miyako the dean guitarist is also an amazing pianist and keyboard player and she records those parts you hear and then pipes it in during the live. i love it cuz it really makes the song complete. they are the most amazing team of guitarists on the planet imo. can play anything fast or even slow in any style they want. i love how in almost every song they trade off on lead solos and end up doing flawless dual harmonies to finish it off.i think that song is from the daughters of the dawn concert that is in my top 3 lives i've ever heard [and that is a lot]. if you have access to it you need to listen to the entire 1 hour and 47 minute concert and you just won't believe it. i think i may have heard one slightly missed note during the entire thing. they are the samurai power princesses and nobody can touch them.

There have always been lots of great Japanese bands, but the internet has made Japanese music more accessible.

Yeah, See Metallica, they make a lot of mistakes live and are still one of the greatest... Only band that rarely do any mistake at all, is Nightwish... but style, technicality and speed is different between these bands. Some of the stuff these ladies play, is super hard that most people could not even dream of performing.

Backing vocals: "DIE" "BY" "MY" "SIDE" . I was sure you would notice the "wrong" note in the chorus. I love Miyako so much that I always cringe but the explanation is easy: unison bends on a guitar with tremolo (especially Floyd Rose) are tricky because while bending, the tremolo tend to lower its pitch. Many floyd users use some kind of device like tremolo stabilizer (replacing a spring and stabilizing the pitch when bending).
Organ is a pre-recorded track, but it's Miyako playing it in studio (she's an amazing keybordist! on the live bluray that's coming next july, she play Chopin etude op.10 on a white 4/4 grand piano)

Man, this is honestly my favourite new band in probably 20 years. Every time I watch them I end up with my jaw dropping or a huge smile on my face. It shouldn't be a shock to see a "girl" group playing like this as there aren't exactly any physical barriers to playing instruments, but even so it still carries something of a shock factor because there are so few, i fancy, playing this kind of music to this level. Every single one of them is incredible, and I always look forward to seeing what you think when you upload a new Lovebites video. Excellent stuff.

my problem with western female rock/metal bands is that many of them try too hard to ACT like a rock/metal stars, the way the dress, sing and move like the male counterparts do.
On the other hand, Japanese female bands act, sing and dress like ladies, maid, anime cosplay style characters, cute teenage girls or whatever but they also have great musicianship and stage presence. The contrast creates bigger impacts on people's minds.
This is why I like Japanese female bands.

    • @daniel1138

I am curious as to what you'd think of Halestorm, the American rock band that inspired Lovebites name with one of their songs. Lzzy Hale is a badass rocker that does sport all the leather and black that is associated with Rock music, but it's her own style and far from masculine. I can see where the stereotype about western rock bands comes from, but then again, there is also a stereotype about how Japanese women look, so by dressing like anime characters and the like, it's propagating that stereotype.
Not saying you're right or wrong, I just think they are a lot more similar in the aspect of the aesthetics mirroring some kind of stereotype.
I do love that idea of the contrast between the Anime Girl stereotype and the kind of music that bands like Lovebites plays. It's a fun way of twisting the stereotype around.

I was anticipating this! Nice analysis, as always. Two comments: Some fans actually have said they think Asami is not hard-core enough for a band this intense--as you said, it's a matter of taste. Her background was R&B before joining Lovebites, so she has power but also some smoke in her voice, which I love. The keyboards were pre-recorded by Miyako, the guitarist who took the slow-burn solo in this one. She also composes most of their music. Thank you!

Easy to forget, but some of the affectation is because she’s singing phonetically, she’s only conversational in English, not fluent. Writes with a metal thesaurus and an English coach. And just as you said, nice to know they’re human, they actually have pretty good lyrics, with just a handful of indicators in 40+ songs that English isn’t their first language.

Great reaction again, Chase! Personally I'm in the 'love Asami's vocals' camp. Taking into account that she's not singing in her own language at all, and that she's getting better and better with each release, I think she's great. It would be cool if you could check out one of their slower tracks. There's a song on the latest album called A Frozen Serenade which is possibly my favourite thing they've done to date, and she's amazing on it. But, of course, there's no video for it and I don't think they've performed it live yet because the tour got cut short by the crisis. In fact, most of my favourite songs of theirs don't have videos, or fan cams of decent quality, on CZcams.
I hope at some point you'll get around to one of the other all-female Japanese metal bands, Mary's Blood, so you can see the Queen of Shred, SAKI, and my favourite vocalist, EYE. Again, with Mary's Blood, there aren't many videos available, or there are only short promo versions on YT. My favourite is Counter Strike, which you *can* find in full here: www.dailymotion.com/video/x516l1p or there's the live version of Coronation Day: czcams.com/video/5XAN0xy4CIs/video.html which is immense.

