  • Audeze Maxwell is one of the most requested wireless gaming headsets and it ROCKS! I mean wow... forget wired headphones, Maxwell does literally everything. Including a neck workout because of the weight. After 30 days, it's definitely one of my new favorites, but not without a few annoying bugs.

Im happy to see that gaming headsets are starting to focus more on audio as well since most of the time a dedicated pair of headphones is superior. Im no audiophile so it makes no significant difference to me but I can understand other people's excitement

I wouldn't say gaming headsets are generally started to focus more on audio quality, it's just Audeze being audiophile company at first place know how headphones should sound. I am and audiophile, and Maxwell is pretty aggressively priced even comparing to a good quality headphones. No wonder Sony has bought them recently.

I've owned TB, Razer, Steel Series, Astro gaming headsets priced $150-300, and other headsets priced $500+ for music. The Audeze Maxwell is incredible. They're basically the perfect blend with little compromise. The 80hr battery life is INSANE - who needs two batteries (Steel Series) when a single charge overnight will probably last all week. Wicked Cushions are a must though - b/c the stock pads are too shallow.

What happens if you position the microphone arm's capsule farther away from the mouth? Will you get less of a proximity effect? I wanted a microphone that sounded like a studio condenser microphone, but microphones that attach to the boom arm or stand alone on top of the desk are stationary and I need to be able to move my head and body around from time to time.
And of course, I could see myself using this headset for making/receiving phone calls, so having Bluetooth is great to have. The only limitation is I won't be able to use my studio equipment that uses XML for going from my hardware preamp, to expander/compressor/limiter, to my audio interface. I currently have a Samson SR860 headphone and Movo LV8-D omni-directional lavalier microphone.

Great review, thanks. But i did not find here detailed info about spatial sound experience. Does this headset support some kind of virtual surround in any Games? Or does surround work only with Atmos supporting games and just in Stereo mode in all others? For example Logitech Pro X has DTS:X virtual surround, and works absolutely with any games, movies as well. There are quite a few games with native Atmos support. Also, Cant find info on how many surround channels it supports - 7.1, 9.1. Would be great to clarify it. Thanks!

    • @Necronomous
      @Necronomous Před měsícem

Sorry for late answer but the Maxwell's are stereo headphones. Well, almost every gamingheadset out there are stereo headsets acctually. It is due to the software you can get 7.1 surroundsound in them. Very rare that gamingheadsets are native 7.1 surroundsound that's because they would get very heavy to wear. I tested my Razer Blackshark V2 PRO with both Dolby Atmos and the THX 7.1 surround and yeah, the THX that these was built for gives a little bit more clarity to the surround, but Dolby Atmos wasn't far behind at all.
Audeze Maxwell however are built for Dolby Atmos so these will be more accurate with the surround than the Razwer Blackshark V2 PRO for example. Everything will work with all games. Just that some games will work better because they are configured to the absolute perfection to follow the software that gives the surroundsound.
Then you shall know that Dolby Atmos are developed to work with ALL headsets with stereo and ain't locked to a specific software like many of these gamingheadsets are. As I mentioned, sure it say 7.1 on another headsets but they often ain't 7.1 native. It is the software that gives them the 7.1 surroundsound. They made some with native 7.1 as I said, they where damn expensive and very heavy to use and it was complicated asf to make the speakers to work properly as a true 7.1 surroundsystem in the headset because of the limited space to build it in. So this native surroundsystem in gamingheadsets etcetera was scrapped. Instead it was better to get bloody darn good stereospeakers with a bloody darn good software that mimics 5.1, 7.1, 9.1, one billion point 1 or whatever. It was more cheap, less weight and the troubles with setting each speaker so it sounded perfect as a native 7.1 disappeared.

