Free Bird might be one of the best live jams ever, 3 guitars, bass, drums and piano all going batshit crazy perfectly playing off each other.
I'm a black guy who grew up with a varied eclectic taste in music from Calypso, Soca, Reggae, Hip Hop, Rock/Heavy Metal/Alternative, R&B, Classical, some pop etc....but even though this song was before my time, I have always rated this song as among the top 3 best songs in the history of humankind alongside music gems such as Beethoven's 'Symphony #9 - Ode To Joy', The Beatles "Hey, Jude", Suzanne Vega's "Luca", Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry", Nivana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child Of Mine" and "November Rain", Tupac Shakur''s "Dear, Mama", Biggie Smalls "Warning", Janet Jackson's "Rythm Nation", Michael Jackson's "Thriller", Supercat and Nocodemus's "Cabin Stabbin" and so much more on my personal list. Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" is a masterpiece of what human culture has produced in music. An absolute masterpiece.

But the ones I mentioned, IMHO are among the top 10 greatest of all time in throughout ALL genres of music. And I haven;t even named any of Mozart's compositions as yet...or any modern classical music by John Williams and Alan Silvestri.
I was at this concert at the Oakland Coliseum July 2, 1977. It was one of a series of summer concerts there every year called "Day on the Green", organized and promoted by Bill Graham, a legendary promoter who was responsible for most concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area in those days. Graham brought all the great bands to the Bay Area. Every week of the year some top band was playing somewhere in the area. Ticket prices ranged from about $6-$12. This day there were 4 bands, with The Outlaws opening the show, followed by Santana, then Lynyrd Skynyrd, and finally Peter Frampton.

Every time I see someone react to this version, the wonderment in their smile at the incredible musicianship shows up. I came to realize that in 20 years (if we’re still here) another generation will see this footage that is part of Southern Rock history…& get the same smile as our beautiful hostess. 🤘😎

Band took the name from a gym teacher that used to give them a hard time for having long hair. His name was Leonard Skinner. This concert is about two months before a plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer), guitarist Steve Gaines (white shirt, red pants) and sister Cassie Gaines (backing singer).
Also road manager and 2 pilots.
Oh the good old days. I was 20 when I went to that concert. They were just one of four bands that played that day. Santana, Peter Frampton and The Outlaws were the others. They all played a second concert at the same place on July 4th.
The whistle sound is made by the glass slide for slide guitar.
Played on the 12th fret harmonic. The fret wire under the strings at the 2nd fret helped it ring out.
Played by Gary Rossington as a tribute to Duane Allman.
The girls were not wearing their bras. It is casual wear called halter tops...very popular at the time. There are no words in the song after the "bird" flys away and when you listen the guitars sound like a bird flying flapping it's wings faster and faster as it soars into the sky and joins a flock.
With that accent you can say it however you want.😀
Pronounced "Lehnerd-skinherd" somehow is the album name where is featured this song, I gess is from 1973. A stunning live performance of any band, the atmpsphere, the vibe, perfromance, the crowd, everything!!!. The style is Southern Rock. Nice reaction.

I'll be 60 in September, and I've been listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd almost my entire life. All of my favorite memories of my youth include Lynyrd Skynyrd playing in the background. I've had 2 amazing dogs named Skynyrd, and my newest 5 month old pup is named Lynyrd. In America's Deep South where I grew up, Lynyrd Skynyrd members are gods.

Growing up in the 70s in Virginia, you were gonna hear this at every school dance. Starts out a slow dance and turns in to a fast dance party!
Southern Rock rocks. The Allman Brothers, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet are a good place to start going down the Southern Rock rabbit hole.

Just for your own enjoyment, please view this band's rendition of this same song from Knebworth, England (in 1976 I believe). The guitar solo was a longer version and Collins was really rocking that day! Some of the background on why the bank went out on the Rolling Stone's tongue stage is also of not.
IMHO the extended piano break in this live version really deepens the underlying melancholy of the track in a way that the studio track does not.
The piano amazes me in that it can be heard, and its presence contributes, all the way to the very end of the very loud denouement and coda. Great sound engineering and equipment.