Love this song, epic thrash. Having Midori semi-nonsense semi melodic thrash solo, and then the Gary Moore imitation over the major key yet oddly melancholy break, song practically has everything. Was the only song that main songwriters Bass Miho and Dean Miyako worked on together. Miyako is also a classical pianist, wish you could see the live intro to Empty Daydream where she and singer Asami show great variety, but uploaded made it private.
They also collaborate with keyboardist Mao in the studio, he generally arranges half of the songs (the other half Miyako writes alone, both the songs you’ve reacted to before). Mao started off with Fuki in Lightbringer and works with her often, solo, Unlucky Morpheus, etc. But on his quest to write the perfect pop power metal song, he’s also collaborated with Mary’s Blood, and last year on Mardelas’s 4th release, temporarily jokingly called Maodelas. Singer Marina was in Destrose with Lovebites founders Miho and Drummer Haruna, to me she combines the best of Fuki and Asami, try their latest “Apocalypse” czcams.com/video/Wd8P7wTnWJs/video.html
My fav Lovebites song was a challenge from Miyako to Mao to write competing songs based on a Rachmaninov theme (piano concerto 2, aka “all by myself”); both songs made the EP (same as Break the Wall), but prog & chorale, not blues n thrash. Live, “Under the Red Sky”, it also refers to a middle eastern musical theme from their Hammer of Wrath, and lyrically follows up their own song (also called) Apocalypse, music & lyrics (subtitled btw) really jerk listener around, finding hope in face of nuclear destruction. And listen in that left channel, they really let Midori run wild all over this one! czcams.com/video/KChT0QfuhKE/video.html
And just because, here’s Fuki Commune, featuring Mao, doing a song originally recorded by Doll$Boxx, love seeing Mao, and BabyMetal 8-stringer Isao, dueling on the extended solos (and I picture the original Doll$Boxx ladies nodding approval, they’re my favs tho) “Omocha no Heitai”(toy soldier) live czcams.com/video/mJOjczLoeP8/video.html Not sure, but drummer is probably Galneryus & Unlucky Morpheus speed demon Fumiya, relentless as Haruna! (tho this one is practically a pop song...)

@Aratha Sena As I understand, English is taught in Japanese schools but notoriously poorly and it's hard to shake bad habits afterward. Any good English speaker has most likely taken ESL classes overseas.
There's also the alphabet issue. Other Asians have to use the English alphabet, but Japanese can get away with using their own phonetic alphabet (Hiragana and Katakana). I've tried to read English written in Katakana and sometimes it takes me a few seconds just to figure out what it's saying. That's because you get only an approximation. Unless you know what the word is supposed to sound like, reading Katakana verbatim will sound weird (ie ra-bu bai-tsu)

Well...since you're doing multiple tracks from Lovebites....then you are, in my opinion, obligated to do a reaction to the song and band that inspired Lovebite's name. The song, "Love Bites (So Do I)" by Halestorm. I believe that such a reaction would greatly appease the Rock Gods.

Miyako has said that Epilogue was the hardest track to record properly on Clockwork Immortality BECAUSE it was a slower, more laidback composition. ANY errors would be very noticable.

Would love your take on Daria Stavrovich: czcams.com/video/AW3EJiRD0ho/video.html
She's a Russian metal singer with the bands Slot and Nookie, and the above is Circles on the Water from her stint on the Russian Voice.
(this is the full band doing it: czcams.com/video/QFKG0j9PLkQ/video.html )
While there, she also did a cover of Sia's Chandelier, if you want to hear her sing in English, but 'Circles' is my personal favourite.
(Fun fact: she only went on to promote Slot, and ended up having to ask people to stop voting for her as the Voice live tour would clash with the band's own)

I think her voice for this song, needs to be a forceful as it is. If she sang every song in the same manner, yes it would be too much. So happy you found this live version and it has remained on your channel. Not sure how many Lovebites, reactions get blocked but they do not seem as bad as Band Maid, for blocks.

Awesome masters of their instruments. The powermetal stuff doesn't touches me much - but that's more a question of my taste than how they deliver, but I really love when they go towards Trash-Metal. Yes, unfortunately Asami often overstresses her voice a bit to much for my taste, especially live. Exceptional musicians, saw them live four times, but in my opinion not the most novel ones from Japan, very much adapted to western taste. But they are young, technically allready top tier and there is a ton of potential to grow to a real interesting and diverse band like e.g. Band-Maid or Doll$Boxx/Gacharic Spin or Aldious, which in my opinion are much more refreshing interesting and novel. But I expect much more interesting stuff coming from Lovebites.

