  • Review of the Sabre Brand Japan Barlow Pocket Knives No.1 and No. 3. These were made sometime in the 1960's and feature sawcut bone handles, brass pins, and carbon steel blades. The Sabre brand was a budget brand in its day, though made some nice looking pieces. These Barlows are 3-1/4" closed and UK Friendly.

I have a Sabre Japanese made 614. It was my father's and he used it heavily and now I have carried it everyday for about 5 years. Very good knife that is easy to sharpen and it is still very tight for the heavy use it has had over the last 50 yrs.

My first pocket knife was a Sabre brand knife that my dad bought for me when I was about 8 or 9 years old. We were at Heck's, a midwestern discount store chain back in the 80s. They had these knives on sale cheap, like $5 and he bought one for me. I still have it. Made in Hong Kong. A lockback knife similar in appearance to a Buck 110. I found it recently in a box of old stuff (I'm 47 years old now) and it was dull. I sharpened it up and it shaves now!

I’ve got a pretty nice 629, bought one recently to gift to a friend as well. It had the delrin handles, but what a great big clip blade. And the half stop is really great too. I’ve bought a few Sabre, and the Japanese ones were the best of the ones I bought (hong Kong, china, Ireland we’re the others). Great video love when you bust out the vintage blades. Between you and Tobias, you guys got me hooked on Rough Ryders too, so I thank you for that.

Thanks for the kind words Joel. Sabres are great value vintage knives. They were always meant to budget, but they were made well even by those standards.

Because of your mentioning these, I found a great deal on ebay for a Sabre made in Japan hawkbill 645. Some had no model number. My very first knife purchased in my life was a 5 dollar Sabre made in Japan, so they have special appeal to me. I like the bone handle ones the best too. You have some great one's.

I recently acquired a Japan No 3 pretty much like yours. I found it in a pawn shop for $5, with a fair amount of corrosion on the blades - some sanding, polishing and cleaning has brought it back to life, with a small amount of pitting. It opens and closes with a good snap now. The small blade is slightly different than yours - more of a sheepsfoot than a pen blade. Overall, I think it is a decent little knife.

I have to agree with you. Sabre Japan might be the best of the lot. I definitely like that #3 the best. Not that anything is wrong with the #1. Both have some beautiful sawcut bone!
BTW, I always felt the USA made one were subcontracted through Providence Cutlery. These are definitely a step up!
