Great Review man! I feel like you did a great job explaining this for player unfamiliar with ck2
How would you compare this game to how something like Imperator: Rome plays? A lot of elements sound similar, but hopefully a lot less obtuse. Tried Imperator and sank several hours into it, after which I still had no idea what was going on, what I was supposed to be doing or even if I was doing anything at all.
You've put playing these games into words.
This is a way deeper praise than it initially seems.
Your description doesn't really irritate me at all, and I've been playing CK since the beginning.
It really is just feudal sims, with incest, murder and the odd war (crime).
Ck2 was only like sims in the sense that you had to take care of your character's needs and a family... that's literally it. You sure you played it?

This is really a good way to explain this game to people like me who find this game intimidating and confusing. I'm gonna try it.
You should! It takes some getting used to but if youre a fan of history it is ridiculously fun and addicting
CK2 isn't intimidating once you've played the tutorial and a save or 2. Like most Grand Strategy games it just looks intimidating.
Europa universalis 4 is also great fun! It's one of the best Grand Strategy games of all time. It may not have 3-D avatars, but it's system are some of the bests. You can buy it off Kinguin or similar for real cheap.

@@JakeLovesCoffee I'm playing the tutorial right now. I really like some of the additions they have made. I haven't played CK2 in awhile (mainly play Eu4), so I don't know if some of the new feature were added to CK2 via dlc I haven't played.
It's on game pass which I got for $1 when MS FS2020 came out. So if it's still available for $1 try CK3 out for a month.
This game looks really fun and seems to have a way better UI than CKII.
It took me like 100 hours to even figure out what I was doing in CK2 😂
@@plus12gaming In my last playthrough at CKII I spent 80 hours to create the Empire of Scandinavia and 20 to defend it from "righteous crusade" after "righteous crusade" (thanks, Islam, for totally losing the religious wars this round, leaving me as the sole target for the fury of the Pope...)
The funny thing is that I was the bastion of the Reformed Germanic Faith, but Germany itself was Catholic - the heathens!

Interesting to see a review from someone who isn't super familiar with the game. After 2k hours in CK2, it is easy to forget that not everyone just "gets it" when it comes to how the game works. But I remember feeling exactly like you for my first game in Denmark in CK2.
Seems like they've taken the role playing to a whole new level compared to CK2, I already have game pass, I will definitely be playing it.
Definitely give it a chance. It's so good once you start understanding how it works.

As a ck veteran, you nailed the appeal better than I could.
To all the people new to CK, I'd recommend getting this on game pass and trying it out for a month. Idk about this game but ck2 had a huge learning curve. Behind that was an absolutely brilliant game with infinite repayability. Go into it with a little patience and you'll have the best experience.

Lolisama Overlord yep, they continuously released DLC several years after the game released. An alternative would be to stop supporting the game shortly after launch, which is the industry standard. But I get it, it’s fun to bring this up because it’s an easy way to get internet points.

I played CK2 and CK3 looks nice, hope they integrate the dlc/mechanics well into CK3, the only thing im worried is their dlc policy, how they are going to manage future additions to the game.

Everyone new to the CK franchise, worry not. I am completely new to Ck entirely and through the tutorial within about 40 minutes I was easily able to play the game. The UI was simple and great to use unlike the second game (Which I couldn't get into or understand personally). It was definitely worth a buy for me, got it today and already sunk over 6 hours into it. I bought it worrying that I wouldn't understand it like the complex and intimidating looking UI in CK2. CK3 has an extremely in depth tutorial and if you follow it well there's no reason you still shouldn't understand it. I had more trouble in hearts of iron 4 even.
Honestly I'd love to see one day in the future like ck5 where you zoom in even more and see what your king is doing Sims style

Yo, thanks for letting me know this game exists, would have completely missed it. Checked it out on Game Pass and have not put it down since. The amount of jaw dropping moments I already had is crazy. I love games where you can get a story to tell your friends that is completely bonkers.
My experience with CK2 was just playing a bunch of full conversation mods (game of thrones, elder scrolls, etc). I am interested in trying this and I can't wait to see the mods

It's great. I went to war with someone in the Middle East, stole their wife and married her, fell in love, then someone from France waged war on me and stole my wife. She now lives in their court. I check on her from time to time. I miss my Middle Eastern wife, but my army isn't big or strong enough to get her back from the French:'(

Compared to CK2, this seems soooo much more accessible to newcomers to the series. I'm looking forward to playing it tonight, as it seems for once to be a PDX title that isn't shite at launch.
I thought you led me astray with this review as i couldnt get into it, 5 hours gameplay in 2 years but i thought id give it another go with the new dlc and man was i wrong. Ive never played a game where minute choices have massive consequences and every leader plays so differently its almost like a new game. Thanks again for your great work.