I think an issue with the vocals has to do with the language differences between Japanese and English. Almost all the sounds of the Japanese language are in the English language, the reverse is not true. When someone gets close to pronouncing something correct it can sound off putting, possibly even doing something of an uncanny valley effect. This could lead to native English speakers feeling off-put or uncomfortable when hearing a Japanese speaker using English words.
The following is at the edge of my knowledge but I think I can make an useful example. A phoneme is a unit of sound that distinguishes one word from another. What is a phoneme is subjective to the speakers but it can generally give an abstract measurement of speech sounds.
Japanese has about 5 vowel phonemes(very sharp and distinct) and 15 consonant phonemes. The number of phonemes in the English language is hard to nail down given the variation within the language but it is something like 14-20 vowels and 24 consonants. That is an insane gap to cross especially for someone who didn't focus on learning a difficult second language on top of musical skills.
I love the sound of all the instruments the band has including their vocals. I grew up with a love for Japanese culture, people, history and.... video games so I like the sound of Japanese speakers using my language. I learned to fold paper air planes from Shibata Sensei who taught me while my dad was doing Aikido, its one of my earliest clear memories. So this is just me trying to think out loud and understand what others are hearing.

Ok. I guess I'll be that guy. I don't particularly agree with Chase on liking this specific performance. Parts of it? Absolutely. "Banging Head... GO!" is my favorite part of this whole song, and I'm not even sure that what she said. As a whole? I'm sorry, I don't like this all that much. Instances like this are why bands clean up live performances before they become official releases. In my opinion, the things which I see as problems in this performance aren't a reflection of talent or ability, just of (again, my opinion) bad decisions in the moment.
Doc Loco gave a really good explanation of what was happening (thank you Doc!) with the guitar. When I first heard those out of tune notes start in the song, my thought was, "Whichever one is singing backup is a little pitchy. I'm sure they'll correct it." Oh, it's a guitar occupying what would often be the harmonizing vocal space... and it's pitchy... and it never got better. These ladies are INCREDIBLY talented. You don't play as well as they do without having a good ear. The rest of the song was in tune and well played. So I can only assume they heard it and chose to ignore it. I don't get that. If it's the guitar / parts of the guitar itself, as Doc mentioned as a possibility, then that's something predictable. Use a guitar with a different trem system for this song. If you can't reliably bend to the note live, whatever the reason, then don't bend it - just play the note straight. If you've only practiced it a certain way, and think doing it differently will foul you up, skip playing that part when (as happened in this song) it comes around again.
Absolutely, live performances almost need flaws and song modifications to personalize them and give the audience a unique experience. I just didn't like that as the song went on I could reliably predict when my ears were going to cringe from (what I'm assuming was unintended) dissonance, and that it was going to continue through entire subsections of the song. It's not like Chase missed it - his face turned to stone for those parts of the song - he looked to the many positives within the performance in his commentary, and it's not like he didn't mention it. I couldn't quite get over the musical choice and it kind of ruined this performance for me. Happens to the best of them. Geddy Lee used to call attention to his own foul-ups by smacking himself in the head during shows, but it doesn't hurt his rep, and the same principle would apply here.

There is an odd disconnect with me with Lovebites, and a lot of the J-Power Metal Scene. They are all immensely talented. Supremely so. But it's largely.... the same exact sound I hear whenever I pop on Germanic or Scandinavian P-Metal. I think if I came into them first, I'd feel the same way toward Sonata Arctica, etc.
I did enjoy the melodic interlude a lot, though.
It's fantastically performed but ...has nothing unique to it, maybe? I dunno. Doesn't help that it's not my favorite style of Metal, either though, which probably don't help. I appreciate they have a slightly thrashier feel than some though. I think what draws me to groups like Band-Maid more is they simply have a more unique sound to me.
But just to ensure I get all the hate mail, I also just don't get into Dream theater, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc. lol.

I don't like the vocals, and not because they are clean, I like clean vocals. Something about it was off, not only the vibratos, but the tone/timbre. Yes, i agree. Asami is a great singer (she has got the pipe for it) but her singing has that a bit of forced accent thing. It's typical of an Asian person trying to compensate for trying to enunciate the words correctly. It's what it is as she only lived a short time in Hawaii. I do understand her situation (trust me, I know) so even though her singing is NOT my favorite I still like them very much due to their songs; I like Miyako ;-) My favorite is still Band-Maid; I love Saiki's vocal as she is so clean and balanced.

You picked out lots of good points in the song so I will just list my criticism. Those vocals were pretty lacking. She stayed within one octave and it was like she thought the vibrato was enough dynamics to carry the song. I don't know this band well enough to know if this is the norm, but it feels like a gimmick more than the obvious talent of the rest of the band.
