I am sure he was a sweet, good man, but letting your kid unsupervised with a man you do not know is risky and there is nothing wrong with being careful. Very sweet story though
@@222222ania I'm quite sure that she never once left her daughter alone with him. She doesn't strike me as an idiot. Children are very intuitive. I don't think the daughter would have been drawn to him in the first place if he was slimey. Kind of like dogs know when someone is no good . Remember the kid approached him.

When she looked up to the sky, with complete faith on her face that he was there, I almost lost it. Instead, I smiled; and felt happiness that she had such a friend in her life, and that he was now going to be watching over her.
I read this comment and almost lost it as well when the story reached that point. She is a very wise little girl.

Reading his obituary, I was surprised to learn Dan had a PhD, and taught Mathematics at the college level. He was also an Air Force veteran and private pilot. Isn't it sad how such an accomplished person ends up on a news program toward the end of his life, depicted as a lonely old man with no reason to live until he met this little girl. Add to this the fact he had six children (and twelve grandchildren) of his own, who curiously are never mentioned in these segments, and it makes you aware of how even someone with a full life and large family can still end up utterly alone in the end.

@@user-nq6um4bs5y I know plenty of very nice parents whose children visit rarely after they move away. Kids grow up, move 1000 miles away, have their own kids and jobs and only visit for a couple of holidays a year.
He wasn't alone the little girl was there for him and gave him a gift that maybe his family couldn't give him. Unconditional ❣️ Love.

O W true but there’s not always a reason. A lot of people consider themselves to busy within their own lives to visit older relatives, even parents. I know of a few instances where decently nice people ended up lonely as an elderly person. I also know a few underserving ppl (formerly abusive) families rally around them in their old age. Ppl are just weird like that.

Angels are very real...I truly believe Nora was sent to him from our higher power and from Mary. I've watched both installments of this story and am moved to tears every time I see it.

That little girl is just an absolute treasure. There aren't any words to describe what she did for that older man. He was absolutely heart broken after the death of his wife and had no reason to even get up in the morning. Then Nora came along and changed all that with a simple hello and a hug. Angels are very real and are around us every day and always...some are seen and some are unseen, but they are there. All one has to do is believe and be tuned in to what is truly around us all.

But having a good friend like Dan also enriched her soul, and that is as special. These two were genuine friends, their ages didn't impact on that at all. How lovely. And that her parents saw it as special, too. People can be good. It's always good to talk to others who need support, no-one can know another's loneliness or sadness ...
I lost my honorary mother when i was about 7, we first met when i was 2, she lived alone next door and didnt has a family, she loved me like her own son for 5 years. Im now an engineer, have just stared a family, still remember all of her love and this story just tearing me up

Imagine how many kids out there could use the love of a sweet grandparent and how many elderly could use the love of a sweet child. Wish we could just connect them somehow like this.
Major kudos to her mother for raising a compassionate child, who will no doubt become a compassionate woman.
She'll remember him for the rest of her life. She'll tell her children about him. When she inevitably hits a rough patch in her life, she'll think of him, and she'll find the strength to carry on. He'll be smiling down on her from the clouds above forever.

What a thoughtful and kind comment. This story touches me deep in the crevices of my heart. We need more loving encounters like Nora and this elderly man. I definitely think these occurrences between the young and old can bridge the gap of misunderstanding and loneliness. There is a song which reminds me of this story. It's called "What The World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love." This was a hit in the early 70's and is a favorite of mine. When I see miraculous encounters like this, it just reaffirms that God is smiling down on us and bringing angels to those in need of love. Thank you for also showing your kind heart in the message you wrote. It feels so nice to see those words written.

Tears, tears, tears!! I have a dear friend, 86 years old, whom I met 2 years ago who also had just lost his wife, we've become very close friends, I met him at a hardware store after recognizing him as a neighbor that lived a mile away ( we had just moved to that rural neighborhood). He was suffering from depression from the loss of his wife too. I bring him a nice hot dinner once a week that lasts him several days. He is now one of my closest buddies, he always says I don't know what I did to deserve you and I say "you've done so many good things for so many people, this is God's way of paying you back" (he was a former pastor). I don't know how much longer he'll be around, I hope for quite some time but this story reminded me of my best buddy, he does as much for me as he says I do for him. Friendships come in all shapes, sizes and ages and can happen to anyone if we just take the time to get to know each other! Thank goodness for this sweet little angel girl who blessed this man's life! They'll be friends into the eternities!!

Can't stop crying. I'm so glad he got to spend 4 years of his life with Nora. I too missed my grandma. She passed away last year and I couldn't even visit her because of the lockdowns.

