  • Remember that old movie you once watched where the Mum dies? Well, Bambi is more than just a depressing children’s meme, or an IP ripe for a live-action remake, or even one of Walt Disney's best, it's one of Sam's most treasured animated films of all time.

Thanks for watching, gang! This is a video I've wanted to make for years (literally) and finally enough people enthusiastically asked me where the next Sam's Channel video was, that I finally caved and delivered. It's been a joy to discuss a film I adore so much, and if you enjoyed it too, please feel free to share it amongst your friends and family who've not watched Bambi in a good 'ol while. Thanks again!

    I can tell you this.
If Citizen kane is a must watch for any film student.
Bambi is a must watch for every animation student.

During my childhood I read a Golden Book or a comic book of Disney's Bambi. I went on to read the original Felix Salten novel and even it's sequel,Bambi's Children. Bambi is a rare case of my liking the book as well as the movie.

I was introduced to Bambi as a very young child through a book and I loved it. It touched me in so many ways.
(NOT LIKE THAT! DIRTY MINDED BASTERDS.) I felt happy, sad, Angry, tense. Then several years later I saw the movie.
I was expecting it to be lake the other Disney animated film. Some songs some jokes a moral and a good time.
Instead It was if they just went into nature and animated the life of this dear and then left. Like a documentary.
It wasn't what I expected. It was much much more.

I found this video because I just rewatched Bambi and was STUNNED. I had totally succumbed to the common post-80s perception that you described here, but the film is so so so much more than that. Great video.

Holy cow! Do my eyes deceive me? Sam uploaded!! Hallelujah!
But seriously, this video did an excellent job summarizing how the "less is more" approach has helped Bambi stand the test of time. Sometimes, simplicity can be your story's greatest strength.
Your tangent on the bully deer (that's my official name for him) got me thinking on how Disney has really been overcompensating on giving villains fleshed out backstories instead of just letting them be (to borrow some of your British slang) complete arseholes. Looking at you Maleficent and Cruella.
An excellent video essay through and through. All these years and you have not lost your luster one bit. Cheers, mate!
P.S. The world was on fire in 1942? 2020 says hello.

Bambi is one of my top Disney-movies for many of the reasons you've stated.
To me, it is Art with a capital A.
First of all, it's just gorgeous to look at. It is one of the most beautiful pictures to look at from the backgrounds to the animation. "Little April Shower" is just so beautiful with the waterdrops that becomes a little stream. Or the forest fire in the end. And how they manage to capture the feel of the forest and the changing of the seasons it's just so, so stunning.
So yeah, not interested in the "but what if we made it realistic? In a computer!" Part of the awe that Bambi inspires is the fact that it was made by humans. These are animals drawn by hand, background drawn by real people.
And as for the story.. you could say it's thin on plot, yes, but not on themes. It is about life. About growing up. And about nature. Told in a meditative, relaxed way with some (but not too many) sprinkles of fun visual gags.

I remember rewatching Bambi at the beginning of quarantine and being equally as blown away as you by the film. It's so different from what Disney as a brand is known for (like many of Walt's early films). It functions more as a mood piece or rumination on life than a traditional narrative. And its commitment to being grounded in objective reality only stands out more with time. And it's a shame Disney hasn't upheld its image as a bold artistic statement in favor of marketing it as a vapid fluffy kids movie. Great video as always :)

I was hoping you would go into more detail about why you think this works better than Lion King, and I'm surprised you didn't bring how Land Before Time was trying to be a prehistoric version of this lol 🤔.

“Bambi is better than the Lion King” less than a minute in and you already lost me zero out of ten 😜
But in all seriousness this is such a wonderful loving exploration of the thematic nuances of a film that clearly means a lot to you. I never saw Bambi as a child but I now want to go check it out to see what I’ve been missing.

Okey to his credit while something like the lion king was trying to be Hamlet for kids this one is more boyhood for kids, or any coming of age film. And they both literally diferent animals.

Well at for me is better because it feels more experimental than lion king since the latter is more traditional with a pure evil villain, comedy relief characters to sell to the children... with fart jokes... and a 3 act structure.
And don't get me wrong theres nothing bad with beeing traditional, is just that modern disney do this type of film all the time that it keep feeding into peoples prejudice that animation is for kids and theres nothing New for adults to experiment (just look at wish and you know what i mean). When old school Disney films like this and fantasía were anything but traditional fairy tales. Even his "traditional" ones like snowhite and pinnochio where more hardcore than their modern version of those.
