Probably one of the best reviews I've seen from BIG name channels and smaller ones like this. Bravo bro, keep it pushin.
Thank you my man 🙏 out here trying to make the best videos I can!!
Excellent video, for me the best on this class. Keep the good work Nathan! 😉👍🏼
Very informative and on point with real-world example! Thank you very much! Quality is top tier
Thank you for the awesome comment! I’m glad I was able to make a quality video for you! Plenty more coming 😏🙏🏻
This was an incredibly useful and detailed video. I am in the same boat of coming from the iPad and considering the MBP for video editing, but daunted by the higher prices tags before me. I am truly thankful you’ve shared your experiences, apps used and process as it helps paint the best picture of what I can expect and how to best optimize. I hope future viewers to this video and your channel are as educated as I was today.
I gotta thank you for taking the time to leave this really nice comment! I'm glad as I was able to help! I'm just a college student and I know how expensive these devices are, so it's good to see real experience using one of them before purchasing. Unfortunately, I'm already looking at one of the new M2 Pro Mac Minis since this has been giving me so much trouble! Thank you again, and I hope to see you around in future videos :)))
You finally convinced me to buy this after weeks of research. Thanks!
Awesome! So glad I was able to do this for you :)
This was really helpful. I really want to get the M2 Macbook Pro 2023 specced up with just the bigger 1TB HD but otherwise base version as I feel next year will be the big leap. This video showed me the workflows I need and that they worked on the Pro M1 and they should def work on the M2. Thank you.
Hey, I'm very happy it was helpful to you! :)
And I agree, the M3 chips with the 3nm structures is rumored to have huge leaps in power. If your device is managing then maybe waiting one more year might be the best idea!
Hope it all works out!
I've had troubles with my base M1 Pro 14" when editing and especially transitions. All reviews says that it is a beast for editing. Finally someone who actually points these very important issues out.
My Final Cut Pro also crashes pretty often when editing. Didn't run out of memory. Only me?
Yessir! While it is a fantastic laptop to video edit with, it's not perfect and does have its limits. And FCPX does have some bugs. Every once in a while it will completely crash on me but that isn't too often. What usually happens is it will freeze up, or the playback will stop working when I press the play button so I will have to restart FCPX myself to get it to work again, but it's not super often where I feel the need to switch editing softwares. And as for the memory, I don't get that error as much as I use to when I made this video, so I think just software updates solved it for me!
The Ram works together with the SSD so if the SSD is almost full the Ram will not always function.
That intro is 🔥
Thank you for demonstrating and discussing editing on a lower-spec M1 Pro. I’m trying to choose my next MacBook and most reviewers only talk about the high-spec models and imply that they are often overkill. It’s good to see the range of options in real-world situations.
You’re very welcome Joseph! When I was researching mine before I bought it I had the same questions and now since I’m potentially looking at the new M2 Pro Mac mini or Mac Studio, I’m also looking for similar videos to the one I just made 😂
I understand that the Max chip has a lot more capability in graphics but it’s a big price jump. It sounds from your perspective like an M2 Pro with 32GB of RAM in either 14 or 16 inch frame might be entirely usable for even limited 4k work.
I'm going to be completely honest, I don't know if it will completely handle multiple 4K clips at the same time. But it will do at least 20-30% better because of the additional neural engines which to me sounds like will make a noticeable difference. For my experience if you plan on working with 4K footage then 16 GB of RAM is not enough and you need at least 24 or 32 GB of RAM.
Such a high quality video! Impressive and nice transition into AURA! :)
Thank you! Worked really hard on this one!
How long can you edit videos when just using the battery? I am interested in these M chips for the portability they offer, the 17hours or so that Apple claims is surely for browsing internet or watching videos but it would be cool to know the numbers for video editing. Nice video btw !
What’s your thoughts on M3 pro. Looked online the M1 refurb is about half the price as the M3.
Hi Nathan, can I ask you which display settings you use for video editing and color correction?
I mean preset and frequency (proMotion, yes or not?).
Thank you
Thanks. Regards
You know what's interesting, yesterday I saw your video, and today I found someone have the similar issue, rendering the video at around 80 percent, then it doesn't work, that guy give a solution to export to prores 422, then use apple compressor to export to either H264 or H265, don't know if you still have this issue or not, but just to mention, hope it will work/or the best is you are all good with the machine now.
I had the same RAM problem with a specked out macstudio with 64gb ram but in resolve. I fixed it by disabling the render preview when rendering. I'm not familiar with FCP but if FCP previews the render as it goes then disabling it will fix your RAM problem. I think it's a weird bug that essentially makes the machine think it's caching that render onto the RAM. Hope it works!
Vlad
It might've been a software issue with whatever Venture version I had. The past 3 videos I have exported have been working fine which is weird as I didn't change any settings. But my background render has been turned off for a while! Thank you for your insight though. I'll update everyone if the software version seemed to be the issue!
Im thinking about getting this as a side computer since I do all my heavy editing on my gaming desktop. Although the price is good for the M1 now and I certainly need a portable option since some of my work requires me to do it on the run . Nevertheless, I certainly will use my desktop for the long hours of work and heavy duty.
If proxy is the only way, then my current 5 year old laptop with i5 u processor is handling 4K very well.🎉😊
Hi bro, I have a choice between m1pro and m2pro, according to most opinions, people say that it makes no sense to overpay for m2, provided that the mac requires 4k 30 fps video editing. Tell me, did you manage to solve this problem, or is it still a flaw in the m1 pro?
