If you make a lot of mortise and tenon joints, a Hollow Chisel Mortiser is a tool you should really consider. It makes quick work of the repetitive task of batching out mortises. And unlike the router, it leaves nice square ends that pair perfectly with tenons made at the tablesaw or cut by hand. This is a fairly comprehensive video and tells you pretty much everything you need to know to purchase, set up, and use a hollow chisel mortiser.

Unlike TV shows where a 30 min show is only 21 minutes long, Wood Whisperer 30 min videos are thirty minutes (well almost) of CONTENT!. Way to go Mark. Keep 'em coming! I certainly hope that you can sell the rights to the manufacturer for inclusion in their instructional material. I learned a LOT here today!
Outstanding teaching video! Every facet was not glossed over or skirted, but addressed head-on, explanations were clear and concise! Thank you!
Excellent video. Been waiting for a decent 2nd hand chisel mortiser to come my way for several years. It finally happened today, so thought I'd brush up on it's set up and use before picking it up tomorrow. Great thing is, my new (to me) unit has all of the attributes Mark highlights. Looking forward to getting into it. Thanks a bunch.
Excellent video. I bought a second hand mortise press yesterday with no instructions. It’s been about 30 years since I last used one, but this video was really helpful and pleasant to watch also. 10 out of 10.
I purchsed a drill press mortiser and have used it for some time. Wish I had found this excellent video before. Well explained, it addresses all the issues that arise. Well shot with clear instructions on use and maintenance of the machine.
Very comprehensive and informative video. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos Mark!
Great review. I’m moving to a larger shop and updating my equipment. I will be adding several powermatic tools.
Thanks for the tips! I got a drill press version of one of these 20 years ago along with a drill press and now I finally know how to use it properly 🙂
Just bought my first morticer. Great advise. Many thanks.
As usual, great presentation, explanation, and overall production. Thanks Mark.
Excellent. very informative and very well prepared and presented.
Please refresh rate how much what your company email
Great tip about using a card scraper to set the chisel / drill relationship. Thanks
Marc, thank you for showing the sharpening cones. I generally just use them 'til they're too beat up, toss them, buy a new one because I had no idea how best to handle that internal surface conditioning. Nice. Thanks!!! Can't believe I went this long without knowing that. Hah! I really only ever use 1/4 and 1/2" chisels and bits, so it hasn't been a big issue thus far.
Superbly detailed and well explained. Thanks!
Hi Mark, I have a bench top model that I bought from one of our cheap supermarkets and it was less than £50 in cost. It work well enough for what I want to do but as you will realize it hasn't any of the moving top or table. I also have the panterrounter plans from Matthias and that has a movable table using two sets of draw slides, I made one for the mortise machine but I had to double up on the draw slides so that the pressure from the chisel part did not crush the slides, it works so well that I am going to make one for my drill press as well.
To help with friction " my boss" would always have us use a bee's wax bar. Every 3rd or 4th hole you had to stop and slap a little on the chisel. it only took a few seconds and it made it much much easier to pull out and it did make the chisel last longer
Every sail boat in the 60's -70's had teak louvered doors, and we used a hollow chisel mortiser to cut 1/4" squale holes for those louvered doors. I must have punched 100,000 square holes during that time, one hole at a time. each set of stiles had to be layed out right and left sides, the holes were cut on an angle so louver blades would slightly over lap.It was a very time consuming job. I think though the glue up of the doors was the most time consuming part. Glad that part of my life is over ! we got good with the cone shaped sharpening stone too, because teak is abrasive and carries silica sand from the rivers it floats in before harvesting.Sometime youd see sparks when running it through the trable saw. I think greenlee still makes a quality drill set.
thank you mate, very informative and very helpful for my college work.
A Nice class of this technology... Thanks. Big hug from Brasil Said Choucair
This is a very helpful video on a mortise machine. I need one and my budget says it needs to be a preowned mortiser. Thanks!
You are a great teacher. If I had you in high school, I am sure I'd do way better. Thanks for the vid.
