      Nowadays, you can easily tell someone that you were the voice of this character, whether it be a cute character or an adult character. But back then, in the 70's. . . it was REALLY difficult for Donnie Dunagan to say anything, because he didn't want to be called Maj. Bambi.
      I get that he didn't want to reveal it because he didn't want to be teased, but the fact that he couldn't tell ANY of his close friends, nor his OWN WIFE, that he was the original voice of Young Bambi. . . Even AFTER he got out of the Marine Corps, he STILL kept it as a secret.
      Like I said, nowadays you can easily tell someone that you are/were the voice of a Disney character, but in his case. . . It was really difficult for him.
      Imagine not having the courage to tell ANYONE that you were the voice of a certain character, for SO MANY YEARS. He had to force himself to keep it a secret, and not tell anyone.

      @@scotttrail522 Ueah. It’s why I feel bad for the kid who played young Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace. He was bullied mercilessly by other kids in his school for it and even his own friends bullied him. But it didn’t stop in school, he was bullied by Star Wars haters everywhere he went and as a result his life fell apart and he ended up getting arrested. Also his younger sister died in her sleep which only added more damage to his psyche. This guy did the right thing keeping being the voice of Bambi to himself

    • @TheZamaron
      @TheZamaron Před rokem +2

      @@thedragonskull1065 I feel bad for Jake Lloyd, poor kid, I get if someone didn't like kid Anakin, but for crying out load he's just a kid, most child actors aren't the best as they haven't had years of doing it. It's not like they could just have a dwarf do it, those guys often despite being short like a child have the face of an adult. Besides I love Jake's portrayal, he makes Anakin this sweet endearing kid that when you first watch makes it a little painful when you remember "Oh shit, this sweet little kid is going to grow up into the evil and terrifying Darth Vader." I was actually invested from that point on, to see how a bright eyed kid like him could become Vader, and I wasn't disappointed, Hayden then continued the character and despite the cringe dialogue Hayden actually does a good job, adult Ani is supposed to be a little unnerving, his awkward moments actually make yiu think something's wrong with him, and when you see the confusing conditions of his upbringing as a Jedi it makes sense why he fell to the Dark Side. Poor Jake, didn't deserve the harassment.

      Except the villain? Man is the villain, every time that dreaded theme plays you get chills, you know something really bad is bound to happen sooner or later.
      The build up for man was brilliant in this movie.

    • @mhasemore
      @mhasemore Před 7 lety +3

      The villain - man being US. Every time that dreaded theme plays I feel disgusted with myself for being human; because I know innocent animals will die for no given reason. That humans are capable of murdering animals for no reason except they can; burning down a forest because they couldn't care less, and causing all this destruction without any reason or motivation? This made me feel ashamed and only accelerated my depressed feelings in childhood. I heard the book did it far better; the movie did the villain terribly, as it told me to be ashamed because I was human. Brilliant villain, indeed.

    • @123leyang321
      @123leyang321 Před 7 lety

      Matthew Hasemore
      You have to understand that this movie told the story from the point of view of the animals.
      What do you figure those animals would think of us after hearing the gunshots and the forest fire? That we are mindless murderers, of course.
      They'd not get that we could be hunting to feed our family since they don't eat meat and the forest fire was an accident (the way it was shown in the movie).
      So, yeah, if you don't keep this in mind, you'll think the movie is picturing humans as monsters from an universal point of view, which is NOT the case.

I didn't realize when I was older that his mom was shot or that that pheasant or partridge or whatever was killed either. I was like 4 years old when I first watched it so I didn't get what was going on. I still think the fire scene is pretty intense but beautiful.

  • @123leyang321
    @123leyang321 Před 7 lety +27

    Oh, yeah, this one I truly agree with. I always felt disappointed few people remember Bambi for the second part of the film (explains why the sequel is about him as a fawn, so it's a midquel, and almost any media about him is of him as a fawn).
    Adult Bambi was Bambi at his finest moments, he was a total boss, few male Disney heroes ever came close to being as heroic as he was.
    The scene of the bird taking off always felt much more intense than Bambi's mother dying.
    And the musical score, it's the most spectacular thing ever, it knows how to convey the atmosphere brilliantly, specially building up the tension when man is about to "appear". That tune always gives me chills.

      +MrBroken030 Little Foot's mom's death is heart-wrenching. But that was in the 80s. And Mufassa died in the 90s. I think the reason Bambi has such a reputation though is that it's really the first. People at the time weren't expecting it. It was 1942. There had hardly even been any Disney animated movies yet at all.

    • @ToonReel001

      I think it's that Land Before Time is more character driven, it's more humans in dinosaur suits and so we connect with their emotions more. Same for The Lion King. Bambi was more about ambience and swift nature. It creates more atmosphere and wistfulness than relatability. Bambi II on the other hand comes back and plays the feels for all they're worth.

