    The diesel Power is addictive, once you drive this diesel, it is almost impossible to go back to a gas engine. Especially when you throw a 3 1/3 inch lift with 37 inch tires, and some weight with gear to her. Perfect tow machine when you add Air Bags as well. I can attest this machine tows more weight confidently, without issues and thru the Appalachian Mountains than a Gas engine. I am also getting 31 MPG at sea level In Virginia Beach, VA.

    I think for me it all would depend on what I plan to do to it. If I were to keep it stock the diesel may not be worth it. However if I were planing a lift and 37’, the cost of the diesel would be mitigated by not having to change gears or do any other power mods. Plus a bit of savings in fuel would make it worth it to me.
    The cost of gearing and power upgrades would be $2000+ and fuel savings of approximately a third of your fuel. I feel that whittles away at that $4000, enough to make it a good upgrade.

    Business users in the USA, opt for the diesel, as it just tips the jeep into the higher weight category for commercial vehicles. I believe it's 6000lbs + whereas the Gas is 5800lbs. I could be mistaken in those exact figures, although the principle stands.

    In reality it's mostly a $4K option in the US when not counting the transmission. Still a big chunk for dealing with DEF and what sounds like faulty DEF pumps in the cold. That MPG and torque makes it tempting, people are still getting over 20mpg with 37s, loaded and no regear. Also kind of wonder how that extra weight (+400lbs?) in the nose and lots of torque does on icy roads.

    • @snowlothar45
      @snowlothar45 Před 2 lety +3

      DEF goes forever on a tank. Not a big deal. The extra weight makes for a better ride and plants it much better. 50-50 weight distribution. That torque is worth the extra cost to me. I drove both - the diesel came home with me - easy decision.

    I'd get the diesel if you could also get the select trac transfer case... it just seems to make sense to have awd capability when needed for a typically on-road vehicle... if they can have that capability in the RAM, they too should have it in the Jeep in my opinion

  • @ericshere03
    @ericshere03 Před 3 lety +3

    HECK YEA! There are other factors to consider. A relaxed engine making almost full torque of idle. Completely changes the driving experience. Imagine how happy this engine is in a gladiator when the ram pushed this motor to tow 12000+ lbs.
    Go back a few years and people were paying 20-30 grand for a hemi conversion, at that time the hemi was 345hp and 375ftlbs, and prolly got 12mpg.
    So how much of a value is a 260hp 440ftlb tw diesel that gets double those old hemi swaps? Plus a factory warranty ?
    I’ve been driving Jeep’s since I had a license and I can tell you that I am sick and tired of underpowered engines in the Jeep’s... ALL OF EM!!!
    You can count me in the diesel group, and as cool as a hemi is, the way Jeep positioned the hemi wrangler at 70-80 grand is insane, but they’ll sell like hot cakes I’m sure...

  • @trailrunnah8886
    @trailrunnah8886 Před 3 lety +6

    I think you hit on something when you described how with the 3.6, you really have to get into the throttle to access that high RPM power, while with the diesel you barely have to touch the pedal. A lot of people like that feel. I think that alone would be enough to push me to get the diesel, I hate having to flog an engine to access its power. That's the one major complaint I have about my 4Runner, that 4.0 V6 is very peaky and takes a heavy foot, making for what I feel is a rather unpleasant driving experience.
    Brad from Trailrecon did a review of his ecodiesel, and he mentioned the advantage is not so much the fuel cost savings, but that the better mileage allows for a longer range. He also noted that the increased torque from the diesel makes for good driving experience, that even loaded down and running 37's on stock gearing, it pulls grades with no problem at all.

    • @evanlamascus1868
      @evanlamascus1868 Před 3 lety +1

    Perfect way to
    put it. Dad was so right. "The market will decide"
    Also with the diesel you have a smaller fuel tank. So 5 mpg is great, but you hold less fuel. What is the range compared to the gas? Less towing and $6,000.00 more. Plus all the additional maintenance for the diesel engine. Also the needed DEF fluid? For me, it's not a game change.

    Also worth mentioning, the diesel weighs around 500 lbs more than the gas set up. Thats a huge pile of weight on the front axle, then add a winch and beefy bumper. For a work truck with 4 wheel drive it'll be good, for an off roader it would be questionable.

    Drivability day to day says a lot and smiles per mile is often overlooked. If you are planning on an automatic transmission anyway, that cost is moot. I’ve heard around the internet there are lots of factors that affect towing; gross vehicle weight, frame, and suspension. One I hadn’t heard was engine cooling and it’s possible that under heavier loads maybe they had cooling issues? 🤔 TBD as to why I’m not any early adopter but prefer to wait and see approach. The diesel will easily out tow the Pentastar. Right up until the compromised by radiator, engine bay, and turbo heat computer controlled cooling system pulls the woe nellie. Towing numbers set in accordance with SAE J2807 towing standards.
    Solution add small electric puller fans to the back of the radiator. Add aluminum dryer vent tubes with a rear hood vent or vent ports as close to the top of the doors as possible. Not without caveats but it would work to extract heat to allow contending with towing heavy or turning up the boost (by ecm) for mo power to turn those 42s! 😄😎

So let's see that was 25 years ago so 7 grand for the better mpg and torque may not be that much after all. As a GL owner I will make a few points after several months of ownership and my third jeep in a decade. 1. This ISNT for everyone. If your looking fir a mid sized truck, drive them all. These drive differently. Solid axle up front needs a little more attention. 2. Its shaped like a box and it lets you know. Windy days can be a handful, but I would say wind noise isnt actually all that bad. Thats me coming directly from a 2019 tacoma trd pro. 3. These arent huge trucks and your limited to a 5’ box thats a little on the shallow side too. Dont expect miracles when it comes to passenger room but it does well for its class.
    Upsides: 1. well this truck is solid axle lol, easy to lift and somewhat easy to maintain. Oil change took me 15 mins in my driveway. 2. HUGE aftermarket support with the ability to really make it your own. A clean build turns heads. 3. The 3.6 and the 8 speed auto are matched well and even with my small lift and 33” tires, im getting 19-21mpg. Nit bad. My TRD Pro was 17-18mpg. 4. It tows my 3500lb trailer surprisingly well, yes it likes to rev put you can argue my Trd pro 3.5 was more rev happy. Overall its not fir everyone. Watch reviews like TK and others with good feedback. Narrow down your 2-3 picks and go from there. I know I love mine!

    Bottom line it is not the market that decides if they want a diesel or not a diesel. European manufacturers sell diesels about $3000-$4000 above a comparable gas engine. The fact is that US manufacturers do not want to sell diesel in the US. And Canadians are just along for the ride till our population gets big enough to make our own decisions through distributors. Canadians used to buy way more diesels per capita than in the US especially when a European manufacturer offers the option.

    I think it's relatively safe to say 99% of Gladiator buyers are going to want the automatic trans, so the $2000 charge for that shouldn't be held against the EcoDiesel. As such, that makes it a $4,000 US option. Still not pennies, but not the $6,000+ mentioned. The larger problem I have overall with the Gladiator is how you get nickeled and dimed for everything. Even the "top" trims lack a lot of available options, which means it's very easy to get up with a sticker close to or over $60k US by the time you add all the things you want and that other trucks include as standard in their upper-level trims for less money. When I look at my Canyon Denali and an optioned-out Gladiator I don't see an extra $10k-15k of value in the Gladiator. What you're paying for that that point is for status.