After seeing the incredibly stupid situations people playing this were getting into I got really interested in this game.
I played crusader kings, because of this video and I love it. Basically fell down a rabbit hole, where it ended by luring the pope into an ambush, because he was against me, I got him btw
And IGN gave it the elusive masterpiece of a 10.
Which is weird because I see an awful lot of water on the overworld map.
I would rate CK3 a 3 that needs alot more work. To much information that never tells you actually what to do...just info with no viable choices to look at??. The war mode sucks as placement is terrible. I will stop playing this soon as it is like listening to D. Trump who every time I see his face I turn off the news he is on. FIX this GAME?
I get that the boats were a bit cumbersome in CK2, but at the same time I wish that instead of simplifying it they would have added more. Naval combat would make sense, especially when you get toward 1300. Maybe be able to upgrade estuaries to have "a fleet" (which can't be moved) which would protect against incoming attacks. If the boat system was going to remain solely transports, it makes sense to cut it, but I still would have rather had some way to protect my lands from the sea.
Who knows, maybe eventually they'll add in republics again and will implement naval combat to support embargoes. Can only hope.
I've been playing for a couple weeks on Xbox and considering paying for the game and all DLC's on steam. After this review I did exactly that. Still trying to figure out the immortal mod and other variables that make an already interesting game even more interesting. Thanks for your reviews, man!

Playing it and liking it. I liked CK2 alot so that plays into how I feel.
As someone who owns crusader kings 2 and every single piece of dlc. My question would be, what content if any does it provide beyond what I already have, and does it lack anything that i already have? Is it just a refreshed user interface or something more?
You may want to watch the IGN video as well. (They rated it a 10/10 masterpiece) I think the expectation is, from what I read somewhere in the comments there, that most/all content/dlc from CKII will eventually make it to the third installment but as of now it's not as rich? Take all that hearsay with a chunky grain of salt.

It lacks Nomad and Imperial government types, and republics arent playable yet, though tbf they were really poorly implemented in CK2
IIRC they have said they're going to add them later on
Most of the CK2 DLC content are in the game in some form or another. Many things are expanded for the better aswell. Some things are cut though but it's mostly things that won't be missed.
Seems like the biggest new features are stress, hooks, skill trees, dynasty legacies and house heads

Karak you just made this game sound so fun and interesting to someone who, as far as this genre goes, has only played a little bit of Imperator Rome and didn't like it.

The first time I played CK2 I remember hating it. It took me 4 attempts through the tutorial for it to finally click with me, I have been playing ever since.
Most gamers (as evidenced by some of the comments) don't have the patience. I was the same as you, had a few awful games of CKII before it clicked. Gotta admit, I gave up on Dominions 5, there is a roof to my patience.
CK2 was probably the best unknown RPG of the last decade and now PDX really upping their game with implementing deepr RPG mechanics within the sequel.
Considering all that, its ironic that the CK games have become better RPGs compared to the mainstream RPGs like the Witcher 3 or Chrono Trigger lmao

I just spent three days completing monarchs journeys, as many achievements as I could, etc. I'm now looking forward to trying CK3 because in the last days before release I've burned myself out on CK2.
My final CK2 game; as mongols, doing the holy sites achievements (hold medina mecca Rome Jerusalem, then in another hold some of those plus constantinople and Antioch as an orthodox). I've done so many achievements the last few days.
i got excommunicated after the pope called on me for money or soldiers for a crusade twice in 5 minutes for the same crusade, but i couldn't give them anything because i was in a large personal war, and another time i was called by the pope for a crusade, i donated money to the war chest, but it claimed i didn't contribute anything to the cause, so i lost a level of devotion because it took my money and left me poor

I've never played one of these, played some Civ here and there over the years - but thats about the depth of my experience. I can't justify buying this anytime soon, but when its on sale a little down the line - i'm definitely curious to try this out.
If your curious to try it out just go play crusader kings 2. The base games now available free, consider it a demo. Even though the base game is lean as far as the complete experience goes... it would still be more indepth than the vast majority of games in their entirety... which should tell you something about the games complexity. I own all the dlc and im bewildered myself 90% of the time with regards whats happening lol
You can get it on xbox game pass for pc for £1, just buy it, then cancel the recurring subscription and after a month you get the deal for £1 for a month again.
You could "test" CK2 first, if you know what I mean.
My question remains if it is better than CK2 with all DLC's (except Sunset Invasion)?