I recently moved from the Hyperx Orbit (basically a rebadged Mobuis) to the Maxwell due to the bad build quality of the orbit/mobuis which is the worst that I've seen so far in the headphone world (and I have owned and tried to ALOT of headphones, both HIFI and gaming). With that said, I honestly think that out of the box the Orbit/mobuis in terms of tonality and bass performance sounds much better than the maxwell while the maxwell is much more detailed but very lean in the bass region, bright and a bit fatiguing IMO.
So, I have been playing with the EQ in the audeze software for a while now attempting to make it sound rounder, warmer with punchier bass and I'm liking the results so far.
Here is the EQ settings I'm using right now for both music/gaming which I recommend for everyone to give it a try :
    32hz: -1db
    64hz: 6db
    125hz: 2db (or 1db)
    250hz: -3db
    500hz: -5db
    1Khz: -2hz
    2Khz: -2hz
    4Khz: -3hz
    8Khz: -5hz
    16Khz: from -6db to -9 (your taste)

Coming from my MMX300 I wanted to change to something wireless and then had the Maxwells for 1 month. Sound is awesome, software and EQ are great and battery life is just another level, had zero bugs on these. But I just couldn't wear them comfortably for more than 45min. They are heavy and sturdy. I also used the wicked cushions, they are plush but add even more weight. Couldn't just get happy with these comfortwise. And the planar sound is just a bit "too clean" in some games what killed the immersion a bit to me.
I changed to the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro which is not on par soundwise, has lower battery life (2 swappables), but has also really decent drivers with impactful bass and is just total fun im games. It has also a great EQ, is comfy and has great ANC which helps you get immersed completely. If I hadn't heard the Maxwells before I would say the TB has the best sound of actual gaming headsets and imaging is also great.

I have 2 concerns about the Maxwells: First is the Comfort because they're over 500 grams, and second is the imaging or footsteps location ability compared to the Stealth Pro.
I would say that i bought the Turtle beach 700 gen2 max and returned them the same day, the sound and build quality were terrible so i'm afraid to buy another Turtle beach headset.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have this headset and it’s just about perfect, no noise artifacts like those you noticed, none at all. The sound is amazing, the microphone likewise (odd that you usually focus so much on microphones but didn’t this time, compare it to Steelseries and will see how crap Steelseries mikes are).it seems you came late to the game and tried to do it differently, but highlighting a sound artifact that you’re the only one getting without any further investigation seems like lack of professionalism to me. The only problem I have with the Maxwell is with the PC software that doesn’t allow me to set custom profiles, it disconnects the dongle every time I try. But since I can do that through my phone app, it kinda solves the problem. Though Audeze will have to address this problem sooner or later. Summing up: there’s no other wireless gaming headset that can even compare to the Maxwell.

I’ve tried this headset and I have to disagree about the imaging. You said imaging is great, but I tried this headset extensively and imaging is good at best, but not great. There are many other headsets out there that are miles better at imaging. Yes the overall sound quality is amazing and probably the best headset for that, but to me they’re more aiming at music listening for that and not gaming. It just happens to have very well tuned planar magnetic drivers that suits most games as well as music, but as someone who mostly plays FPS games, imaging is definitely not something I’d buy this headset for
Well tuned SteelSeries Nova 7 is not far off in sound quality in games and it has great imaging and it’s literally half the price of the Audeze Maxwell

@@HardwareCanucks Oh yeah the resolution on the Maxwell is top tier, but for gaming do you really need top tier resolution? As someone who has been using the Arctis Pro Wireless for several years, I thought it was time to upgrade and I came to the Audeze Maxwell. I gave it a try, and after 3 days, I will be returning them. The Maxwell headset had this annoying thing where it took 15 seconds to connect to my PC each and every time I turned it on. And secondly, I felt that this headset wasn't even much of an audio improvement over the Arctis Pro Wireless. Third, the wireless range on the Maxwell is absolutely horrible. With the Steelseries Arctis Pro Wireless, I can walk halfway across my house before my headset loses signal, and upon returning back to my PC, it will automatically connect back to give me audio. With the Audeze Maxwell, one I leave my room, the headset already loses signal and then disconnects from my PC, which is annoying because reconnecting it will take another 15 seconds after I turn it off and back on.
