  • Welcome to the Thrifty Thursday LIVE review. Today I take a look at the Rough Ryder Amber Jigged Bone Barlow RR201. These two versions of the Rough Ryder RR201 have clip point and pen blades made from 440A stainless steel. Each blade is mirror-finished with a match strike pull. The bolsters and pins are made from nicle-silver, the liners are brass, and springs are stainless. The older version RR201 has a round horseshoe style shield and the newer a "Chevy" bowtie style shield. Closed length is 3-1/4". UK Friendly.

Thank you, a great video, a good comprehensive comparison review.
Thank you for the recommendation as I just got this Barlow (new version) at the start of the month, very pleased, another one for the Barlow collection.
    Take care
    Sam

Glad it was helpful, Sam. Hard to go wrong with amber jig bone. Have a good weekend.

Fine pieces, I think I prefer the older version. The darker bone feels more nostalgic, suits the knife very well.

The coloring is a richer dark red on the older piece, and probably more accurately amber on the newer. Thanks ihopetowin.

It is nice seeing older Rough Rider knives collected. You don’t have to spend as much as others older knives and they seem a little better made for some reason to me. Figuring out how old they are is hard. Rough Rider made so many models and types of knives some are pretty interesting to see. Thank you for showing these two off.

There's a spreadsheet floating around the AAPK forums that dates the knives, but honestly I'm not sure how accurate it is nor does it account for variations. Thanks Gizmo. www.allaboutpocketknives.com/page/jerry-brockman-rough-rider-spreadsheet.htm

Nice Barlows. The jigging on the bone looks really good. The horse shoe looks a lot better than the big ol you know what.

That new one looks very familiar (Thanks TK!).
Am looking to get one of these traditional Barlows to pair with the RRR.
You had to sneak the R(ectal) T(hermometer) in there , haha!

Just a brief mention 😁. The RR and RRR would make for a nice pairing. Thanks for watching DD, I know you can't be there live.

Beautiful amber jig bone really makes the simple Barlow design stand out. Too bad camera has focus problems, but it shows color and detail really well.

Sorry I missed the live. Now I need to look more closely at some of my older Barlows to see which pen blade I have. Older one my have a denser bone or possibly thicker bone. You might want to check blade thickness.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  Před 2 lety +1

Eyeballing the two, there's no discernible difference in the thickness of the blades. Handles are ever so slightly different in thickness. Older (round shield version) being thicker. Thanks Tobias.

Very nice knives , traditional patterns are all I carry anymore . Here in N.Y.C.
anything "Tactical" screams weapon to the local P.D.(even a visible pocket clip
is a problem , considered displaying the knife) Traditionals (a.k.a. Grandpa knives ) are much more accepted as work knives or tools. Pull out a "Tactical" and unfortunately you are going to attract some unwanted attention .Pull out a Traditional and you're very likely to have someone say " Hey , my dad / granddad
carried a knife just like that " and you can begin a conversation about the value of carrying a pocket knife .
Great Video. Peace , Be Free.

If that badboy was a single blade Barlow would be perfect - got a yellow handle 1 - their a beast of a work horse

I'm betting in time RR make more of the single blade Barlows like they did the Classic Cinnamon.