Cool video, I have a small machine but have not needed it. However I have a project coming up I will need it for. After watching this I feel I will not have any trouble. Thanks
great advice. Thanks for uploading this
oh cool! I'll have to check that out. Thanks.
With the conical sharpener, I think you could lock the cone into the quill of a drill press and spin that by hand to avoid any wobble.
So, I've been looking at the cone shaped sharpeners - they all seem to be for 1/2" and smaller chisels. Any source on tooling to sharpen hollow chisels larger than 1/2"?
@jawadsaadi The only reason I can see it being a problem is that fact that you'll need really long bits. The chuck on the mortise is up above the part that holds the chisels. So you need fairly long bits to extend far enough so that you have some room to work. And the longer the bit, the more runout.
Thanks for an excellent video.
Excellent guidance, thanks
Your videos are excellent.
Hello Marc!
If you want to clean up the bottoms of your mortice you can use a Sokosari Nomi - Japanese Bottom Cleaning Chisel They are superb!
Awesome video, always wondered how these work.
Great video, thanks for your efforts 👍
Great job on the video. Just curious... can the diamond paddles also be used to sharpen carbide tipped router bits and saw blades?
Very well prepare, Salute!
Great video as always.
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Great videos! Just wondering how the equipment stays so clean?
@afsecaira I use large flat diamond plates. DMT makes some nice ones. Just rub them together until the stone is nice and clean looking.
Excellent. Thank you.
i found the video great could you do one on therouter table because i am lossed with all the different ones out their
Wow you look so much different now! This video still helped me today though!
I like the design of this mortiser.
Excellent video!
@smfield we have a little one on the way so I think I might be in good shape for keeping him/her entertained. :)
Can you mount these sharpening cones on a drill press to keep them copletely vertical?
wonderful video - thanks so much
Could you recommend a good cabinet mount mortiser? Love your videos and expertise!
Hi, what is the brand/product information for this hollow chisel mortiser you're presenting in the video?
Can I use Square Hole Saw Auger Drill Bit Mortising Chisel Auger Drill Bit on a normal drill?
Awesome video.
Hey Marc, another great video, random question but can you please tell me if your dewalt nano drill can handle a 1" auger bit,or a video response on its limits would be great, thanks
Well done. Thank you.
@Yaakov763 a background music site. I'll have to try to remember the link for you.
Great great video, Muy bueno señor..Saludos
, 20 year imdoing this job but nothing change why
Awesome review Marc, I only want to ask about the speed of this machine, do they come in variable speed? and, do we really need that change of speed in order to customize the cuts made on variable types of wood? And also, how about a dust or debris extractor? Can it be made? Do they come with one? I was thinking at the time you explained the orientation of the debris are popping out, if only there could be an adapter for it that doesn't get in your working view or where the tool meets the material. Just an idea, but maybe the tool designers can give us that upgrade later on. Thanks for sharing!! (Y) (Y)
Can I ask where you get the sharpening device with the changeable lead pins from
Great video. I definitely need to get one of these. I am curious, though: you didn't talk about the kits that you put onto your drill press. Granted that they are less convenient than a dedicated machine, but they also take up far less of my single car garage than another floor standing item. So, I assume most of the instructions are the same, but how do you set them up? Is there any hope of quality work with them?
I think personally, the best tool I've seen for making perfect repeatable mortise AND tenons is Matthias Wandel's Pantorouter. Not to mention it works horizontally allowing you to use any size stock.
@siebert12 you can, but those kits are known for being incredibly fussy and difficult to work with.
I build a type of bed that has thirty six pickets. I went from trying dowels, to router made mortise and tenons, but I switched to a mortiser and it makes a world of difference. The big problem I have is controlling thw wood chips, there is no real easy way to vacuum them away. I actually ended up using a blower versus a vacuum to get chips away from chisel.
thanks Mark just got a hella Morrison and you gave me some great advice love your work and your videos keep up the good work and .......F.... the trolls .we need more great videos of yours
But have you now gone to the Green machine that starts with F and D and makes round edged holes. ?
