- I love to just pick up the camera and go for a walk and then to film whatever I see! But lately youtube has not been fun for me. I found myself writing lists of topics to film and then trying to find ways to make the content negative, so that I can create more controversy and get more views.

Sam, Privyet. You're a very talented YTer. You showed us the rebirth of life in Vladimir in spring while discussing a totally different topic. This video was great, seeing how the town changes from one season to another. As for your dilemma, we live in a time of mass confusion and anything that avoids participating in that process will stand out over time. Train to run the marathon and forget the sprint. You'll only pull a hamstring. Honor over clicks. Patience over impatience. The meal that takes hours to prepare is always healthier than fast food. Take the healthy approach. Blagosloveniya.

Depression's a bitch, Sam. Myself and that nasty beastie have a looooong history together and collectvely, I've probably lost years of my life to it. Hope you manage to pull your head out soon. Iike your videos because you don't do politics and that, and I would stop watching your channel if you started making up ugly stories about your country, You stick it out, man, just the way you have been - good humor, novel interviews with regular Russians walking around in the streets, maybe a few nights out with after some sportng event when everyon eyou're with is bound to get crazy. You'll see, man, over time, your number will grow. They will. If you switch from posistive content to negative, you'd lose a whole bunch of all of us who watch you already.

You hit the nail on the head. It is exactly why I haven't posted anything from Russia. It's a lot of effort and not worth against ones moral code to please idiots. You got some sort of balance and clearly a lot of patience. I enjoy your channel precisely because you not faking it.

I've enjoyed watching your content for quite a while now. I encourage you to keep being your positive self. You giving out Kinder eggs is super awesome and I enjoyed the bunker and other such tours.There are tons of people putting out that negative content that I could go watch for that. I don't know how helpful my opinion or what I prefer to see is for helping you get more views though. Also, regarding depression, an important thing to do when you feel that coming on is to force yourself to increase activity.

The bit about KGB listening through the walls cracked me up. For me personally I enjoy seeing/hearing about Russian activities of all sorts, everyday living and recreation, i.e. ice skating, football (non-American type) & other normal civilian events. Anything with the Russian women whether in the forefront or background is always a good idea, sex sells world over. I have developed a fondness for Russia and it's people through yours and other similar channels that I didn't have even a year ago. It's a welcome relief from all the normal propaganda. Hang in there.

Sam, I found you on youtube some month ago and I adore your channel for telling about good side of Russia - I looked at my country with new eyes and started appreciate Russia more. I am greatful to you for this. Keep doing your content the way you've done it before, please, don't spoil your soul with negativity - there are things which worth more that money and kind sincere heart is one of them. This time of season is always depressing: take some vitamins, get more sun, take a rest at some good place, reduce communication for some time and things should get better!
Imagine looking at half the country being 4th world and poor and depressive and thinking better now than before lmao. Here in germany the tiniest town looks 10 times wealthier and no grannies needing to boil snow for water

I think you can mix and match genres, and it doesn't have to be necessarily negative. People like watching comparison videos, people like watching food and other people doing crazy things, like " swimming in a toxic lake". There must be a statistic of what topics bring more views. You can throw in one "popular" topic video and then make 3 videos of eating pizza.

Its not the negativity driving these channels success
Its the soap opera.
Its the curiosity of the unknown parts of russia that we never get to see. Its the stories of people and their lives that are so captivating that we don’t get to live. I want to move to Russia but am unable to at the moment; so these videos I watch to be there until i can get there.
Todays video was amazing with the old houses, and contrast between these gorgeous houses etc. It was engaging.

Sam, by nature, You, no doubts, are Man of Action. I mean "action" is opposite of "re-action". Action is a step into unknown, to the new. Action starts from the heart and courage is its companion. You are the man who chooses between old and new. The old (or re-action) brings a depression. The journey with heart heals any depression. That is it.