Hey! Referring to your problem with export. What OS do you have? Just update to Ventura, this must help.
Hey, yes I am updated to the latest version of MacOS Ventura! I'm still not sure what the problem is though. I hope it resolves itself since it seems like 16 should be enough RAM!
hi, is the mac pro m1 with upgraded ram and ssd having the same issues?
In my agency I had these problems with the base macbook pro 14 m1 pro. Problems that fortunately I no longer have with the macbook pro 14 m2 pro base (16 gb ram, 512 ssd) that I bought
Glad to know I’m not the only one 😂
Can I use Mac book pro 2014 , 16gb ram , i7 , 128ssd , 15 inches for video editing on premium pro and after effect?
At this given time, I edit with 1080p 60fps files, I am looking into getting this specific macbook with 16GB RAM, do you feel I will encounter those annoying errors and if I do what I can do to export the video? Thanks for this video, really helps
If you plan on staying with 1080p footage for years to come and don't plan on upgrading to 4K footage then the 16GB of RAM will be more than enough for you! So far (knock on wood) I have been able to export my videos after a few times of dealing with that RAM error with all 4K footage and long videos. So 1080p should work perfectly fine and not give you any export troubles!
@@NathanLemoine Thank you for that Nathan, see I'd love to work with 4k, but most of the footage coming my way is 1080p anyway, it's good to know though it's sufficient even for 4k footage with minimal errors. All the best ♥️
Thanks @NathanLemonine! I guess I should look into the 32GB model. That was super helpful!

For the same price what other laptop out there are better then theis one?
A customer I met at an apple store ranted how much he hated the Apple Macbook. I don't know if he was editing video. But he railed against it upon meeting him.
I mean unless he was using Premier Pro instead of FCPX which is optimized for video editing, idk why he did that 😂 Mine has been pretty dang great so far!
I was exporting 4K/60 on a 2019 iMac with 40 GByte of RAM using iMovie and received the same memory warning. I killed a few apps to allow the rendering to complete.
That seems to help for a few minutes but I usually keep getting the error message back. It takes for me to force quit out of FCPX and even restarting my laptop to finish the export :/
“What’s up lemons, it’s ya boy”
Who dis? 🥸
I guess you miggt want to set a limit on using your ram for render
same chipset in my iPad pro
not the same your ipad probably has an m1 chip and this has an m1 pro
This is ram 8 or 16?
Idk understand 16gb when I see people doing crazy stuff with 8gb and exports. Maybe it’s a software glitch?
I'm not sure, it might be. I've already had a 2 hour phone call with Apple in the past about it and no solution. Maybe an update to FCPX will resolve it.
How good is the 14” MBP - M2 Pro - 19c GPU - 32gb - 1TB for pro video editors ?
To be honest, I don't know as I don't have the M2 Pro and cannot test it out. But from the M1 Pro and my own experience, The M2 Pro has 3 more neural engine cores which are specific for photo and video rendering. I think that will definitely be noticeable especially when working with multiple streams of 4K footage and more demanding effects. Besides that, the 32 GB of RAM will be plenty and will future proof you for years to come! I also recommend getting external hard drives because video and FCPX libraries eat up storage and you will use up that 1TB pretty quick. Save some money, get the 512 GB version and buy a 2TB SSD.
Better solution: Don't color grade, just know how to use your camera
You Clearly don’t know anything about professional video editing or professional filming.
@@ELRAFAGIANTX I know why color grading is needed.
Lee Zavitz here shows his timeline with several 8k(!) videos and the playback is smooth czcams.com/video/2wTMxzqRIrs/video.html&t
How's that you have these lags and he does not?😬
I just checked out the video and I don't know why mines not working like his 😭 Maybe 4 streaks of 4K footage takes more processing power than one streak of 8K footage. It should be because his was day one while mine is now 7-8 month of consistent use so its degrading over time??
Thanks a lot, great review.
I am wondering between M1 Pro 8-14 16gb ram and 512GB and M1 Pro 10-16 16gb ram and 1T
The latter is 400€ more expensive
My goal is for everyday use, do some small video editing : cropping clips and creat a video out of cropped clips with simple transitions and music mostly in 1080p (potentially 4k but not sure)
Also to use rekordbox for DJing (preparing sets or organizing catalog)
Plus do some light ableton work with less than 50 tracks on to start in music creation exploration
I have a one drive cloud 1TB
I would recommend going for the lower storage and getting an external ssd instead. Because it is much cheaper.
i've heard macos swaps RAM with SSD memory to keep up with demanding tasks when RAM is not enough. this swapping slowly kills the SSD. it's also shocking how a mac optimized software like Final Cut Pro and macos can't optimize RAM well enough for cases like this. the reason why i'd never buy macbooks. such a high price only for the aesthetics.
How to you have rgb colored keyboard?
Do you mean on my MacBook Pro? I don't, it's just the regular white backlight. That would be cool if we can but unfortunately I do not
Can I buy a m2pro base variant 512 gb and 16 gb for 4k editing . Or I should buy a pc of i7 13 gen with rtx 3060 .
Plz suggest me
Hey I'm sorry I really do not know much about intel processors and other dedicated graphics cards. I want to say that video editing is more CPU intensive and less GPU, so the better your processor is, the easier it will be able to handle 4K footage, so the new M2 chips should be great for it!
Will this be enough as my main editing device device and an enough upgrade from mac mini m1 512gb 8gb ram?
I'm planning on editing 4k footages for maybe 2 to 3 minutes outputs for fashion film. Mostly my projects are less than 10 minutes
You are rich bro we are not 😂
