I work at the Panasonic repair center. Those units shouldn't get that hot. I would open up the panel that has the barcode scanner. There is a small internal battery (like one used in a cordless phone) for hot swapping the main battery. Those batteries go bad and I've seen them swell up like a balloon. Try unplugging that internal battery to see if that is the cause of your heat problem. You can run the unit without the internal battery if it's bad. It's only there to give you about 15 minutes of charge so you can swap the main battery.

Not directly related, but I've used alot of old toughbooks and man those things can take a beating. Not always the most user-friendly, but they're like the ACOGs of computers

@@barclaymatheson8240 , ahh, I haven’t seen that one yet. I originally purchased a prosumer “commercial” singer machine but it struggled going through multiple layers of harness webbing and Cordura. More recently I purchased a Juki computer controlled machine that has a lot more horsepower and automatically adapts from going through thick materials to thin rip-stop liner materials.

@@MedSpark you need an in field repair kit with thicker needles and curved needles. fabrication isn't that hard, almost anything can be re purposed for multiple uses. trsh bags as shelter/rain poncho/cover, etc, etc.the sewing machine stuff is a luxury. you're not taking that with you.
this sent me on a rabbit hole. just ordered a Pine64 Atlas 4GB SBC kit, a couple RTL-SDRs and some other goodies. gonna purchase a simple 7" capacitive touch screen from Ali and repurpose the whole rig into a mini-mobile ADS-B+others rig.
please don't stop with these so-called "boring" radio/field comms videos. this is invaluable information, especially during these times.

I recommend running the SDR server software on something like a PI or similar and using the table as a client. This allows more performance and enables passive data collection without needing to clutter the tablet system. Since the tablet is going to be more power constrained having the server off the device makes more sense.

How is your field computer kit coming along after one year? I am 24 years young snd have just begun to learn about the use cases of sdr, and mesh networks
Some 0311 advice on your gear craft:
1. That aux charging port you have on the back, for solar charging. Snake it in-out-in-out of the molle webbing so it doesn't fall out.
2. The hole you poked in the bottom of the pouch for the aux charging port. Sew up the sides of the cut so it doesn't open over time, 10-15 loops of thread is sufficient for each side. Use pliers to poke the needle through the cordura.
3. That ugly bottom pouch for the extra charging cables, just use a longer pouch man, that way your bundle of cables can flatten out a little and be more sleek.
4. The exterior pouch for weather sensor, pull the flap out (IF it's velcro'd in) and re-install it about 1" deeper so that it fits the sensor more snugly. Not too snug, you want plenty of air getting in there.
5. Internal cable management. Use some velcro ties to tie together the bottom 3" of those cables, trust me man it'll make it easier to re-arrange them as needed but will keep them from jiggling loose as much when used.
6. The neck loop of nylon on the back of pouch, if you make the loops on each side smaller then the male end clips will have less room to bounce around when you strap this entire pouch to your backpack.
Nice pack! If you want to get around the summer heat, you might be able to make a manifold for the back of the tablet or any airflow ports and force air, or more air, through it with a 5V fan run from the power line of a usb port. Not sure if that would bring down the temps enough to operate the device in the worst conditions but as long as the air is cooler than the device, it'll be doing some cooling.

@S2Underground 3:30 good idea is to use every charger in usb-c PD version. You can buy different adapter (sometimes very manufacturer specific) as a usb-c adapters. This way you can use all powerbank and ac phone chargers (if in PD - power delivery standard) up to 120w. Charger / powerbank negotiates voltage with adapter (5/9/12/20V) so you can power most devices just using different adapters (for few $) :)
Also newer „GaN” chargers are smaller and more efficent.
You should pick up a hackrf 1 and a porta pack 2. Upload the mayhem firmware and then you have a small aircraft receiver. It needs very little power plus you get a full sdr reciever and transmitter. It’s quite useful.

