with windows xp. I suppose that helped me practice before I moved to the real thing.
This is how I've always seen it too. I've never really described it as "random".
I'm not a regular pinball player but I don't think I've ever, even on my first time, thought it was random. Most of the features TELL YOU WHAT THEY DO
I did think it was random but I thought that’s why it was fun.
Somebody remember the Windows Pinball 3D?
Spend to much childhood on it xD
i was gonna say the same thing. It was weird to me that people just spam the flippers instead of strategize to keep the ball in the game. But definitely one of the games i played without internet connection or when it was down. Can't forget solitaire though hah.

Who in the heck thinks Pinball is random???
idiot americans?
I was amazed by this as well but they did answer that. It's people who don't play pinball. Or at least, have played so little, so infrequently and so inattentively that they know nothing about it. You wouldn't be surprised if someone who played with a violin for a few minutes didn't figure out how to make music, and you wouldn't call them a violinist.
When I was young and stupid. Sorry!
Most people who don't play: potential customers turned off by the seeming randomness.
@@mogur00 what a funny and original joke
Pinball is my favorite arcade game, I'm surprised people think it's random. Keeping your eye on the ball is probably the quickest way to figure that out; unless you cheat the system, both physical pinball machines and video game pinball usually have several common paths that the ball prefers that will help you win. You can boost your score a lot just by shooting for those paths, let alone activating jackpot/bonus modes (which I've only done a handful of times even though I played pinball since I was 7).
Who exactly thought what these people think? Like, I completely know how to play pinball, save that multi ball bit, which I didn’t know existed. But, they really thought it was random? Have they ever actually played a game of pinball?
I thought it was random when I played the computer version, but I was like 8 and didn't know any better.
I obviously understood "don't let the ball go down the middle" I just didn't know to read the instructions on which bumpers and combos did what.
So maybe these people were 8 last time they tried a pinball machine
For a while, pinball was almost regulated _as_ gambling, because lawmakers couldn't figure out the logic of it.
I think the way people react with the flippers is very similar to people who'd never seen baseball or cricket or etc before, instead of waiting for the right moment, new kids often just swing the bat wildly and hope they hit.
The fact that some things like pachinko are random but act like you have some control probably further makes people skeptical about how much control you really have, and tables like the Addams Family which had electromagnets all under the board could have furthered that more.
People seem to think, sure I can hit it, but then it'll hit that bumper and chaos theory will come into play where the slightest difference in how they hit it leads to drastically different results. And you could probably build a pinball table like that if you really wanted to, but they're really carefully engineered to have clear "highways" of travel, places where if you don't get it up the ramp it will always drain coming back down, and so forth.
The designers really understand all the ways the balls can move. And just like the video said, things like bumpers are often in small clusters where most of the action still keeps it in a corner - there are even often walls around these clusters of bumpers so there's only one or two ways in or out of them.
But most people move from table to table, instead of taking the time to learn each table's quirks. The safe lanes don't always immediately stand out until you get used to a table.
Like many others in the comments, it wasn't until trying some free play cabinets (and also highly realistic pinball sims like Pinball Arcade) that I learned any of this. When you only get 3 tries before you run out of coins, it can be difficult to begin perceiving these patterns. But if you've got a good enough grounding in pinball understanding, suddenly within a few games on a new-to-you paid table you're often getting replays every time, and suddenly the money doesn't matter that much anyway.
Patton Gilbert I don’t think they have the time between appointments at the local tattoo / piercing parlor. Do these people seriously think those bits of metal or yards of ink will still be “”cool”” when they’re old and wrinkled?
I didn’t know it was a whole game
Never thought there was so much to Pinball, just thought you should prevent the ball from falling as long as possible
Me too. Never even knew there was a point system. Just did it as long as possible for fun. The only time I lose was when the ball came back right in the center between the flippers.
@@user-jt9fi2kl6n you can move the whole machine to nudege the ball away. but only so much or youll get a tilt
Each table has its own set of goals. Some are primary, some are secondary. In some cases, by completing modes, you might be working your way up to a bigger goal, like in Tales of the Arabian Nights. There, you complete modes to collect jewels. Get 7 jewels and you can fight the genie. Beat the genie and you beat the main goal, which is to rescue the princess.
i have a couple in my house, they are SO COMPLICATED. the rules are so deep and hard, and the engineering that has to be put into them is incredible

Tip: do not pull the plunger hard , use just enough force to get the ball on the field
i found a game once where if you pulled the plunger as hard as possible, 90% of time it would bounce off a wall and go straight into the jet bumpers
Why tho? Asking for a friend
@@lordkiza8838 the ball will move slowly and have more time to hit bumpers this is especially important on older machines
@@lordkiza8838 Some machines even add a 'skill shot' where using the right force to put it somewhere will net you a little bonus too.