Perfectly said! As a child i had that moment with an uncle that held my hand and took me through the watermelon garden and explain how things planted and grow. I call it my Academy Award moment.
Back in 2003 I was going through a rough patch, troubles in my relationship, troubles at work, no friends and far from family. I was at my heaviest, felt ugly, defeated and so alone. One day I was sitting at a park bench, this little boy of about 4 or 5 years of age picked up a small rock and offered it to me, he then said "you're pretty" and gave me a huge smile. I was so touched by it that to this day every time I'm feeling down I take a look at the little rock he gave me.
I like to think he was an angel in disguise just like this young girl was for the gentleman. May he R.I.P.

As an "old person" myself, I have grown to learn that there are miracles like this every day, but we often fail to recognize them. But this was no mere "accident," nor was the fact that she bid him goodbye on the day before he passed away. Love is eternal, this I believe.
She really taught us how to look out for elders and love them.
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Augusta, GA-Dr. Daniel Ray Peterson entered into eternal rest on February 10, 2020. Born in Eli, NE, Dr. Peterson lived the last twenty years of his life in the Augusta area. He was a devout Christian and was a regular attendant at Warren Baptist Church. He was a beloved and exceptional mathematics professor and administrator at several colleges. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a pilot and loved flying and he also loved to garden.
Dr. Peterson was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence Peterson and Rachel Garner Peterson and his wives Mary Parker Peterson and Norma Jean Peterson. He is survived by his sons Keith Peterson of California, Gary Peterson of Florida (Chrissy); his daughters Kerri Thole of California (Ken), Julie Surles of Georgia, Janie Ross of Georgia (Brent), Stephanie Bailey of South Carolina (Wayne); 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother; two sisters and dear friend Norah Wood.

I love the story of the two of them. I just found out that he passed. She kept him going for 4 more years. The lesson here is that random acts of kindness, no matter how small, could be huge to the other person.
Nora's mom nailed it when she said "this was humanity at its best, to love and be loved". This is a story that sticks with you and makes you happy just thinking about it.
She was his angel. He died with lots of love. Thank you parents for letting her share her gift of love and kindness

Small children can do wonders with just a smile & a hug, I have seen myself. In 1987 I took my almost 4 year old daughter to a local nursing home & signed her up for the ‘Adopt a Grandparents’ program. I did bc I didn’t want my daughter to grow up being fearful of the elderly like I was when I young. My daughter & I went around the home meeting several of the ladies, these were the ones who had no family or friends, they had no visitors at all. When by daughter found the ‘the special one’ she jumped on her lap & said, “Hi, I’m going to be your special & you can be mine.” For 16 years I bought both of my daughter’s to visit with their ‘friend’ at the nursing home at least once a week. As the girls grew older & more busy with school & friends I continued to visit the nursing home. My last ‘Special Friend’ passed away a few years ago & I still miss her today. RIP Ms. Annabell Harmon

I’m so glad he was able to watch her grow up! Reminds me of how my elderly father enjoys children with purity. It really does give them life.

Edit: I posted this comment a couple months ago when I was at my lowest mental state. I think that people keep assuming that I’m an old person; I’m not lmao. I’m 14, but I did appreciate all the Facebook moms in my comments being really nice to me, it made my day. Totally. I'm only 51 (don't ask me how that happened...I'm still trying to grasp it. lol), but I often comment to my partner when we get home from running errands: "That person was awfully nice and said "How are you?" (or whatever the particular interaction was.) ... and wasn't that nice?"
Im a grocery cashier ...68 yrs young... Believe me, there are lots of lonely people out there....sometimes they're rude behavior is due to the loneliness... A kind response can change their attitude and demeanor...Its the little things that make a huge difference.

It gives a warm glow in the heart and radiates out to the whole body if someone smiles kindly. This story shows how a simple smile melted the senior man's heart who was bitter while was shopping all alone at the supermarket. The little girl intuitively "felt the need" to befriend "the old man" because she likes "old people" and this grumpy, sad old man is shopping alone.
That"s how the friendship started. I first watched the whole video about this three years back.

This reminds me of my old neighbor, she died a month shy of her 102nd birthday, but for years I would walk across and visit, sometimes have afternoon tea with her and her care taker. We moved into our house when I was 3 and apparently she had been considering moving into a nursing home before we moved in. But my family made Christmas presents for our neighbors, stopped by and visited on Halloween, and probably when I was about 4 or 5 was when my mom let me cross the street to go and visit just about whenever I wanted (as long as I asked/told her where I was going. Also important to note that I’m from a very small village and live on a dead end road. I knew to watch out for cars but there were also barely any cars to watch out for on our street. Usually it was just our other neighbor who also enjoyed having us next door. I remember there were several times we couldn’t get helium tanks open for my birthdays so my mom would have me go next door and ask if he could, and he’d always bring it to his work shed and get it open with a wrench)
This is wonderful. She will always remember him. Now that he is with his wife he'll have a wonderful story to tell her.

Oh no.... I feared this day would eventually come. I know that poor girl is heartbroken.
She will be OK. Dan and his wife are watching over her and she has special favor with God b/c she was such a blessing to him.
