Back in the 00s, Nescafe gave red mugs with their coffee and so that's what my parents had at home. I grew up watching them drink coffee out of red mugs. I naturally associate red with coffee, and I LOVE my red cups. I chose the red v60, just naturally. It's very interesting to know that this is actually a rather universal experience! I thought it was just because of my childhood experiences.
I think geometry is a factor for aroma perception, which in turn impacts taste perception. Probably worth repeating the test with multiple cups of the same geometry only varying color and do a blindfolded assessment.
I recently bought a set of espro tasting cups and this set has taste profiles paired to the 4 different geometries. In using them the chocolate one has had the most noticeable impact.
I have a few of the Loveramics tasting cups. They come in 11 different colors so may be fun to taste through those as well
I was going to comment that the shape and thickness of each mug will contribute to the taste and heat retention which may affect flavour more than the color though it's hard to know, there may also be a placebo effect too
Yes yes!! I love red and it is so very true that reality is your perception and perception is reality yep. But also your red mug has that beautiful wide mouth that can accommodate lots of the lovely coffee caramel/foam in proportion to coffee and that is going to enhance your coffee experience.❤
Nice video! Interesting stuff! Thanks for sharing
I loved this psychology episode, nice one and thanks for bringing such a finding up.
Well, I noticed the same, I know that I enjoy coffee in bright coloured ceramic cups but I've always thought it's totally a subjective feeling rather than a phenomenon.
Time to get the red Christmas mugs back out of the cupboard.
Imagine the shape and construction also makes a difference.
Had a similar shape mug that broke, very keen to replace it.
Usually drink out of glass at the moment
If I can find a set of these in different colors (or some other ceramic to make it a better taste test) may try this again. There was a set of about 100 of these cups on eBay over the summer. Wish I had picked them up now!
You’re describing what occurred in the old “cola war” tests. Different criteria, but same conceptual results. What it all points to is this: users are not seeking just one aspect of an experience. They want the whole experience. Note to coffee shops, restaurants etc: you can buy/serve cheaper coffee of inferior quality, as long as you serve it in red cups!
Intersubjectivity is foundation for objectivity - Husserl & phenomenology, also Edith Stein & capacity for human empathy.
Need more data. All coffee CZcamsrs should do similar test.
Geometry, mass, density and overall quality of the ceramic used in each cup were more at play in your experiment rather than the cup's color.
Psychology “research” has serious problems to include everything from non-replication to statistical distortion to outright fraud. Research findings that seem too trite or outrageous or interesting often are the result of badly constructed or fraudulent research. See, as a recent but not outlying example, the very popular Harvard professor who fraudulently studied how to keep people from being…fraudulent. But although her research was made up, she was really cool and slick and “authentic” on TED Talks… 😊