Yes Inna you should have been there at this concert. You had the same energy as the crowd. This is how we had fun in the 1970's no phones to distract us, no sun tan lotion for most of us. Glad you chose this version it caught the spirit of the crowd and you could see the band better in the sunlight than the live 1976 concert which sounded great but it was getting dark so you couldn't see as well. Only thing I'd change in this footage is to show more of the guitar solo. Oh and that was a rattlesnake skin around his hat. I grew up with plenty of rattlesnakes around my hometown of Medicine Hat.
when i was 9 or so, I'd see my dad on weekends. We'd go over to Rons house so I could play with his kids and Dad would smoke weed and listen to music with Ron. When Skynard played we all enjoyed it, but when Freebird played...it was madness. thanks for bringing a tear to an old man.

An amazing band that lineup left us too soon due to a plane crash taking the singer, a guitarist the guitarist singer and backup singer. I think the crash was shortly after this performance. They were one of the biggest bands in the 1970s and at their peak when the plane crash happened. Their other big hit is Sweet Home Alabama but they have so many great songs. Tuesday's Gone, Saturday Night Special, Gimme Back My Bullets, Gimme Three Steps, T For Texas, The Ballad of Curtis Loew. They were a Southern Rock band originally from Jacksonville, Florida if I am not mistaken.
I was in High School in Atlanta at that time. Being from the South we all had Lynyrd Skynyrd 8 track tapes. Those were the days when no one was bothered by cell phones and crowds were safer to be in. Don't miss "Sweet Home Alabama".

Back in the day going to shows like this was a common occurrence for many of us. I was actually in that biz and practically lived at shows, many, many just like this. Unfortunately the plane crash happened before I got a chance to work with them. I did get to do a Rossington Collins Band show latter. They played Free Bird with no vocals as a tribute to those who went before them.
This is from the days when I went to a lot of concerts. (I graduated high school in 1979) It was held at a baseball stadium. The event was part of an annual series of shows called Day On The Green where a LOT of big names performers came and played.
And the name is pronounced as LIN-erd SKIN-erd

Not bad for some poor boys from Jacksonville Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd was different. Great group of musicians and the perfect voice for their music. Legendary band that always wanted their live sound to sound like the studio versions. Unfortunately the band met with a tragic end.

Lynard Skynard is one of a few very popular "Southern Rock" bands. This particular performance is a bit comical in the "Confederate" stage set. You recognized the Mount Rushmore image, but probably didn't notice that only the two "Southerners", George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were included. It's my understanding that the band was not aware of what the stage set would be before the concert. Another "southern Rock" favorite is the Allman Brothers band.
This is the best performance of "Freebird". It really shows how great each member really was. Shows off Billy Powell's classical piano training and how the "3 Guitar Army" of Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Steve Gaines can jam together as one entity, and don't forget Leon Wilkeson on bass. And driving everything is Artimus Pyle on drums. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant was at the top of his game and never sounded better. Even the back-up singers, JoJo Billingsly, Leslie Hawkins, and Cassie Gaines are just amazing. They are all gone now except for Artimus who is still rockin' out with his own band and playing many of Skynyrd's old standards in tribute to his fallen brethren.
Artimus rarely gets the credit he deserves. Don't understand why. He's still Rockin Strong!

Lynyrd Skynyrd was from the deep South - Jacksonville, Florida and they championed the 'Southern rock' sound which mixed country w/ rock music, debuting in 1973... They were also famous for their 3-guitar line-up that made them a live attraction on tour. The band named themselves after a high school teacher that they actually hated - Leonard Skinner 😂
Tragically, none of the original members are alive today and Lynyrd Skynyrd will be remembered for the tragic 1977 plane crash that killed their lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, one guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines, one of their backing singers... (They were in this clip) The other members seen here were - Allen Collins (guitar), Gary Rossington (slide guitar), Billy Powell (piano), Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Artimus Pyle (drums)... Only Artimus Pyle (ex-drummer) is alive today after surviving the plane crash. The others passed away in the years afterwards... Original members Bob Burns (drums) and Ed King (guitar) passed away and Gary Rossington, the last original member, passed away recently.

In 1987, an agreement was reached w/ Ronnie Van Zant's widow Judy (who owns the rights to the name Lynyrd Skynyrd) to reunite the band only if 3 original members r in the band to tour and record new music ... Ronnie's younger brother Johnny Van Zant joined as the new singer of Lynyrd Skynrd til today... Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Ed King and Artimus Pyle were all involved (Guitarist Allen Collins was paralyzed in a car accident and passed away in 1990)
However, more members left the band or passed away... but Lynyrd Skynyrd was still in demand because of their legacy of music, so new members were brought in to tour... Guitarist Gary Rossington passed away in 2023, being the only original member left alive til then and he had kept Lynyrd Skynyrd active. The band plans to continue touring w/ singer Johnny Van Zant, guitarist Ricky Medlocke and others.

