Leptastrea Coral Care Tips

  • Leptastrea are a relatively new species to the hobby and have never been a popular coral to the mainstream reef aquarist. They are a subtle short tentacled encrusting coral that appeal to veteran hobbyists that are looking for something different in their tanks. Novelty is a big thing when you have been in this hobby a long time and tanks start to suffer from sameness-syndrome. Sometimes a change of pace is necessary and uncommon corals like Leptastrea are just what the doctor ordered.

    I love my leptastria. My fully green one actually color morphed to have purple tentacles when I fragged it. The john deere one is also amazingly vibrant yellow in person

  • @AaronHendu

    I got an unknown leptastrea frag instead of the leptoseris I ordered...it mostly looks like an orange chunk of "fur"...it's tentacles are out so far and fluffy you can barely see the mouths during the day. It's not the prettiest thing, but there is some green tint the the tentacles and some purple surrounding the polyps when they are not extended. When I got it, it was just rolling around loose in a bag with no cup or anything...it looked like a chunk of poop, if I am honest. It looks much better now, has survived coral hell, and I actually enjoy it quite a bit. Mine likes direct light, though. It would take hours to puff up in the morning in the shadowy parts of my tank...got it in direct light and it has puffed and colored up ever since. You could see the polyps not opening on the half of the frag that didn't get any direct light so I just moved the whole thing there and it's been doing great ever since! I think you could probably run it over with a car, put it back in my tank, and it would quickly come back.

    Think it's possible to do a little leptastrea garden, kind of like how people do with Zoas? Or would they fight/grow over each other and make it impossible?

  • @2meniacal
    @2meniacal Před 2 lety

    Mine came on a tiny boulder. More like your basic roundish stone you would find outside. Does the coral only encrust? Or does the coral that came on the frag grow bigger itself as well as encrust? I swear mine is bigger but it is not yet on the rocks that it is on

    As for lighting, you're website says something completely different....
    " Moderate to high lighting is recommended. Leptastrea seem to do best under bright lighting"
    So which is correct....?
