- I show my favorite methods of how to remove stickers and sticker residue from a bicycle frame. This is not for original factory decals which are usually under a layer of clear coat paint. But this method can be used for bike shop stickers, warning labels, or the kinds of stickers that kids sometimes plaster on.

The stickers is what holds a Huffy together.
Great tips! I've got a Redline Oil sticker under my down tube from a previous owner and that thing is holding on for dear life! I am looking forward to trying these tips to remove it finally!
I've been using benzine and ligher fluid to remove stickers for years but then I discovered that most stickers are almost as easily removed with WD-40 which I always have at hand and it doesn't smell that hard so I have no problem using it in house.
The easiest way to remove stickers. Is to just rub some oil, not thick oil.(baby oil, sunflower, or any thin oil) around the edges of the sticker you wish to remove. Then leave it overnight
to find its way under the sticker. Then just peel it off. And then just remove any glue residue,
with more oil. On larger stickers, or to make it work faster. Just put pin pricks across the
surface of the sticker and just rub the oil over the whole sticker.
Hope that's helpful
Loved the video on chain length....Really helpful, thanks :)
Your are absolutely right, the cleaners like white gas or alcohol based will remove the glue without damaging painging.
awesome to see you wearing socks in your workshop/garage.
Just what I needed, as usual. Thanks!
WD40 works well for getting the residue off
Normally I use WD-40 but it did not work so well the last time I did it. This looks like a better way to go. Thanks RJ!
Lighter fluid. . . great minds think alike. Also great for degreasing bearings and other parts during a rebuild or tune up (using a glass bowl or old ash tray), removing crayon and grease pencil marks, etc. We also keep a can in the laundry area. Good stuff, fairly cheap and reasonably safe.
Lighter fluid is the best solvent I've found for this job - it's also good for degreasing surfaces before you apply stickers.
Excellent. I have some stickers to remove. Was going to use just a heat gun. Thank you.
I once removed custom painted signage from both my truck doors with MEK. (PVC pipe cleaner/primer, clear)....... worked great....
use that paint thinner for chain degreaser
best deagreaser out there
Would also recommend Eucalyptus oil to remove stickers/sticker glue! Natural solution and I use it all the time 👍
Hey RJ! love the videos
You sound somewhat like Mr. Robot! from the TV show
A Guitar pick works great too they are thin and flexible, nice job RJ
I've removed many City Registration stickers with similar techniques
worked like a charm for some hideous warning labels that i couldnt take off until now! :D
some stickers have a resin base glue...i use oil thinner to remove the glue from the paint.. it does the job too
I was waiting for the hair dryer to catch the lighter fluid on fire
Haha yeah could have happened if the hair dryer was old and bad...
That's a sick bike
Nice! I like the lighter fluid idea I will try that soon.
I buy 1 to 3 used bikes a week and fix them up. one of the things I do all the time is removing stickers that should not be there. but most of the stickers have been there for years getting dried by the sun, wet from the rain and frozen during winter. and when i try to take them of they brake immediately I cant even get them started in in many cases. the ones you are taking of on the video would be almost the best case scenario for me.
Do you have any recommendation on how to get this stickers of quickly and easily?
because I have only managed to take them of with a lot of effort and time. coming back to the bike once a day to just do a little.
(like someone carving his way out of jail with a spoon)
Thank you!
This is my go to method.
Personally, I'd wear gloves for the lighter fluid
What on earth was the previous owner thinking?! :P
triflow is good for removing sticker residue
Heyy, can you plz help me with a problem. So I recently took apart my bike to paint it, but when I try to install the bolt for fork and handlebar the bolt keeps spinning so it doesnt tighten them up, what could be the problem and solution ?
Was i a quill stem or a threadless new type
@@downloaderbyproxy93 im sure hes fixed it by now lol
@@ihsaanahmed9269 no we must know. quill or threadless
kerosene will remove sticker glue but not sure if it may damage or fade paint :(
acetone every shop keeper has it for removing price labels
Use Eucalyptus oil, apply wait a minute and remove the glue much safer
Genuinely, great solution
Do you have a video about removing the factory paint?
Nope. You can use a chemical stripper or media blasting are probably a couple of the easiest ways.
RJ The Bike Guy I would use chemical because media abrasion might get some abrasive in places of the bike you don't want it no matter how careful you are and even if you just have a frame without pedals, and other moving things attached you might get abrasive in there that will decrease life of the frame and/ or the parts.
Without the pedals? If I was going to have a frame stripped, it would be stripped to the bare frame.
can i use this technic to remove original brand stickers from the bike ?
Not usually, because they are not stickers. They are decals that applied before the frame is clear coated. So you would have to remove the paint.
Bug and tar remover. Best thing for stickers. Made for paint.
Nice trick. How you ever worked in wood and kitchen cabinets? This is a common step in that industry..
Nope. But I have bought/sold a lot of books and have used lighter fluid to remove stickers from the dust covers for years as it does a nice clean job and doesn't damage them at all.
I am learning a lot from your videos thanks Sr.
prepsol would work the same way
How many bikes do you have ? :o
A bunch.
RJ The Bike Guy Most of the time 1 video = 1 bike :D Do you keep em all ?
No.
Anyone else notice rj working in his socks lol
1:24 From experience, I do know that lighter fluid is bad on plastics whereas Goo Gone is not.
how much should i heat it up to soften the sticker?
Until it softens the glue.
and how can i see if the glue is softened?
When you can start to peel the label off.
Can i use another tool to peel it off? (i really dont want to peel it with my hands)
LUL LOL plastic razor blades or plastic putty knives can help get an edge up and pliers will help. Be careful to not nic the paint
i usually use a hair dryer and a credit card or ice scraper
the plastic tool is called a fishbone ( fiskben) here in Sweden... little unnecessary information
Yep, it's actually bone. I bought it for use on books. Folding down the edges of dust jacket covers and also help for removing stickers.
A credit card works pretty well too.
Mineral Spirits
I think you can use gasoline as well.
Was that a librarian's tool?
Yes. A bone tool.
I used them when I was a public school librarian.
Also wd40 works pretty well
I heard that WD40 works just as well.
🤔🥇
Brake cleaner will do the job also
Brake cleaner will usually peel the paint off real fast.
actually you dont need those just pour hot water
*I get annoyed when seeing bare shifter cable on bikes. Also, it’s weird that the cables run along the side.*
Why? Less cable housing, less compression, stronger braking.
@@RJTheBikeGuy - *Because the cable is exposed to the elements and oxidation, i.e. corrosive rust. I have found that non-name brand shifter cable and housing works well after coating inside with with Park Tool Polylube. So much easier to push through housing, and the lubrication is protected from the elements.*
in the uk we use sticker erasers mounted in a drill take a look in my play list safer than setting yourself on fire and takes off factory decals.
... imagine is a sticker company made a sticker remover chemical or process. they would make a killing.
