I can see this being big for Maserati… like, really big. Market placement and, as mentioned, the novelty of a brand new model in a segment of aging designs. Maybe this could be a turning point for the brand, and we could see them devoting more of their resources into the exotic market. Also interesting to see a pure ICE powertrain, where everyone else is going hybrid or full EV.

Doug you missed a very important feature: the Nettuno V6 is the first production gasoline engine to feature a prechamber ignition system, you know, like the one used in F1. This is a massive engineering trick to pull, getting a much quicker and more efficient combustion at higher rpms and making extra torque. The brand improvement you were talking about is actually pretty centered around this engine (which is a bargain if you dont care about the hybrid stuff and want to stay lighter) as it will be featured in all their top tier cars like we saw with the new granturismo trofeo and the SUV grecale trofeo

I’ll start by saying that my opinion may be slanted because I’ve been fortunate purchase and take delivery of an MC20 in the past several weeks. I’ve never been a Maserati guy, but was originally drawn to the MC20 by its styling, rarity and tech. Now that Maserati is part of the Stellantis Group, it’s no longer hampered and restricted in its performance by Ferrari. It can finally build a halo car that competes with what was always its big Italian brother. There is an elegance in its design simplicity that encompasses both the exterior and the interior. The lack of exterior vents and wings is refreshing in its design. The simple driver focused interior is free of distractions (save the climate control) and is swathed in leather, alcantara and carbon fiber. I’m extremely impressed with the build quality- remember this is a hand made car that the factory makes 5-7 MC20’s a day for the entire world. It has a carbon fiber monocoque which none of its competition can claim. And it’s Nettuno engine is packed with F1 tech- 620HP from a 3.0L 6 cylinder- currently the highest output per liter from any production car (Ferrari is about to eclipse that with he 296GGB). Additionally it’s very mild mannered, daily drivable until you push it when it really comes to life. Only time will tell about the reliability and resale. But in a sea of aging design Italian exotics, the completely new MC20 stands out from the rest.

This car is achingly beautiful, easily the best looking in this segment. However, Doug is dead on about the tarnished brand image, and I don't think $270k is enough of a discount to get someone to forgo a Ferrari for a car that shares the same brand as the Ghibli with Chrysler underpinnings on sale at the buy-here-pay-here lot.
For $175k well optioned, this could have been the start of something big for Maserati, but I'll be surprised if this leads to a revival of the brand at $50-100k more than that.

If I'm going to be completely honest, just from a looks standpoint alone, I would take this over a Ferrari 296 GTB any day of the week. That thing looks sleek but a bit soulless, like Ferrari is trying to get with the times. This car feels like Maserati is WITH the times. I've seen the MC20 in person and it's even more gorgeous than in pictures, and I say that as someone who has done nothing but dog on Masi since the first time I ever sat in a Ghibli.
It's a great showing from Maserati for sure but I also share your concerns. They're going to have to find a way to break the dreary Stellantis mold if they're going to continue to thrive with truly great cars. I just fear that for the same company that's badge engineering an Alfa Romeo into a Dodge, this may have just been a flash in the pan.

Minor features like wiper stalks and a few push buttons here and there? Sure. They are not core details in a car's interior. A steering wheel very much is. It's not like they were barely scraping this car together at an insane budget (like some supercars were made 20 years ago). They don't even offer an upgrade to the wheel, which many competitors do. The interior design team (and the people in charge of component use) clearly didn't put as much effort into the exterior team did.
