  • Join me as I travel The Devil's Highway in the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge and the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range along the southern border of Arizona and Mexico. This will be a 4 or 5 video series. The dirt road is 250 miles long and traverses some of the most inhospitable desert on the the continent. Plus, it's full of history and has been in use for a 1,000 years and was a major path for the Spanish to travel from Mexico to the California coast since the mid-1500's. Video 6

Man.... the stories I could tell ya. I was stationed in Yuma in the late 60's at Marine Corps Air Station. I was in 5th Light Anti-Aircraft Missile Battalion and we would spend months in the desert. All off time was spent in my pickup driving the desert. We explored a fantastic mine you would be interested in .....Gold Rock Ranch ...just across the Ca. border. Old mining cars still down in the mine. Beautiful chambers, turquoise with copper. Several Marines were killed in that very same mine several years later. They were partying in the mine and decided to start a fire. Bad decision. They all suffocated. Saw mountain lions, badgers, ringtail cats, deer, sheep and of course...sidewinders. Enjoyed the visit.

Notice that patch of cholla is turning black? There are areas close to the point you are at where the plant life is all dead. Farther North, outside Yuma, the Welton Irrigation District is pumping so much water out of the ground that the water table has dropped significantly for many miles in all directions.

Another great adventure, but worried for the sake of your brother. It's amazing how easy it is to get separated out there. All that dry country makes me thirsty. I can't get over the fact people actually try to cross that desert. How desperate must be their lives to make them think going across that is a better option. Be safe and may you find your brother soon. I hope yuo both find the nugget mother load, tho it might start another gold rush.

do you guys use radio to keep in touch? Cheap handheld UHF "FRS" radios or similar are reasonably good in open level terrain with few trees - perfect for the desert. Climb a rock or stand up on your truck door step/sill and they are even better.
I was thinking that the other day when you were climbing and sliding around those tank chutes a simple twisted ankle and you could be a goner in a place like that. Then today, it would have helped coordinate you two guys, saving time and worry.
