    If you are unlicensed or don't have an HF radio, this is a great way to start building familiarity with the software that's needed, without having to buy anything. The caveat is that this method requires a steady internet connection, so it's not great for off grid use.

    For those in the comments, running JS8 call with an RTL-SDR is essentially the exact same process. The difference is that you set up the RTL-SDR to run in SDR++, listen to the frequency you want in USB (Upper Side Band) mode, run the virtual audio cable to JS8call, and it should work exactly the same way.

Communication is going to make it or break it for us at some point… however the analysis or brief of events taking place across the United States that is never reported is vital now as well.. there have been so many things recently I would really like to hear from the team about.. of all the channels out there S2 is nearest and dearest to me and most similar to my own thought processes in many ways .. I'm surprised they don't have a third option for time syncing, using the various national atomic clock radio transmissions. My watch does this. It's very convenient to know precisely what time it is for manually syncing things. It's more accurate than my cellphone. Software, especially radio software that has the ability to receive these transmissions, should be able to do this automatically as an option.

    • @joemcmanus79
      @joemcmanus79 Před 10 měsíci

      CW is still the best way to get a message through under rough to just borderline impossible conditions, HOWEVER there's NO, ZERO SECURITY on the signals!
      In a SHTF situation the ONLY security your messages will have is the code book that you and all your team members ALREADY have, and don't forget, even a descent Intel 386 can run software that'll be able to crack the average cypher, so don't forget to layer it, it's NOT perfect (no cypher IS) but it'll piss the red team off enough to maybe make them think twice about the one IMPORTANT message, especially if all the others are routine house keeping messages.

    • @joemcmanus79
      @joemcmanus79 Před 10 měsíci

      @@hardwired3640 Good day to ya, I want to make this PERFECTLY clear, I was not in any way, shape or form denigrating JS8CALL or ANY of the other digital modes in any way, I was speaking of an overall type of situation.
      In a SHTF situation, (a worse case scenario) a person might NOT have access to a desktop, a laptop, notepad, or even a Raspberry Pi, to run the decoding software on, he/she might not have access to GPS or a stable / accurate time hack, or hell, he/she might barely have a radio to RX with due to the existing circumstances what ever they may be.
      When you get down to it, one should always prepare for the worse possible conditions, and prepare to work within those conditions and constraints and go from there.
      When the SHTF, old school might JUST save a life or two.

    • @fliper975
      @fliper975 Před 10 měsíci

      Biggest issue is that the system clock is "kept alive" by your CMOS battery. If it goes dead (which they do more often than you'd think) you would have to manually sync time anyways. Until you replace the CMOS you will have to re-sync it every time. Also, I'm sure timezones play a role in it all too.

      No worse than the radio itself. You just have to keep the battery charged using some kind of power source and any repeaters you’re using need to stay up as well. I guess the way to think about this is that the more you know, the more options you have to handle any failure in parts of the system along the way. Obviously there are totally catastrophic scenarios that you couldn’t overcome but those are unlikely.

      The first mistake is running the 32 bit version of windows 10. 😅. Driver support in 2023 for hardware either a 32 bit is is scarce.. might as well move to a Linux distro dude.

    does anyone know if JS8Call can take input from a UV5R and decode incoming digital transmissions?

    • @hardwired3640
      @hardwired3640 Před 10 měsíci

      The uv5r is totally the wrong tool for the job. If you’re determined to stick with the uv5r than APRS or packet radio is the mode you’re looking for. JS8CALL is for SSB radios and is much better.

      thanks for the reply, im new to the radio world, so i dont really understand much of what you just said lol. im interested in how to set up a local police scanner on the cheap, just found a video on how to do it with an SDR. im seeing now that the uv5r is definitely not the right tool for the job. @@hardwired3640

      @@joecactus91 if the public service channel is analog the UV5R will work. If they’re P25 and not encrypted you can use an RTLSDR in conjunction with DSD+ program to listen.

      This is a way to learn JS8Call, and if you add an SDR dongle to your computer you'll be able to get the signal from the airways without the internet. Once you're equipped with an armateur radio, that will provide both send and receive capabilities. At least that's my understanding.

    BTW, FYI 7.078 MHz would be LSB (Lower Side Band) NOT USB as shown herein.
    I mention this for all those who don't know .
    Furthermore, 2,200m, 630m, 160m, 80/75m, 40m bands are ALL LSB, 20m bands and up are all USB.
    Oh, sorry, I didn't mention it, but VERY nice, & TY for the tutorial, I normally don't DO digital sig because it's been a P.I.T.A. for me, but w/this, 👍🤘!