I like how people in steam discussions are like "I worry that CK3 is dumbed down CK2". While i only have 3 hours so far in CK3 id say its much deeper and actually encourages roleplay.
I'm new to ck and I can't wrap my head around the characters systems and Rpg elements, I'm always distracted with managing wars and stuff lol

Gamepass is a life saver to play this game on release. I wouldn't have bought it now at full price, knowing how Paradox will later flood it with DLC content and expansions.

Is it very hard to get a handle on how to play? like is there a HUGE learning curve like galactic civ 3?
Basically, imagine yourself thrown out of the blue in the shoes of a medieval ruler. Being clueless at the beginning is part of the fun.
In CKII there are people playing to conquer the World and people who start to secretly worship Satan and derail a dynasty just for the fun. It is up to you.
It’s intimidating to start yes, but once you have a few games under your belt you start to understand how the basics work. I learned ck2 by playing my first few games on newb island (aka Ireland, your pretty safe from outside threats there). My advice is to just enjoy the stories you create with your characters, learn to enjoy your failures and don’t focus on “winning”. Honestly, my best memories from ck2 are when everything goes crazy and all my plans blow up in my face!
@@bowenc24 Exactly. In one of my first games I was killed by my son. It turned out that he had a homosexual relationship with my spymaster. The main character switched to him, life become hard (everyone hated me, then I was excommunicated...) and I fell in love with CKII. I hope that this level of depth (depth of life-stories) is not lost in this new iteration.
Vincenzo Beretta I love hearing other player’s stories, they’re always great lol! I don’t think this one lost the depth, from the let’s plays I’ve watched seems like they managed to keep the depth and even improve on it with the stress system, allowing for improved role playing. Can’t wait to start scheming tomorrow!
It's not hard to learn, but it's hard to master.
Think I'll just stick with bannerlord I wanna have battles and stuff too. It changes up the momentum so it doesn't bite me to death with the same stuff all the time.

Personally I'll be waiting for a sale, we already know there will be a ton of DLC coming out for it so I'll let some of those come out and for a time when most of them are discounted. Still working my way through a backlog of games and Wasteland 3 just came out.

I'm always surprised when people say about brainy strategy games "not for everyone" but have no qualms recommending Doom or racing games, as if those were for everyone. 😉 Every game is only for people who like that kind of stuff! There is no universally appealing game anywhere. It's enough to just say 'this will really appeal to fans of The Sims, complex RPGs and strategy games who are okay with humorous shenanigans', just like a good shooter will appeal to fans of shooters.
@Amelia Cho Currently, this is no. 2 on the bestseller lists. And how many women do you know you play car racing games, which are never described as not for everyone even though they're much more niche than this? I still think that this is due to considering a slightly dumb male sports fan as somehow the default of humanity, and anything that wouldn't appeal to that hypothetical default gets a qualifier.
@Amelia Cho I was only taking about this particular reviewer, who reviews all kinds of genres and yet never uses the "niche" or "not for everybody" expressions. And such a bestseller can hardly be called niche. It's just not consistent.
Anybody can pick up Doom or racing games and immediately get into it. The same cannot be said about grand strategy games like CK2 and 3. You have menus in menus in menus and modifiers in modifiers in modifiers. The joke about beating EU4's tutorial by logging 1444 hours exists for a reason. Even though CK3 is probably the most newbie friendly game from Paradox, the learning curve is still gigantic, and the skill ceiling is still astronomical.
@@Jarekx2007 I was especially thinking of e.g. Dirt Rally which is super complex and very hard. Everyone can pick this up and start the tutorial, it's not like EU4 at all.

I started CK 2 last week and I had to look up CZcams video and wiki just to get a slight understanding and I still can't play it well. You have to study this thing, THATS why it's not for everyone. It's no about interest, it's about accessibility
Interesting take. As a complete newbie to Paradox games, I had a different take. Took a very long time to understand what was going on, since I knew nothing about primogeniture. Where the reviewer saw stories and people, I saw panels filled with numbers. Gave it 30 hours, it never came to life for me. I took over Ireland and then Alba invaded, game over. Not for me.
Hope you review marvel avengers game...
When they've sorted out the bugs, this game will be golden.
I bounced so hard off of ckii on every one of a dozen or more attempts. But god DAMN am I loving CK3. Two hours in, I was hooked, so I refunded the game... Just so I could rebuy the Royal Edition instead. I fully expect to get hundreds of hours out of this game, and knowing Paradox and the number of expansions to come, that could easily roll into thousands of hours.
