St. Patrick has many mythical tales associated with him. Most famously, he is credited with driving the snakes out of Ireland (even though there have never been snakes in Ireland). This story, which comes to us from the 12th century seems to be one of many miraculous acts attributed to Partick. Snakes are often taken here to be a metaphor for pagans, thereby claiming that Patrick drove the pagans out of Ireland. However, that’s not what he did and that’s not why he was important in his time. In fact, in his own lifetime Patrick wasn’t a big player in Ireland’s conversion. He was not a king or a queen… perhaps you could say he was a bishop. The modern-day story of Patrick seems to be the final step in the evolution of a cultural hero. Today, we will be talking about the real St. Patrick and how he came to be the patron saint of Ireland. Apologies for any mispronunciation of Irish names, I am but a lowly eachtrannach.