I've explained this basic concept to people a few times, and they've been very surprised to learn that there are actually goals and objectives in pinball - in many cases, you can even "win" the table to a certain degree - completing all the major objectives on a table will often grant access to a final "wizard mode" with a final challenge.
For example, in 2003's Lord of the Rings table, there are goals which activate 3 separate multiball mode, one themed for each book in the trilogy. If you manage to complete all of them in a single game, you can attempt the table's final challenge to destroy the ring, which requires precise shots and quick timing. It's incredibly dramatic and exciting!
It's a game of emotional control. No quick reactions and irrational decisions to the ball, but, tactics and logic!
Hard to do when things are moving super fast! Doable though!
All this time I've playing it wrong,
I thought the main game is to keep the ball in the game, & don't let it goes in to the gate,
Helmi MuZa : no... no... you were correct. That is the main objective.
You were partially correct because if it goes in the hole you lose
Keeping a ball in play is absolutely a key component to conquering a table but knowing the best sequence of shots, how to make them and ball manipulation with nudges and flipper techniques all add up to a pretty confident play on most pins. Learn the basic rules. Aim for a few goals and build as you go. It eventually clicks.

You can find Mom-n-Pop arcades still. I recommend playing an actual pinball machine over a video game version as they do feel dramatically different.
They are challenging, but that is part of their charm. Do not get frustrated your first few plays. Study the board before you play or if possible, watch someone else play it first and you can notice how the flow and map work. Most importantly, have fun! Good luck

Been playing pinball as a self care hobby for a number of years now. Learning the techniques and rule sets have not only made the games more fun but has saved he alot of quarters.

I'm not alone!
Finally someone!!!
I think that the main reason many people don't like pinball that much, is that it is a score-based game. You're just trying to get points, which are meaningless to a lot of people. There's no objective. There isn't even a level 2. By modern standards, that is very primitive. People who love pinball likely love it because it is almost totally real. A real ball bouncing around in a real machine, actually being hit by real flippers, and bouncing around real tracks with actual light bulbs blinking behind physical elements of the game. Unless it's a board game, modern games are all digital simulations of things happening, rather than the fact of them happening.
John Smith - totally agree. I’ve been a mad keen pinball player since my dad got me into it when I was a child, and though it’s a bit disheartening these days when an arcade will have one or two machines compared to 487 digital games, I’ve often explained to friends that it’s the organic realness of the game that is of such appeal.
It’s just as you say...in pinball it’s a real ball that you’re controlling in real time & making real-life reactions occur on the playfield, rather than a largely pre-ordained set of actions & levels; of course, as with a video game, you’re trying to achieve certain goals, but it’s that realness factor that makes all the difference!
Show me a one-dimensional video game that can compare to the thrill of real-life multiball...I still remember the Judge Dredd machine that had an 8-ball multiball - the exhilaration!! 🤩
So you haven't played a machine made after 1990? Yes you can play for points but most modern pins are mode based where you play different scenarios that build up to something bigger. There's what are called mini-wizard modes when you complete a certain number of tasks, then there is the final wizard mode that you get when you complete "all" tasks.
I think it's more that it's too damn easy to lose the balls. If it was harder to lose a balls, people would play more and have a chance to learn about the little details discussed in the video and care about their score. They are engineered to make money though, not provide a good time first. The lights, graphics, and noise are all part of enticing people to play. They are more common in bars now because they know people who are intoxicated are more likely to impulsively play, while they may be more reluctant when sober knowing the odds they will lose within a few minutes of starting are high.
Alison N But that's a huge problem to pinball manufacturers, keeping a balance between the casual users and pinball pros. If a game is too easy, operators will get less games being played because of greater sessions. OTOH, if the objectives are too simple, then the pin could be boring to the hardcore audience.
@@alicen2610 As a home collector there's certainly a skill set needed to get decent game time, espescially on an unknown table but the fundamentals always apply. It's a physics machine. Nothing more. Once you have the basics of ball control and shots, you can always manage a decent game. None "cheat" though some are harder, faster and thus more appealing to better players. Too easy and it's boring but good for beginners.
You could say that we’ve *Pinned* down the strategy!