Here's my 2 cents worth, Sam. I quite enjoyed seeing the buildings you showed on the clip. Maybe a bit more commentary on the scenery. As for negative or positive, I think that should not be relevant. Just be real. I like to see the new buildings and I like to see the old buildings. I like to see the remnants of history. I don't care if some people think it makes Russia look bad, they should harden up. I'll tell you what would make me unsubscribe in a short time - sarcasm, lying, extreme exaggeration (sarcasm), too mundane, like going for a coffee or a pizza. I was first attracted to your b-road channel (though I didn't subscribe, only because I didn't think I needed to). Those old historical places are very interesting, and when you speak to people to find out their comments about their area is very interesting. I don't like forced discussion which is cringey. I don't like comments that are obviously cherry-picked. I've never been to Russia, and I want to see all of it, warts and all. Unbiased. That, to me is what makes your channel interesting. There have been some episodes that I didn't watch, because I could tell the content was boring or manipulated. You could do all the sensational stuff if you want, like conspiracy theories, and I'm sure you'll get a lot of takers, but you will get a different audience, so choose wisely. Adding other people here and there is definitely a plus.

Well, I’m guilty of clickbait and using politics for views too! But I’m tired of it! It’s very demoralising to need to think of how to add politics to a normal video, so to get the video into the algorithm and to have it shown to people!

Alternative idea. Focus on everything positive you can find eg families enjoying dacha's store full of food. Find everything the world does not expect to hear . Day trips out of Moscow to smaller interesting places such as Tver. All the best with inspiration.
The end of winter is a tough time. Tired of the cold and snow but warm spring days are still a few weeks away. It is depressing. You do a good job and keep plugging away. The quality of a channel is not always the view count. I would offer the suggestion of consistency. The channels I watch the most post on the same day every week and therefore become part of my schedule.

I for one, really enjoy seeing your true, everyday experience of Russia. Russia has always been shrouded in mystery and most North Americans never get to see what Russia is like for her citizens. I'm sorry to hear you've been depressed. I think the way Covid-19 was handled by most governments around the world had a deeply negative effect on many, many people. Hopefully the nice spring weather will help. I would stay true to yourself and your content. I know there are many others who will discover and enjoy your content, it just may be a bit slower growing then the click bait channels. I absolutely love those beautiful old homes, btw!❤

Its such a shame if you change your ethos. You will get depressed. Trust me everyone is depressed. You might find we are all suffering post covid stress too. Everyday should find some artisans who make things. The Russophobia took years to cultivate. Why the hell not talk to her. Show her. Reassure her. That would be great. Stick with it.
Show them your content and ignore those who don't want their Russian ideology to be wrong.
My brother Oleg Tsarev has a hotel in Yalta called the Kirov. It's kind of like a Spa thing and they have all kinds of activities. Do go and take your camera with you.

Impulsive people live with their instincts and emotions lit up. Their attention is fleeting but if you shock or scare them (appeal to the primitive side of their mind) they will watch, at least for a short time. They can't stop themselves because their thinking brain is not engaged. --- This is the negative stuff that leads where you don't want to go. It's a land with lots of subscribers and rather few who watch every video or all of each video.
Alternatively, you can appeal to people whose thinking mind is in control. They will watch because there is something interesting... usually because someone is interesting to them... their story, community, long-term projects... a story for them to keep up on. --- 'B' Road offers interesting things and short stories ... but other than meeting someone briefly, we don't get to know anyone and don't engage in a longer story arc. I think of channels like this as being 'lifestyle' or 'personality'. --- If you find someone you banter with well, that could be a start. --- For the 'thinking' approach, subscriber attachments come more slowly but last longer (and many will watch all videos and are more likely to like and share... fewer, but higher quality subscribers).
You've probably thought this through. Best of luck with whatever you try. :)
The best way for me to pull myself out of a deep depressive phase, is to do something for someone else. Or visit with the elderly, who often get set aside and forgot about.

a potentially good way to make content that has a balance of positive and negative that doesn't compromise your integrity could be things like top best and worst russian films in the summer season or best and worst restaurants in whichever city and things like that. only make negative content on things you actually feel negative about. At the same time, a silver lining to this problem can be that people click on your videos expecting or wanting something negative to confirm their biases against Russia, but then see something positive and have their prejudices challenged

Here's what may get tons of views for you. Abandoned military locations and walking around WWII battle sites. I do like that stuff but would much rather see you doing fun things with a pretty girl at your side.
Find a abandoned cold war location, make a video, research it and post. That will get you views.