    I will say, the death scene for Bambi's mom didn't affect me as much as the death scene for the pheasant. The sheer distress in the situation and the one pheasant that is clearly more affected than the others, gradually getting more and more desperate, finally cracking and giving a spine chilling shout. The music builds up, a momentary silence, only to be interrupted by a deafening gunshot. The corpse falls and the wildlife scatters.
    That scene still shakes me to my core.

  • @sweetasbloodredjam
    @sweetasbloodredjam Před 8 lety +7

    I don't know how it was for others, but I watched Bambi first as a very small child. I must have been about three or under, and for me, the thought of Bambis Mother dying was horrorfying. Especially because the Dad basically wasn't even there.
    With me, that fear of having to survive all alone in a sometimes brutal and hostile world resonated strongly, even at an early age.
    So yes, I WAS also sad because she was his mother, his caretaker and teacher, the only one he had that would make sure he would learn to survive.
    Maybe the idea of how essential a parent is to ones survival is somehing people forget as they get older, but I remember feeling very accurately how helpless I would have been in a situation like that without my parents and it scared me for that reason.

I love the cuteness of the animals or furries that you want to see (of course, that twitter pated..whatever is a bit too eroticism...don't judge me you furries). I love the designs of the forest between the seasons and smoothly colorful fields. And yes, the death of Bambi's mother death is pretty touchy and makes us scare into a dark cruel and that hunting part is a very tense scene that makes me scare of shooting poor animals including that bird scene. I won't lie, I wasn't affected by the deaths of Bambi's mom OR Mufasa as a kid. I have a very strange relationship with the deaths of those close to me, and the emotional impact didn't really hit me properly until I rewatched those films and others like them in my adult years. What DID screw me up as a kid, however, were the scenes of the hunting dogs. I am STILL scared of dogs to this day because of this goddamn movie, and I'm still paranoid at night that I'm going to get mauled (even though I've never been bitten by a dog before).
    I know that most dogs are nice and sweet and friendly, but even so I'm still uneasy around them even as an adult. Still, now that I watch this movie as an adult, I agree that it's absolutely gorgeous. I'm trying to desensitize myself to this stuff as well, but I really do enjoy just how beautiful this film is at this point in my life. Definitely a good one, and one that clearly has a lot of passion poured into it.

      It would also take a really long time after this that Disney showed direct death in their animated movies:
      - Cinderella's dad? Well, he was only mentioned to pass away.
      - Trusty in "Lady in the Tramp"? No, he was just badly hurt
      - Chief in "The Fox in the Hound"? No, he was also just badly hurt, and Todd's mother in the same film was only mentioned to be dead.
      - Gurgi in "The Black Cauldron"? No, he turns out to be alive.
      - Oliver in "Oliver and Company"? No, he turns out to be alive
      I don't think the other Disney films between Bambi and The Lion King even had deaths involved or implied. At least Don Bluth had the guts to show direct death in "The Land Before Time"

    Honestly I even thought the sequel was pretty good. It starts right off after Bambi’s mother was killed and the Prince of the Woods (Bambi’s Father) takes him in. Patrick Stewart as the father was good and it rather does a great job in drawing out his character. Yes, he may seem cold and stern, especially to little Bambi, but deep down he really does care for his son and he does love him, he just doesn’t know how to properly express it.
    I also love how in the first one, some people would fall into the pretext that the father is just neglectful or doesn’t want to grow attached to his child. But you can see that he saves him three times throughout the movie.

      ...what? I understand that people have different definitions of that phrase, but I was trying to clarify that perhaps he meant childhood into adulthood. Becoming a real boy was something bestowed upon Pinocchio when the fairy saw him be a martyr. Your interpretation might say that he comes of age at that moment, but generally, boyhood was just an endgoal he had over the course of the movie, and doesn't explicitly mean adulthood or growing up.

    "There's really on point in hiding it. We ALL know what happened to Bambi's mom in this movie, and it messed up so many kids for life."
    No doubt about that. . . Out of EVERY Disney Death in history, from the 40's all the way to right now, the ONE Disney Death that EVERYONE talks about . . . is Bambi's mother.
    "But let's be honest. It's not the death of the mother that gets us, it's the fact that there was such a strong connection between her and the son. That's why it messes us up."
    They do that same thing in
    1: Kimba the White Lion, from 1966 (Kimba and his mother). But being the non-Disney character that she is, despite the fact that she was inspired by Bambi's mother (whom was never given a name), they ACTUALLY GAVE HER A NAME! Eliza.

