Thanks a million! I'm sketching my German Shepherd Dog, Duke, for my son's birthday gift. Duke died, unexpectedly, 17 March 2021. Our hearts hurt, but this will be an easy way to transfer my sketch to canvas.

Three years ago I took my first painting class in college and while that gave me a bit of confidence to simply bring paintbrush to canvas, it left me to figure a lot of stuff out on my own lol. I've learned so much from your videos. From your explanation of primary colors, to your technique...I can't thank you enough for your content Debbie :) I've been painting hydrangeas nonstop lol and I LOVE IT....and that's a big thing for me...I usually hate most of my work 😅

I've been using the shading method since middle school when my art teacher showed it to me but the graphite paper will save me a ton of time

This is so much easier compared to what I did before. I tried to use a cutout piece of paper and paint over the edges, though some somehow got underneath still and ruined the piece. But this should help a lot more effectively.

.....is the base coat (white paint) applied before sketechening...after ....or we can directly start from our choice colour
You can sketch over any base color. I just did it on white so you could see it better on camera. :)

Thank you so much Debbie, for this very useful information. 😄 I paint on canvas a lot, and always draw on it and then it’s really hard to erase pencil marks from it. So I will try this method. But I had a question please. I noticed some dark marks from the graphite paper onto the canvas after you drew the smiley face. Any suggestion how to then erase those marks? Or would that just get covered with the paint when we start painting? Thanks so much.
Those extra marks will get covered with paint. ;)

I have a question! Can you use parchment paper instead of tracing paper? :)
I’m not sure if you can draw on top of parchment paper, but as long as it’s see through it and you can draw on it, give it a try!
I was thinking cqrbon copy but didnt know you could get those sheets

Are those both graphite paper the white and the black? I mean can I jst use my sketch book paper and then go out and buy that graphite black paper and transfer onto canvas?

You can use a pen or pencil or anything with a point. It doesn’t matter for the tracing part.

sneha attada charcoal pencil may not work as well, but test it out. I’ve actually never tried it. Although I don’t think that will erase as well as pencil. :/

Yes! As long as it’s not printed on photo paper. That would be too think and glossy yo transfer the graphite

I use graphite paper but leaves nasty little marks on if you use your hand and push hard enough while just resting while tracing
What if it's a larger canvas and I want to draw a life size human?
The same technique applies to any sized canvas. If you have a drawing that you want to transfer, just use several pieces of graphite paper behind your original drawing.

Can you reuse graphite paper or carbon paper?
Yes! You can! I’ve had sheets last me for years!
What type of pencil should be used?
Black paper name?
I have been using white chalk to rub on the back of the design and trace it to the canvas. For better contrast, use a different color of chalk. The chalk dissolves with a damp Qtip. I am not sure how to remove the black graphite on the canvas. Please advice me on that. Thanks.
Elvira Berry that is a great idea. I use a kneaded eraser on top of the graphite to get off as much as possible. I also paint with a lot of layers so the graphite does cover with paint. If your layers of paint are too thin and watered down, the graphite may show through with certain more transparent colors :/.