I had a pinball machine when I was growing up, a arcade tech loaned it to me, I got extremely good, there is skill to the game, knowing where the ball needs to be on the flipper helps a lot... I read the manual for the machine I had, in the manual was a chapter on leveling the machine, it said how to level the machine that will favour the house to make money on game, ways that the game would eat your ball if you level it in a way. If you level it in a way it will favour leaving the game out side the outer tracks, which is why it's good practice to lightly bump the table as it give you a tiny manipulation of the field, it's far as long as you don't get the tilt warning.
Once you get into pinball, it's easy to mock those who think it's random, but we were all there once... I know as a kid I didn't play much, because I didn't see just how controllable they were. Now I'm a collector and fanatic

You can lead your life by accident or by purpose. Pinball is an example of those two different types of thinking. People who play purposefully accumulate points, people who rely on accident find themselves out of the game very quickly. Life is a pinball game, pull the plunger and go for it or do nothing and watch the balls disappear into the holes of poverty. Education is the key to success.
Luck plays a big role too!
while true a lot of the time, I find that sometimes, stepping up to a machine with only a basic knowledge of the ruleset allows me to kind of figure the game out as I go, and I've had some of my best scores posted on first or second-time plays

@@fluke196c Well, not everywhere you end up in debt. I also wouldn't say that institutional education is complete bullshit...yeah it has it's flaws...but it's a great system for teaching the basics and later on higher the bar of the basic education lvl. in a country.
It's not the right way for everyone after the basics are learned, but with some work (talking about germany atleast) you could modernize that system just a bit and change that...e.g. If you let the students choose more of what they are intressted in and what they wanna learn, if you could make the school into a place were everyone could get to know themselfds, their intrest and abillitys, were you show those students what each field/class can teach them, let them choose were to learn deeper theories and were they just get teached the most important or a bit generialzed stuff.
My best friend taught me all of this six years ago, and it literally changed my life. I ended up not only being kind of good at pinball, but had a ton of fun while playing, took a date there (she was skeptical but I promised it would be an awesome couple of hours) and ... well we broke up a few months later, but the point is, once you learn how to "read a machine," you're about to enter a whole new world of thrills. Well that was educational. I've played pin ball a few times, but I had no idea there was an order to it and that if the feature isn't lit up then it's not worth anything. Funny that it wasn't mentioned that it's critical to know the timing at particular speeds to paddle the ball proper. Aiming is a function of waiting for the right moment to press the paddle button. Slowing the ball down definitely helps. It's not always so easy to catch it on the paddle like that though.

Does anyone know how to find the song at the end? 3 friends and are are all trying to find it, help us out?
Wow this is really interesting. It makes me want to play it. I always thought it was just random and the only objective was to hit random things and keep the ball from falling in the gap.
3:06 Cue “Stranger Things” theme song. :)
They should make a Stranger Things themed pinball machine, it would fit with the theme so well
@@prettylittleravenna A Stranger Things pinball machine got released a few months ago.
Michael Netsch WOW, cool. Thanks for letting me know, I’ll go check it out. Hopefully it’s good
I've never heard multiball described as "hectic, beautiful and terrifying", even from other pinball players, I kinda like it!
Does anyone know they music they're playing at the beginning of the video?
I still have my pokemon pinball GBA game. I never really had access to arcades as a kid, but I loved that game and all the little goodies in it.
I learned this all from Pokemon Pinball
Yes!!! 20 years later, and I'm still trying to fill up the pokedex in that game!
Evolutions are hard. Gotta open up that ditto ramp
Multiball sounds like my friday night
Pinball machines are practically non-existent in UK arcades now; I always get excited when I see one
Glad to see Vox is actually popular now. They got stuck at around 1 mil subs for a long time
The only pinball game I've played is Space Cadet 3D.
Yes man!!! Thats what got me hooked on pinball. I use to play it everyday sometimes hours! Always played it on an old 90's late 2000's windows computer
