Jessica, you're in Detroit, as I am, so you know about the wedding atmosphere here. I'm going to one up you with two horror stories of my business partner/best friend:
1 - Back in the film days, my partner was shooting a wedding at a church that's currently closed on Woodward Avenue, near New Center. Just as he finished shooting the procession and was setting up for the Formals, he went to the back of the church where his camera bag was...BUT IT WASN'T!! Someone has stole all of his camera gear from the back of the church!
2 - Several years later, he was shooting another wedding. He was loading his car up to drive from the church to the reception hall. As he was starting to drive away, he noticed that something fell onto the ground as he drove over it. IT WAS HIS CAMERA BAG, with all of his gear in it. He had driven over his bag, crushing the contents... and this was the SECOND TIME that had occurred!
My partner has had a lot of bad luck with his camera gear over the years!

Recently did an outdoor Winter boudoir shoot, model had 10 VERY specific shots she wanted. That day the weather turned colder and worse than was expecting from 30 F and clear to 10f and white out blizzard.
After getting the shots as quickly as possible and getting home I found I had completely over-looked a specific prop and cutting half of it off in almost EVERY image but two.
Thank God I am well versed in Photoshop and when I delivered the images she had no idea the prop she wanted in the shots was all shopped in 😂

My horror story was shooting pictures of the local covid-vaccine clinic to be used for social media, flyers, and a billboard. Used a two camera setup and would let the unused one hang off my neck by the strap to quickly swap. At the end of the day, getting some amazing shots, I got home started to review and noticed a picture from one camera was pixelated to hell and back. Checked the next one, same thing. My heart sank as I looked at the ISO in lightroom and it was cranked up high. Apparently when the camera was around my neck, my shirt hit the touch screen on the back and cranked up the ISO to the max. Still had images from my main camera but everything from the b-camera were unusable.

  • @meroagogo

UGH.... I have gone to a shoot with all my gear, set everything up just to find I forgot all my batteries on the charger. It was a meet and greet for a Dallas Cowboy Football player and the timing was very limited. My heart dropped to my stomach. I called a photographer friend to see if they might be able to fill in for me but they were not. Luckily, she had another photographer friend who lived about 15 mins from where I was at so she called them to see if they could help. Not only did they have the battery I needed, they were home and ran it over to me. I had no idea this was happening as I was scrambling with the event planner to see if someone else had a camera on hand. Out of nowhere, this other photographer shows up as a legit angel on earth with a fresh battery. I could not believe it. The event planner was really cool and remarked on how professional I was given the circumstance and praised the PHX photography community for coming through. AMEN. I still have nightmares about this...

I'm a boudoir photographer and I use the spare bedroom in my apartment as my home studio. My apartment has a weird set up and you must walk through my bedroom in order to get to my only bathroom. I always make an effort to thoroughly clean my entire apartment before having a client over, but I had a really busy week with editing and worked a lot of hours at my day job before my last shoot, and I just ran out of time. I had enough time to clean everything except my bedroom and bathroom, so I just shut my bedroom door and prayed this wouldn't be one of the very few times a client would ask to use my bathroom. Well, she did ask, and my disgusting bedroom and bathroom were exposed. I'm not talking a sock here and there and an unmade bed... I'm talking about a tornado aftermath level situation. I was so beyond embarrassed, but I will never ever just hope for the best again lol. And hopefully one day I will have an actual studio so I can stop cleaning my house. Just kidding... a little! haha

I'm not the photographer, but a witness to this tragedy. I was up high taking video of a juniors roller derby tournament, so I had a great view of the sports photographer who was hanging out in the middle of the derby track getting closeup action shots of the skaters. I watched in horror as a jammer jumped the apex and (very accidentally) slammed right into the photographer, who watched helplessly as camera and lens flew out of his hands and crashed to the floor. I couldn't tell how much damage, but he quickly picked up camera and lens and hurriedly left the track. I never saw him back in the middle of the track for the rest of the tournament.

  • @LukeShalz

WELP I have a tragic one: one of my first gigs was shooting an old man and his 19 year old labrador who was on the verge of death. He wanted one last memory photographed with the pup. The shoot went great but... hehe... leave it to me to drop the memory card into a grate at the shoot location. I had to bike home (I don't know why I rode a bike that day to a shoot... don't ask) and I somehow forgot about the whole thing. I was an idiot then. Well... the next week the guy calls me asking about the photos because his dog died the night before. I panicked, made up some story about how I was still editing them and loaded my car with a ladder, a crowbar, and gloves. Would you know it? I found the card! Delivered the photos that evening.

I didn´t think anything of it, since I had one extra battery and charger in my suitcase. Well guess what :D we arrived at our hostel in France and I went straight into my suitcase for the battery and charger- they weren´t there, because my dad took them, because he thought that I wasn´t going to bring my camera all the way to England and he wanted to use it while I was gone...
For his defence, we split the money needed to buy that camera years before, whn we both wanted a camera, but I didn´t have enough money and he didn´t want to spend a lot of money (stupid idea I know, luckily now I have my own camera)

My horror story is very mild in comparison and has a happy ending. I never take my cards out of my camera, but for some reason I had removed the cards to upload this time. I had a booking at 1pm (very bright sun) and arrived on location, took the camera out, only to realize that I had no cards. There was only one thing to do. I told the client about my mistake and offered to go for the cards and return within the hour, or, if they preferred, do the shoot later in the day. They opted for the latter and got some great sunset shots. All's well that ends well, but I will stick to not removing the cards. 😅

There was one time I went to a photo shoot and there was a murder scene of some sort. I don’t actually know what happened, or if it was an actual murder scene. Here’s the scene: I walk into my shooting location in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The spot I was in has a large footbridge and a huge auto bridge that both span a river. There is a crowd of people all gathered in a circle. One guy is away from the crowd with his dog speaking to who I assume was the emergency dispatcher. He was describing the scene, saying, “Yeah, he’s laying down on the ground.” I didn’t want to stick around. But next thing I know, an ambulance and two police cars in the parking lot. I left very soon after. As I was leaving, I saw five more police and park ranger vehicles come flying into the location. If I had to guess, they were going about 55-60 mph down back roads. I don’t know what happened beyond what I saw, but this was not the average photo shoot.
