Watch as an xterra drive shaft carrier center support bearing goes bad!

  • UPDATE:
    Got it fixed. $27 part off ebay. Needed 14mm to Remove the housing. 8mm to remove the U joints, which were fine. Removed the drive shaft from the Transmission. 24mm (15/16 I think) to remove the bolt that holds the wrist of the U joint/driveshaft. Put the shaft in a vice and tapped it off then tapped the bearing out. Used a pipe to tap the new bushing/bearing back in and re-bolted it all back together. Not a bad job. Took 2 hours, and I was going slow and being VERY careful since I've never done it before.
    2003 nissan xterra 2.4L 2 WD Noise sounded like a bad bearing or bad brakes. also called driveshaft support bearing or bushing. the truck used to only vibrate over 60mph, now it vibrates randomly. there was a squeaking sound like worn brakes for the longest that I couldn't pin down. Here is a linkk to my forum discussion:

    I can only imagine what it feels like in the car. After replacing the flex disks in my W211 merc, I didn't order the center support because I thought it looked ok. Yeah... It vibrates at around 100km/h and it drives me insane. This video shows absolutely perfectly the issue at hand. Thanks!

    Adam,
    I know this is an video. Maybe you’re aware of this by now. Bad or failing u-joints will lead to an early demise of your carrier bearing. Always replace the u-joints when replacing the carrier bearing.
    Not only will cheap discount parts fail early. Bad, failing u-joints are the cause of early carrier bearing failure as well. Even if the u-joints feel fine. If they’ve as old as the factory carrier bearing at time of carrier bearing replacement. Don’t forget to replace the u-joints at the same time.
    Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

    I tried filming this on my truck. Fucking dangerous. Where did you hang on and how'd you hold the camera so still?

  • @AdamHeidingsfelder
    @AdamHeidingsfelder  Před 10 lety +2

    It's mostly in the video description. I thought it was a bad brake pad, then a wheel bearing for the longest time, and couldn't figure it out. I just bought the bearing, that's it. It was off ebay. I think they may have changed it since you have the newer body style, but I doubt it. go look under your truck. It was pretty simple. Careful with those U joints, and tapping the splined shaft away from the thing that holds the U joints. Good luck.

  • @zash008
    @zash008 Před 9 lety

    I've climbed under the truck a dozen times and I haven't seen anything wrong yet. The wheel bearings aren't leaking at the hub. The rear fluid isn't drawing down. The shaft support bearing appears normal looking and clean. I guess I do need to try a camera of sorts in the near future. It all started shortly after I changed the rear fluid just for good measure with royal purple at 110k. Since then I've tried Lucas Synthetic and Mobil1 Synthetic. But no difference. Your video comments make me believe it could be the support bearing.

    • @AdamHeidingsfelder
      @AdamHeidingsfelder  Před 9 lety +1

      It very well may be. I would say the easiest way to find out would be to simply remove the 2 nuts/bolts holding the carrier bearing to the cross beam and spinning it around the drive shaft. You wouldn't need to remove U joints or anything else. You may find a problem, if not just put the 2 nuts back on. Mine was a little challenging because the holes didn't seem to match up perfectly, and I had to pry a little on it(without messing up the threads). Hope this helps...

    OK BAD NEWS !! I was under the truck yesterday adjusting the torsion bars to make the suspension a little stiffer, and noticed the drive shaft had a little angle and some play in it, my 7 year old son looked into the rubber around it, and the cheap ebay rubber is torn and loose AGAIN!!! Maybe there is some trick I can use to not have to replace it again since the bearing is still good... we'll see. DAMN!

      Get some high grade weatherproof fast curing polyurethane in a tube and fill the gaps in the bearing in. Let it dry for 48hours. It should reinforce the rubber and hold the shaft

    Thank you, I went to belle tire to get a tire rotation and wheel alinement. They told me my center bushing is completely gone and I need to replace it. The thing is I never had any humming noises, thumping or howling. Wanted 1,900 for a new driveshaft. I said nope. Went to a Honda dealership and they just said I needed a wheel rotation and alignment. The problem was two weeks ago I hit something hard and my left wheel started humming and wheel was off centered. At the Honda dealership they did a few test drives and my driveshaft is fine. Belle tire at it again scamming

    When you were inside the car driving, did the bad carrier bearing sound like a growl when you were taking off from a stop?
    I have a 2012 Tacoma with a 5 speed manual. It has been making this weird grinding/growling sound as soon as I take my foot off the clutch and give it gas in 1st gear. I can feel a vibration.

    • @AdamHeidingsfelder
      @AdamHeidingsfelder  Před 9 lety +1

      Crockett85 no. It sounded like a screeching bearing. when the bearing wend bad, the drive shaft was loose inside the bushing thing, allowing it to vibrate. The vibration was completely random. See the video? It vibrates and then stops vibrating just as fast. It was not dependent on speed/rpm. Sounds like a throw out bearing, pressure plate or something else. I'm a chiropractor, not a mechanic. Sorry.

    • @AdamHeidingsfelder
      @AdamHeidingsfelder  Před 2 lety

      You can email me at adamh1281@gmail but it sounds like warped rotors. If you have a problem when you hit the brakes, its probly the brakes. Try putting it in neutral and coasting... Does it vibrate? If its only when you hit the brakes, it's not the drive shaft.

    • @AdamHeidingsfelder
      @AdamHeidingsfelder  Před 9 lety +6

      +Jesus Ambriz Not sure what that means. I'm assuming it would vibrate til the U-joints failed. The bearings in the transmission, and maybe the rear differential could be damaged too. I'm not a mechanic, I'm a Chiropractor.

    • @OM-jt9nk
      @OM-jt9nk Před 8 lety

      it can cause major damage to your transmission, ive even seen driveshafts that broke of the bearings and went round and round and broke the exhaust, rear diff etc.

    • @k4kendetta531
      @k4kendetta531 Před 5 lety

      Eventually more components will fail. Your drive shaft will smack the ground and there's a good possibility that you'll become a human catapult, or, it will just rip the entire rear end out from under you.

  • @zash008
    @zash008 Před 9 lety

    I have 2006 frontier. Been hearing a noise like bad brake but sounds like passenger rear wheel bearing from drivers seat. Changed rear end oil 4 times in 40k miles. Thinking that was the source. Bought new bearing kit but now don't think it's the issue. Only makes this sound when driving over 50mph. It doesn't make the noise when coasting or hard acceleration. Only when easy traveling over 50 mph. Is this what you had?

    • @AdamHeidingsfelder
      @AdamHeidingsfelder  Před 9 lety

      Yes, I do remember something similar. I think I recall at first it was intermittent, and at high speeds. The driveshaft is still moving when you are coasting, so it shouldn't matter. Although the drive system isn't under stress when coasting. Maybe get under the truck and look, feel for anything abnormal. maybe you see metal filings on some greasy spots, or a looseness in the carrier bearing, u joints, etc. or you could duck tape a small camera like I did.

      +alex delgado I would join a forum and post there. I'm sure someone has figured it out and posted their results.