Amazing
alguém saberia me dizer se da para usar esta máquina para fazer apenas furos, sem a peça para ficar quadrado? usar apenas como uma furadeira simples? obrigado
Hi I have a delta monetizing machine do you know how to get the bushing out
@kt14328 But you'll still get some side deflection that way. That's why I like to plunge where I have support on all sides. Not saying one way is more correct than another. That's just my personal preference.
Hi Marc. A good video. Do you still use your mortiser since you have a Festool Domino?
Mark,
If you make your two end cuts first the end will be square. Then you can make cuts one chisel width for easier chip removal.
Great as Always! Any reason why the Hollow Chisel Mortiser can't be the fully fledged drill press as well?
Great video Mark... you can easily see the effort you had to put into it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I just don't get why there is always a small percentage of people that can give a video like this a downvote? Abstain sure, but downvote?
Just trolls with nothing better to do.
How to replace 03 Honda Odyssey ignition relay and ignition switch
Some people might be downvoting because the video is sponsored. Some might disagree with the basic premise of the hollow chisel mortiser. They might find that routers make a much cleaner mortise and with a decent jig are pretty easy to use. Or maybe they are handtool zealots. Personally, I think it was a great video about the hollow chisel mortiser, and on that basis I would upvote. However, from my experience with my benchtop HCM, I'm not that impressed. I find it to be kind of slow and the mortise quality isn't that good. Just my experience with a little one. Oh, and some people just downvote everything, I think. Look at the ratio of up to down. That's more useful as a metric.
So damn good, thanks mate
Do you still use your powermatic floor model mortiser?
Fantastico !!!!!!
so nice
Do you still have the powermatic 720hd chisel mortiser? I'm looking at buying one second hand. What is the advantage of a moving head over a moving table?
@TheWoodWhisperer Congrats!!! A little shop sweeper, or at least that is what my kids do for me! Who needs dust collection, just have another kid.
How I can get it
Everything I wanted to know about hollow chisel mortisers but were too afraid to ask, many thanks, awesome video.
I share the same comments with Mr. Robert Sullivan. Do you also go through other wood working machines the same way? I'm interested in buying some of the machines. Rana
Hebat canggih
@ibdavidc to be honest, I have never used one before. But from what I have heard from many folks who own them, they can be quite finicky. That's not to say you can get good results. You'll just have to work harder to make sure the fence is set up properly and in perfect alignment with the chisel. The fences and handles on drill presses were not designed for this type of work, so everything is going to be a bit of a compromise.

From where I should buy this
@smokes00 Im sorry but I don't completely understand the question Smokes.

any chance you can do the same type of video with a bench top model?
Why though? The whole process is exactly the same.
Muy bueno
What happened to the old chisel set
Скажите, как эта машина в работе?
thanks woody
Is this mechine available in india??
how can i buy this from india please let me know ? ,
Mark I have recently purchased a power matic, table top mortise machine.i can't seem to get the chisel to auger, right where it's not so hard to drill the work piece. Cedar, or pine struggle a little but the maple or cherry is almost impossible to do .it feels like I'm going to break the down lever.its so hard .can you help with some advice ..
I bought the identical machine new several years ago and experienced the same problem as you describe. Upon close inspection of the auger bits, I found them to have been very poorly ground, with dull cutting edges. Using a Dremel grinder and small diameter rotary abrasive tools, I carefully re ground all of the cutting edges making sure to maintain the original clearance angles. I also polished the internal cutting edges of the hollow chisel using the included cone shaped sharpening tool. Finally, I polished the external square surfaces using very fine grit (6-800) sandpaper (lubricated with 3 in 1 oil) on a hard flat surface. Problem solved. Final note; make sure you allow 2+mm vertical clearance between the head of the bit and chisel cone and spray the bore of the chisel with a lubricant that dries on contact.
Mark could you tell me, this chisel mortiser can be used as a drill press? By norma drill press bits?
I guess theoretically it could. It should accept regular drill bits. But the bits have to be extra long because of the design of most of these things.
Kaha ke ho bhaiya aap
I like to buy this machine. Where can I buy it?
Hey Mark, now I can never be happy with my bench top Jet... agghhhh