    1:10 OMG I laughed at how he said this "Like most of the early Disney films it mixes bright and colorful with dark and....(Gunshot indicating Bambi's mom died) mommy killing." Disney was honestly kind of fucked up back then. Seriously what is with them marketing these films to kids and being family friendly and often a parent dies or the villain dies, or something hugely dark happens at some point. No it's mostly safe for kids, almost no one dies in new films unless they're a live remake or a bought IP. Sorry Disney but the older films are what most of us 90s and earlier kid grew up on, shows and movies that were fun to watch but also taught us how the world works. Dumbo is my favorite Disney movie even to this day, with Bambi as my twin's favorite. I'm just a little jealous his favorite got a 2nd film and mine didn't. But hey, at least I can relax knoing no mothers died in mine, mine only got chained up and locked away for most of the film just from protecting her kid. Jeez it's still kind of fucked up. The one thing i don't like about this movie is how the final act makes humans, and in particular, hunters, to look like bloodthirsty death machines who'll shoot anything that moves. I grew up in rural Wisconsin where hunting is a common thing, and i can assure that no hunter is gonna shoot some random bird during deer season. It almost feels like this movie was written by PETA. I read the original book in grade school, and that actually did a much better job realistically representing humans and hunters and their relationship with the wild. Hell, there was one scene in the book where one person actually helps one of the injured deer. I like the movie's early scenes with the wonders of nature, but i just hate the xenophobic third act. The book just does an overall better job representing the delicate relationship between man and beast.

      @Morgil27 Před 8 lety +22

      Valoo Dragon
      I'm gonna ignore that comment about the lion, and just state that here in rural Wisconsin, you eat what you kill. The local government gives you a license to shoot X number of deer, and when you reach that quota (which most people don't), you're done, lest you want a _very_ hefty fine. Then you take your deer to a local butcher and he processes the meat for you. You may also have the head mounted if you happened to get a nice buck, but mostly everyone does it for the meat. And if you've ever eaten venison, you'd understand that it's worth it.

    Me: Hi I'm Nathan I'm a pokemon trainer I'm here with my waifu and best friend Misty
    Misty: Hi
    Me: Now most people know about Bambi but what you don't know is that we were there too we'll tell you the whole story
    Misty: A year had passed since the events of Dumbo we were itching for another adventure so we looked into the book of Disney and found Bambi
    Me: The moment we found it a portal opened and we reluctantly jumped in without hesitation we found ourselves in a forest
    Misty: We could hear birds chirping and we saw forest animals of all kinds heading for a thicket one of the animals a bunny named Thumper told us a new prince was born
    Me: We went with Thumper to wake up Friend Owl a wise old owl that lived in the forest when we finally got to the thicket we saw the cutest little thing a baby deer and her mother the mother said she will call him Bambi
    Misty: Time passed and soon Bambi was on his first walk with his mother it wasn't long before we saw some more birds and Bambi tried to say his first word bird with a little help from Thumper we taught Bambi a few more words like Butterfly and flower
    Me: It wasn't long before a skunk popped out of a flower patch Bambi thought it was a flower but the skunk said he can call him a flower if he wants to and that's how we got to know Flower
    Misty: Later that day it began to rain and Thumper had to go home and we helped Bambi get back to the thicket where his mother was waiting
    Me: Time passed and soon it was summer and it was time for Bambi's first trip to the meadow when we got there Bambi's mother warned us there might be danger
    Misty: Bambi's mother looked and looked then she said it was safe and we played with Bambi in the meadow it wasn't long before we saw Thumper again he and his family were eating blossoms
    Me: Soon Bambi got curious about a frog and followed him into a pond were we saw another dear faun she looked just like Bambi except she had blue eyes instead of brown
    Misty: the faun introduced herself as Faline needles to say Bambi was a little shy at first but soon they were playing together it wasn't long before many more dear came leaping along and we leaped with them
    Me: We had a lot of fun and soon they stopped to see the most wise stag we've ever seen the great prince of the forest
    Misty: He was on patrol in the meadow everything seemed fine until we saw some crows fleeing that meant hunters were near we told the prince to take the deer to safety while we distracted the hunters
    Me: We managed to drive the hunters away but it wouldn't be the last time we saw them as we would soon discover
    Misty: Time passed and soon summer changed into fall and fall into winter Bambi was curious about the snow it wasn't long before we saw Thumper again he was skating on ice
    Me: We had a lot of fun skating then we found Flower hibernating in his den winter was fun for Bambi at first but as time passed he began to grow tired of the snow we did our best to keep him warm
    Misty: One winter day Bambi's mother found some grass for Bambi to eat for the first time in winter he was happy but it didn't last long as Bambi's mother saw the hunters again we told them we would distract the hunters while they got to safety
    Me: We did our best to drive the hunters away but it was all in vain they shot Bambi's mother it was a sad moment it wasn't long before the great prince of the forest appeared again telling Bambi to come with him
    Misty: Time passed and soon it was spring again Bambi had grown into a great stag Thumper had grown too and still had his thumping feet Flower had grown up too he was still the bashful skunk he was
    Me: it wasn't long before we saw two birds Friend Owl explained they were twitterpated needles to say neither Bambi Thumper or Flower liked the idea of being twitterpated
    Misty: The three of them went on their way and we followed in pursuit it wasn't long before Flower saw a beautiful girl skunk and fell in love
    Me: Shortly after Thumper met a girl bunny and also fell in love it wasn't long before we saw a familiar deer we haven't seen since Bambi's first trip to the meadow Faline only now she was a beautiful doe
    Misty: It wasn't long before Bambi started to fall in love with Faline but it didn't last long as another stag Ronno by name started to challenge Bambi for Faline
    Me: We insisted Bambi that he wasn't alone in this fight and we would help him it was a long fight but Ronno was defeated Bambi had won Faline's heart
    Misty: Time passed and soon Spring turned into summer and summer into fall one day Bambi thought he smelled smoke he looked down at a cliff with his father the great prince of the forest and saw the hunters again
    Me: The prince explained that we had to go deep into the forest we told them we would distract the hunters while all the forest animals got to safety
    Misty: We did our best to distract the hunters but in our haste we thought we heard barking we looked and saw Faline cornered by a pack of dogs
    Me: Again we insisted we help Bambi in this fight while Faline got to safety it was a long fight but the dogs got buried in a pile of rocks
    Misty: We rushed to distract the hunters but they shot Bambi he wasn't dead like his mother just unconscious we stayed by his side for a bit
    Me: Before long we thought we smell smoke we looked and saw a fire spreading there were forest animals running for their lives
    Misty: Soon the great prince of the forest came and urged Bambi to get up
    Me: We told the prince that Misty would play firefighter with her water pokemon while I helped him and Bambi get to safety it was a dangerous escape but we made it to safety where Faline was waiting we watched as Misty put out the fire with her water pokemon
    Misty: Time passed and soon fall turned into winter and winter into spring it wasn't long before we saw Thumper waking up Friend Owl again
    Me: We went into the thicket where we saw that Faline had given birth to two fauns Geno and Gurri Friend Owl said that prince Bambi would be proud
    Misty: Sure enough we looked up at a cliff and saw Bambi and the great prince of the forest looking down proudly at his kids
    Me: Soon the portal back to Kanto opened and we realized we had to say goodbye but we knew in our hearts that we would see Bambi and his friends again very soon
    Misty: You forgot about Bambi 2
    Me: Yes I did but that's a story for another time

