- If their first US Open final came off as somewhat of a dud, this one saw a dazzling display of tennis between the Puma catsuit-sporting Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams. Serena was bidding for her third Grand Slam title of the year, while Venus was the two-time defending US Open champion.

We talk about Serena's amazing accomplishments but Venus is clearly no slouch. Three STRAIGHT US Open finals and four STRAIGHT slam finals she would have most likely won had she played anyone other than Serena. Definitely worth at least a mention.
Venus never lost before the SF of the USO from her debut in 1997 to 2004. She deserved so much more.
@Spiritualistic I'd say that energy draining disease may have something to do with that, but let's not forget how great 2017 was for her. Two slam finals, USO semis...

A lot of players should be thankful that venus got sick back then, because she never recovered. Had she been healthy like Serena, no other players would have won any of the GS that Serena didn't win. A matter of fact, all the GS's that Serena won, would have been split between them, because if you notice, they kept meeting up at the finals back then. That's my view on them.

Hmm, I would say 2013 serena would win majority of their matches if they played 10, she was just so consistent particularly with her forehand with the extra spin she had developed, and especially on clay 2013 serena would win, she went undefeated on the surface that year, angles and touch were on point

I was at this match and the Women's semifinals. My birthday is August 27th, so my friends and family always gifted me tickets to this wonderful event in my younger years. Watching Venus and Serena play against each other and the power and quickness is unmatched. Watching on tv or a video doesn't do any justice. I was in awe. These 2 ladies changed the game of women's tennis. The other tennis players had to take it up a notch in order to consistently compete with them. The winner not only had to overcome their opponent...they had to overcome the adversity of the loud NY crowd...the #7 subway train running in the background, the planes flying overhead, noise filtering in from Shea Stadium & the NY Mets next door. The US Open is a tennis event like no other. Hands down my favorite sporting event. The atmosphere is purely electric~!! Celebrities in the mix with fans. Totally just FIERCE~!!

Some crazy hitting by both players but especially Venus. The forehand at 1:56 and 3:44. That backhand at 15:14 is really incredible. The forehand at 17:18. Again an unbelievable backhand at 17:48.

I don't think she was nervous at all, she was happy that Serena finally arrived to meet her at the top and became big sis again giving everything to her until Serena actually took Wimbledon from her
OMG the level of this match is insane. I remenber watched the Roland garos final the same year, i Was hypnotised by them. And thats really why i started tennis by watching them play.

Mónica Seles turned professional in 1989 as a 16 year old child and in that year she lost her three matches against a 20 years old Steffi Graf. From that moment until her stabbing in 1993 their h2h was 4-3 in favor of Mónica so it was 6-4 in favor of Steffi before de stabbing of Mónica.
Now a proper use of that term would be: Serena dominated the meldonium queen Screamapova Dopapova 20-2 in their career h2h.
This one of my favourite to watch sisters 1 and 2 in world just classic moments and the rest is history

Good choice, thanks! That was step three of the Serena slam. Venus also played a great season in 2002, but Serena was just a bit better. Serena was clearly the best player of the tournament, she won all her matches clearly, while Venus had big problems against Rubin in R4 and Mauresmo in SF.

Best of their 2002 matches but they had many other amazing matches after this. You could tell in 2002 they struggled playing against each other

The William sisters revived woman's tennis. Definitely the reason why I started watching tennis. I only watch when they play. A fan since the early days.
We all have watched greatness from both Venus and Serena. I think Venus was the one who pushed Serena to the highest heights of her Vareer as she had to play her in so many semi finals and finals. Dad developed them both, but Venus helped shape Serena to where she is today. Now don't get it wrong, Serena always had a much stronger hunger and drive to win given she was the baby sister who looked up th big Sis. Venus and V being her protector. Love them both...They are a Class Act. Much Love fro. Bermuda 🇧🇲
It's furstrating to hear these commentators say the word power over and over...at 17:50 the point was so perfect, and of course the lazy response is power. The precision, accuracy, and shot-making...the discipline, and hard work to reach such greatness on both of these champions is just so breathtaking, I almost want to turn off the play-by-play. They are so reluctant to give credit where credit is due, and the bias is so strong that it contaminates, and dominates their own description and understanding of the game. Ugh!
Serena had the advantage in this match . Venus burst a blister in the middle of her hand in the semifinal match and it affected her serve and forehand. that's why her right hand it taped/bandaged.

During those 20ish years, Venus was the 2nd best player, behind Serena. No other player made 16 GS finals with 7 wins during that period… Justine Henin could have been up there but she was plagued by an injury and the grueling nature of the tour…
Yep 2023 and those three players are a country mile above anyone else since Graf retired in terms of accomplishments, though credit to Maria for the career slam
