You showed me in that video that women can do things we may not think we can do. Not long after I started purchasing a power tool here and there and eventually made my own raised beds from the ground up. Bought a saw and cut the boards. Stained and sealed them. Assembled them with a little help from my sons. Then my husband decided to buy a really expensive fish, without telling me the cost (like 10x's the average) and just added it to the pond. Two days later we had a blue herring visit the pond & it chose this expensive fish to eat as it's appetiser 😂 Eventually my husband admitted how much he'd spent on it lol saying it was karma for not being truthful about it's cost 🤣 😂 He vowed never again to spend so much to feed a wild bird!!! 😂😂😂

It adds a rustic charm and provides another feature in your garden, just as your formal rose garden or the water feature provides. It has that unique rustic and secret garden effect, and the garden around the old gazebo provided. I'm sure your children will appreciate any 'secret' gardens. My little 7yr old granddaughter keeps asking me, "Have you made anymore secret gardens for me to play in?" Here at home we plant all our trees and shrubs high and never have had an issue. It's actually best for the tree so that the water runs away from the center of the root ball and towards the tips of the roots which is where trees take in the moisture and help with root growth.

Aloha from Oahu🤙🏽 your banded shark will absolutely get all of 4ft. and some change. But you'll hardly notice him, and he will do his part in keeping the pond clean. Your bottom dwellers play a critical part in tank and ponds and stir up crud that will be cycled out through skimmers. Also. Expect him to easily live 10 years. Also the tannins will, in fact, disappear, but it will take time. Us Aquascaping community usually soak our wood prior if that's not desired look. Leaves and other debris will also contribute to tannins in the water as well.

Maybe in the west side where nothing is growing you could put a fountain in the middle and seating, in the other swoops. That way it would still be peaceful, and you could enjoy sitting out there looking at the pretty flowers and listening to the sound of the fountain.

The pallet walkway served its purpose and to those folks who think it would not last, keep in mind they live in high desert. They get way less rainfall than the majority of the US. I live in a high desert area myself. My area like theirs do not get the wicked freeze thaw cycle like most other areas do.

I just had lunch with the director of our Extension Service and Master Gardener and we happened to be talking about trees and the fact that they need to be planted high because they will take in a lot of water from surface roots. I think you did good especially given the wood chips coming that will eventually degrade to soil.

I was surprised to hear the high fin shark was able to grow so big. The thing is about a lot of fish is, the size they obtain is often determined by the environment they are in. That is, if they are in a huge body of water, they may grow to their maximum potential size. If they are in a smaller space, they tend to stay smaller. It will be interesting to see what happens.

If you add compost to the planting hole, the trees will sink a bit. Organic matter, like rich compost, will constantly decompose unlike your topsoil. It is recommended to never add amendments when planting trees so they can adapt to your native soil. But I do the same thing and it works, so carry on.

    Laura, Aaron,
You don't want an actual "stock tank" heater for the pond--they're designed to heat the full amount of water in a tank & so have massive wattage. What ya'all need is a pond floating saucer-style heater. They are designed w/ enough wattage to keep a hole in the ice so that gas can exchange can occur, perhaps 50-200 watts. Big difference between the 2 heater designs/wattage. Additionally, most saucer heaters have the added benefit of an automatic on/off based on water temperature--on when the water drops to 45° Fahrenheit & below, off when above. My personal favorite is Farm Innovators Model PF-200 Pond Deliver (other companies make this style, too). This model is designed to be less likely to tip should it be hit w/ a heavy snow.
BTW, be patient--the tannins coming from the stump will eventually finish leeching out & your water will then be crystal clear. It just needs time...a fair amount of it.
Hope this helps! Happy pond keeping. 😊

Maybe attaching some 'invisible' fishing line where the water drops so the water can follow it like it does a rain chain.. maybe that would help stop the splashing. I've seen small waterfoutains use a clear pipe/tube and you can't see the pipe/tube once the water is running. thinking of the faux watering can, or spigot fountain that looks like it is continuously pouring water out. Sometimes we have to rig stuff up to make it work. Some company out there has a idea to fix a problem, we can figure it out too. As far as Aaron's idea of planting flowers in the rock under the fountain, You don't need to dirt to grow plants in water.. It's called Aquaponics.. They even sell kits to do that... think outside the box Laura..There is a 'Garden Answer' for the fountain problem.. =D

Aaron’s comment about the rocks in the Midwest was true. They do continue to come to the surface just not everywhere. We have them here but go 25 miles and they are nonexistent. However, it’s really just tilled fields that have it. I have none come up in my gardens. A good reason to go no till.