    Bambi's one of those so good it's bad films. I mean that as a compliment. It's the kind of film where you can acknowledge that it does it's job very well but you don't need to watch it again. God forbid you find something wrong with it. Like Doug said, you're pretty much just watching Bambi's life but if you go back and watch it again, you're just emphasizing the fact that his life is an illusion. It's kind of like trying to bring Bambi's mom back from the grave and life just doesn't work like that.

      Is it bad I come back to Bambi 2 more than the first one? I mean I can definitely tell which film is bigger scale in quality and landmark, but like you said, after you see the first one once, there's less to draw you back in. It's an artistry piece for the large part, not as much for characters and story (despite Bambi still being primarily marketed as a 'toon').

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 Před 7 lety

      I see no problem with going back to Bambi 2 more than the first one. It's a great movie and did everything it could to recapture the spirit of the original but some experiences just can't be recaptured, even if you re-watch the very thing that gave you that experience in the first place. The best you can do is remember it. Personally, when I have powerful experiences that should never be forgotten I write them down. However, I'm reluctant to go through them again, either out of fear that I don't have the emotional strength to do so or, even more frighteningly, that the experience might not be so amazing the next time. You still respect Bambi as a piece of art don't you?

    • @ToonReel001
      @ToonReel001 Před 7 lety

      Bambi was probably the most art centric of Disney's early films besides Fantasia. I do know it got complaints early on for that (likely why it bombed box office first time round), a lot of people even to this day expected it to just be a cute little cartoon about a baby deer, but it plays a concept very uniquely and atmospherically. From what I know it was Walt's favourite project, which makes it sadder it wasn't appreciated initially.

    • @tomnorton4277
      @tomnorton4277 Před 7 lety

      Some works of art only get recognised as masterpieces over time.
      I didn't know that Bambi bombed although that's mainly because I wasn't alive when it came out. In fact, my middle aged parents hadn't even been born at the time and, if my maths is correct (which it might not be since maths has never been my strong point), my surviving grandparents were still children. Sometimes one can forget how old this movie truly is. Over seven decades and it hasn't been forgotten. It's kind of amazing. Anyway, it goes to show how flawed the critics are. They don't always recognise a timeless movie until after it comes out.