@SamsRussianAdventures Yes I've watched it Sam. I do like all your videos but more people want to see military stuff. Abandoned airfields and bunkers and places where the Russians fought the Germans. Give some history of the places. Try it . Military stuff is hot now. And old Soviet military stuff is really hot in the west, especially in the US.
An old airfield with a few MIG-17's would be cool.

Im sure if you speak to local people they have surly know places of interest or find a tourist information center and see if they know of places to visit i.e. old war memorials - old soviet towns - Churches - old mines - parks etc... Ying and Yang. .. play with the title and just be frank with your audience. We're not all monsters end of the day just tired living among them.

The Australian family in the Altai have a successful channel, and they're totally positive.
The same with so many other English language channels, such as Countryside Acres.
This shows that people are attracted to an engaging unfolding story.
If you want make it commercially viable then you need to go with what market wants.
If you want do whatever you want then you can’t expect to make money unless you are really talented and brilliant.

You are struggling with the idea of making content that would portray Russia and Russians negatively because you don’t agree and feel like you would be lying to your audience. The content has to be about you and your life in Russia, so Sams Adventures should be showing your adventures IMHO. I follow other channels which show their lives in their respective countries, and I hate when these bloggers have a negative thumbnail to get people to watch, it seems to be a style used widely but if used too much just turns people off from watching. So go camping, or be a tourist in Russia and take us with you, or do up a property in Russia or set up a language school etc.

Here is a lovely example of a couple sharing their lives since they traveled in Argentina during covid and I continued to follow them when they returned home to Italy to rebuild their lives. Sometime the thumb nail used highlights a problem they have to overcome, so I assume this is to attract views but their content is never negative it is always positive. At the end of each video they would teach the viewer a phrase in Italian which is a nice touch too. I hope it helps inspire you to continue to make great content. I think THIS VIDEO was good content. I don’t understand why the Russians don’t want to restore and equip Vladimir and Suzdal and make these cities as comfortable for living and attractive for tourism as Moscow or St. Petersburg, because Vladimir is very ancient and, in addition, this city is the third capital Rus after Novgorod and Kiev.
Vladimir has lots of tourists and most will stay in hotels. The shabby houses are privately owned. Suzdal is incredible. It has millions of tourists each year and is a picturesque Russian town.
They are as beautiful, maybe better than Moscow, because they preserved old Russia spirit. Of course they are smaller and don't have subway.....

Hook up with a local and have a wander, just like today, they can spot things you never noticed. That water pump for instance, you could make a ten minute vid talking about why people have to use it etc

Sam! I care about Russia, not Putin. Russia was before Putin and will be after Putin. 🤨 For example, there is a beautiful Russian church at 3:45, you can really stick the camera in there. I click on several pages. There is also a city in Siberia, there is still snow there. (Yesterday in Budapest it was already 29 degrees Celsius, snow is already exotic for us.) These old wooden houses are beautiful! They should be renovated and saved by creating an open-air museum the size of a city block. You have great content.
Stop the focus on negative because people are more interested in human interest or unique experiences. I know a girl who started her channel only a couple months ago based in Moscow but travels to easier to get to destinations. She only features interesting positive stories and has over 50,000 subs already. Talking about how you do not get enough views is not productive and might be why views are dropping. Find interesting topics that potential visitors would be interested in seeing. Go to other towns that have interesting histories or attractions, interview locals on something interesting they are doing. It is depressing to watch another video about how mean YT is when your complaining it killing both views and YT promotion. With such an interesting and usually misinformation being promoted by western media, whining about algos only creates resistance in promoting videos over and over on same topic. Go on a trip and tape enough content to fill dozen uploads.
Have a round table discussion with locals who speak English about an interesting or uplifting topic.
Every time I walk from my city center apartment in St Petersburg I meet someone interesting who has a story to tell, everyone is positive and engaged in life and growth, but I am not a youtuber., but I am a photographer, and can't really remember a negative story to even bother retelling. Everyone I meet is bright, articulate and outgoing and too focused on their passion to even bother with negativity, which is a major reason I moved to Russia 24 years ago after many visits dating to 1976. I am writing this from Old Town Tallinn Estonia on a 4 day visit and heading back to St Petersburg this afternoon. Almost every thing I encounter in Russia is positive and why I live there and not in my native USA.
Why not make a list of future videos and send the list with brief description to western friends for approval and I can guarantee none of the negative videos ragging on YT will make the cut