That is the perfect example of kick-ass, southern rock and roll. Not my favorite song by them but it is my favorite video of them in concert. The energy is draining.

I saw a concert poster several years ago about this show. It took place during the Fourth of July weekend. There were three other acts booked for that same weekend: Peter Frampton, Santana and The Outlaws...and I would've loved to have been there. 😊
I was lucky enough to be there! All 4 bands were great that day, although the crowd favorite was Lynyrd Skynyrd, who had 2nd billing behind Peter Frampton. See my other comment to read more about the show.
Check out any of the songs off Charlie Daniels band fire on the mountain album... Charlie had long hair and played southern rock back then.. especially the "South's gonna do it again" a song about all of the bands that are playing southern rock down south... Grinder switch.. Marshall Tucker band.. Lynyrd Skynyrd The Allman Brothers.. wet Willie.. Elvin Bishop group.. ZZ top... Jerry Reed and of course CDB. Ol ''Charley Daniels band.
That's the "chirpy bird" sound you can produce while playing guitar with a slide. I believe it was pioneered by Duane Allman, and became a staple. Because it's fun to do!
fun fact: Gary replaced the b string on this SG with a second g string- just for the slide part in this song. That way, he could cock the slide a bit, and get that signature sound you hear in the slide parts. If you'd seen them before, you knew what was coming when you saw Gary pick up that red guitar, lol. He normally played a Les Paul.
If you like this, check them out in 1976 at Knebworth Faire, in England. Opening for the Rolling Stones in front of a crowd of 350,000 or so people. They were on FIRE. I'd recommend their covers of Gimme a T for Texas, (If you want to see what Steve could do!) and/or Crossroads.
The title of their first album was "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd"
That concert was about 3 months before the plane crash… I seen them 3 times before that horrible day that some of them died. So any Lynyrd Skynyrd songs 1977 or earlier is from this band. There is a modern day Lynyrd Skynyrd band that the lead singer is the younger brother of the one that passed in the plane crash. He has been singing about 35 years and they are touring with ZZ Top and I just seen them a couple of weeks ago.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977. The concert that you played here was on my birthday in '77. I don't think that the stadium is staying there after this season. There is no longer a Pro Football, Basketball or Baseball team in Oakland after 2024. All of the professional teams moved to other cites. The football team is in Las Vegas now, and the Oakland Athletics' baseball team's lease ends after the 2024 season, which is where that concert was held. The baseball team applied to move to Las Vegas as well. I saw them play in Lexington, Kentucky in May of that same year. Three of those guys died in a plane crash in Mississippi in October of 1977, that same year. That haunted me for a couple of years afterward.
Unfortunately you (and 99% of the reactors I've seen) saw an edited version of the solo (in 12:57 the cut is very clear).. there's an even longer version of this that I highly recommend.
It IS a concert. 1977 at Oakland Stadium in Oakland, CA. I think Peter Frampton opened for them, Lynyrd Skynyrd (pronounced lenerd skinerd) free bird was their last song of the concert.
I was there, The Outlaws opened the show, followed by Santana, then Lynyrd Skynyrd, and finally Peter Frampton.
The bird sounds are Gary Rossington using some effects and a slide on his Gibson SG. No one did it better.

I got a chance to see a group called the Outlaws live - similar type of music. The energy from their live version of Green Grass and High Tides has a similar vibe. There is a live version "Outlaws - Green Grass And High Tides - 11/10/1978 - Capitol Theatre" that I would recommend checking out - but be warned, it's 23+ minutes!!! :)

A truly great epic song. Excellent musicianship. This was the summer after I graduated from college, and although I was not a huge fan, there's no question that this song is in a league of its own. I do have to question the Confederate flag at the back of the stage. That wouldn't be there today.

Their music is great and you should just ignore the negative people that have never understood the confederate flag and what it stands for as that has nothing to do with your reaction to the music. One of the greatest guitar jam sessions ever. Sadly, several of the band members were killed in a plane crash not long after this concert. The band did reform ten years later after the lead singer, Ronnie VanZant's little brother was convinced to take over as the lead vocalist. They are still performing. Anyway, loved your reaction and I would suggest listening to "Sweet Home Alabama", "Tuesday's Gone", "Simple Man", "Ballad of Curtis Loew", "Gimme Back My Bullets" just to name a few that will give you the real flavor of the bands music. Love to see you rock out!!!
