  • If your baby hates tummy time and you're struggling to get them to do it, this video will help! You're going to learn 5 ways to help improve your baby's head and neck control that don't involve tummy time.
    These are really gentle, easy things you can do to help develop your babies neck strength and head control so they will eventually feel more comfortable and confident when you do put them on their tummy.
    One your baby's head control improves they will be much more comfortable doing tummy time.
    This doesn't mean tummy time can be forgotten. It's still recommended that you do it. But for babies who simply refuse to do it early on, these activities and exercises are an effective way to build up to the point where they are ready for tummy time. The goal here is to gently support your baby and help them develop to the point where they are able to do it without getting distressed.

      I hope you can answer this... New father here of a 5mo old... he seems to be right on time with all his milestones except one (I think)... While on his back he refuses to reach his arms straight out (up) to grab anything... he will grab and hold and even switch toys from hand to hand if we lie the toy down beside him or hold the toy barely above his tummy... His arms seem stiff and he keeps them bent in, he keeps pulling back when i gently try to extend his arms... but if he's on his side he can reach out fine... any thoughts? I hope I was clear enough... thanks 😊

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před 2 lety +2

      @@Magic7Dragon it could because he doesn't yet have the arm strength to raise his arms up fully against gravity or he might have stiff arms. If it is just due to strength re: lifting his arm against gravity then I would check to see if he is able to lift his arms up past his shoulders when you are helping him to sit up. So place him in sitting on your lap facing away from you and place your hands around his ribcage to give postural support. Then have someone hold a toy in front of him in line with his chest and then slowly raise the toy up when he reaches for it and see if he grabs it. If he does extend his arms to grab it then I would assume it is strength related. If he doesn't extend his arms and straighten them then it might be due to stiff muscles. If you are concerned I would just pop into your baby's doctor or OT to have a quick look at your son in person. I hope that helps!

      @@EmmaHubbard Well, you obviously know what you're talking about... I sat him on my lap and my wife held his favorite toy in front of him, he reached out (to our amazement) and when she took toy up he started to go for it but then retracted his arms back to his side... What does that mean to you?

    My 6 weeks old little one is not really interested in toys just yet, so I found a way to make her to turn her head by placing my hand (or finger) on the left/right corner of her mouth to trigger the sucking reflex. Once she starts moving her head in that direction I simply guide her by moving my finger all the way to that side and then switch back to the other side.
    This helped her to strengthen her neck muscles a lot, so now she easily turns her head during sleep and not just sticking to her favourite side any more 😊

    @emma thanks for all your amazing videos! I have a question - my baby girl hates tummy time but enjoys baby wearing. does baby wearing count towards the total time per day of tummy time? also, will baby bearing hinder building upper body strength because it takes away from her having the need to use her arms? ps: baby is 3 months old and currently does around 15 minutes of tummy time day. I am working on increasing that daily. thanks so much in advance!!

      @EmmaHubbard  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi and a huge congratulations on the pending arrival of your second born!
      Tummy time can be really upsetting and hard for colicky newborns. In this video on tummy time for newborns I cover some different tummy time positions to start off with when they are a newborn. Often I find doing tummy time on your chest, in your arms (football hold) and on an exercise ball best for colicky newborns. I show you how to do these positions in this video. czcams.com/video/usv1Q3Z8F_Q/video.html
      I hope it helps!

    Hello from Greece. My baby girl stopped being very active. She is 9 months old. She stopped going from sitting to tummy, she is now afraid to do so. She is not very interest in toys, nor new toys, nor household items anymore. She is only army crawling but she also stopped doing so through the house, only crawling in the living room. She looks unmotivated whatever i do. I did some exercises you showed in your past videos and she liked them, now she doesn't want them to do either. I'm worried, is it because she is teething? She has only 1 teeth so far.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před 2 lety

      Unfortunately because I can’t see your little one in person I cannot say why she has stopped being so active. Given that you are concerned it might be a good idea to check in with your baby’s doctor who can see her in person and discuss your concerns.
