Beginner ski lesson down a Black Diamond

  • I occasionally see skiers skiing terrain that is beyond their abilities. Some of those skiers I will see later being brought down in the Ski Patrol's sled. This day was a frozen hard pack day. Off the groomers was torture for the most experience skier. As I was heading up the chair for my first run I noticed a skier going down The Face, a Black Diamond run. I thought to myself "this should be interesting. As I got closer I could see that this skier was way out of his element. I didn't want to see someone get hurt and then see them get put on a Ski Patrol sled to be taken off the mountain when I ride up the chair again. So I had to help this person get safely down The Face.

I love helping people out like this on the slope. Most get dismissive after a while b/c they're embarrassed, but I love doing it for as long as they'll let me. I remember being that helpless and getting no support unless I crashed. It's a great feeling to help them get down safely and get thanks for helping.

The best value on a ski mountain is a beginner ski lesson. The next best value is an intermediate ski lesson. The funnest thing on a ski mountain is an advanced one-on-one ski lesson. But especially those beginner group lessons. It's fun being with other skiers, the instructors give beginners confidence and keep them out of danger and just make it fun. I still text back and forth with the instructor who taught me how to really ski moguls and still try to book an individual lesson once a season with him, mostly just to have someone to ski double black runs with who can help me build confidence.

"I have to make it as positive as possible" Perfect approach to teaching a difficult thing in an unpleasant situation. You're so right that its a really good way to learn about your edges; of course most beginner lessons should be learning this across a more pleasant traverse, and its way more important than pizza/snowplough (less likely to career into others too).
"Figuring out his inside edge" was looking good until you panned around to show what was coming; my stomach churned just sitting here in a chair.

If anything, never take off the skis and try to walk down, especially not on a black diamond. It is more dangerous than the basics Kevin was so amazingly taught by Rick here. Sliding down sideways on the steepest parts is always safer than walking in ski boots with skis in hand. I do hope you never get in such situation though! Any ski instructor will tell you these as well, so just listen to them 😊

I was an out of practice Intermediate skier when I was caught on an Orange Slope with a black beginning section of just 40m followed by very steep zig-zag icy orange to the bottom...weird ski resort in Azerbaijan. The initial path was just 6m wide with a sharp U turn, very steep. The ridge was a massive drop into exposed sharp rocks (snow had melted) and the mountain side was also missing snow. The snow was melted below the catch fence. It was my first run in 7 years. I had to learn all these tips by trial and error. I couldn't take long turns as there was exposed cliff on one side. I was out of shape so my core was burning after forcing quick turns on the ice. I had to take rest after each turn as my stomach was burning - also, on an empty stomach. It got better when I realised to put weight on outside ski instead of inside. Tookn an hour to get down. Got so hyped after reaching bottom, I went up again and did it all over again 😂 . Good to see the technical terms for what I was attempting, now I can practice these. I just wish I wasn't the only one there and people like you could stop and help

Thanks for your complement and feed back. Don't let the sunny day fool you. It was in the 20's and a groomer day only. (for everyone) It wasn't wind blown ice but it was set-up tracked out frozen snow off the groomers. It did get a little more forgiving on the lower part of the decent. Believe me I didn't want ski down this terrain. I almost convinced myself that this guy would be fine as I was riding up the chair lift and continue my groomer ski day. Maybe he would have been fine, maybe not.

When in doubt, get an instructor. Don’t go on a Black Diamond just because you think you can! Black Diamond runs are meant for advanced skiers for a reason. Before hitting black diamonds, it’s a good idea to ski hard blues with bumps and see how well you can handle that. Overshooting your ability is one of the most common reasons why ski accidents happen.

Yeah I was an instructor at Meadows after having raced there several times growing up ski racing out of Stevens Pass. This is because Meadows is one of the worst run school ski schools I've ever witnessed and based on what other people have said its been this way a LONG time. Couldn't even teach students how to properly bail out and self arrest because its all about the "experience" and trying to act like a destination resort without actually being one. Some of the friends I made with the ski school commented they are good skiers at Meadows but are pretty mediocre on other mountains. Several students hadn't gotten off the magic carpet on ballroom in 4 years! Its a darn shame. Great mountain but the way everything is run is an absolute joke. Kid fell off a chair and the director mentioned they didn't have the red plastic lines at the loading point on the chairs that every single other ski area has after I brought it up. They would always ask for suggestions but never listen or follow through on a single one lol. The face isn't that bad but considering its almost as difficult as it gets at Meadows they really need to have signage.