And it allows you to pick up on the signals of your enemies keyboards providing they're using wireless once. I would also like to know here under the sdr section that almost all modern cars use the same NFR 24 chips for key fob remotes either that or they operate it 314 MHz using a slightly different chip but still vulnerable especially should triangulation of signals if three people have hackrfs or some other sdr rtl sdrs would work. For a lot of it the three of you can monitor for car being. Unlocked with keyfob or other such radio signals for instance those transmitted by drones I believe it on the battlefield of the future got the sdr may become the single most important weapon and take it's place with the rifle and mortar as one of the key infantry I think the sdr will neutralize quadcopters other drone make it so that infantry without other intelligence assets are aware of their the enemy surveilling them as well as potentially you're being able to gather information on the disposition enemy forces without the use of other advanced technology I think the radio spectrum will become the asymmetric battlefield of the future the the inner the net in a sense that cyberpunk prophesize essentially open system where you just reach in and pull out information

note: you need 2 receivers, minimum, to triangulate a transmission, when it’s person-in-a-parking-lot … the triangle is those 3 points, the 2 listeners + 1 target.
- or - 🤔 you’ll only need the 3rd listener antenna if you need to triangulate the altitude, which admittedly could be useful, but people usually just want the direction. 😮 in a world of drones, altitude worth knowing! … & also 3 drones would make a *really* fun direction-finding array.
2nd note: seeing the 314MHz reminded me … there may exist European vs. American versions of this? little gagets that are 315MHz-ish, often have complimentary units at 433MHz-ish for the other market. 🤷♀️ Something about regulations on ISM band devices.

for power adapters proprietary connectors cut and reconnect with something like an IP68 waterproof quick connect. Use silicone epoxy to affix the proprietary plug into the device so it doesn't get lost and also seals it. Then you can snap it in and out of any adapter you need with the no-solder quick connects on the IP68 on the fly as long as you have the right voltage. Bonus points if you get a few boost and buck adapters to be able to adjust voltages as needed from the source.

Thanks for sharing the details of your setup. I use the same admin pouch for my long range shooting setup. Kestrel goes in the same pocket and a rangefinger in the front pocket.
This rig looks very good for portability and it doesn’t scream coms guy from a distance. For transmitting, you may want to research a half wave to toss up in a tree at a forward LP, etc.
I really like this channel because it covers so much of the “other” gun stuff.

Yeah it's not something that's great to think about, but the balloon incident and the Ohio crisis was personally the last straw for me to suck it up and incorporate CBRN preparedness into more daily usage.

Regarding those Chargers for your tablet .. you might find a USB-C (PD) to Barrel or whatever Adapter with the right voltage. These Adapers are very small and then you could use any PD USB-C Charger, Powerbank and so on. I'm using this Setup for almost everything and replaced all my charging bricks with just one and 65 Watts (up to 20V) PD Powerbank.

2. thermal tubes
3. 2 hours work
cut all cables to desired lenght, solder them, don't forget about slack for curves and turns and coiling of cables. put extra thermal tubes on full lenght of cable and shrink it with a lighter and put warm into the bag, it will remember the correct shape.
bonus:
buy knee-bent connectors instead of straight ex. usb, antenna out etc. and replace the original ones.
oh You already have these usb knee bent connectors. Just cut the cables and affix them in the pouch then.

well, i made an aluminium case for my thinkpad.
If going as far as soldering, there’s also pretty effective water-resistant mil-spec connectors that could be integrated if disconnecting anything is necessary while maintaining reliability/water-resistance.

Have something similar with FZ-G1 only running Linux (which I had no issues with on this tablet). I would also recommend some external wireless network adapters and wireless network testing software. Just basic tools to look for weak security that a 10 year old can use with a bit of practice. Even if most of the internet was down there would be these localized wireless networks everywhere (if you can get close enough to play with them).

Who's gonna run wifi AP if all internets are down and for what purpose? I think in case of timeX all cozy WPA2 would disappear and you'll need to get into radius and all kinds of nasty stuff gov and corps usualy host. Not to mention that you have to be in posession of very serious (huge) rig to be able to connect from far away and simultaneously not to expose yourself too much. Afterall, wifi signal is quite easy to pinpoint. Pirating wifi is very good when you are being covert in highly populated, preferrably urban area, with population living its every day comfy life. I dont think it would be of big use when shit hits the fan so hard that even internets would become downed.
maybe put a presentation together for the ADSB; I'm a long time ham, and did some similar or related work in the Army, but I never thought about tracking aircraft. A how, and a why, presentation would be nice.

I was thinking the same thing. So many acronyms. He probably has some of these videos already, but I definitely need the how and why. Im technical enough to get up to speed, but I've never even considered some of these capabilities, or even usefulness of tracking aircraft etc.

@@CmdrCorn If you have an SDR that can transmit. With ham radio, you can do email, digital comms (weak signal) and even use it for a link for an internet connection in a few different ways. With the typical dongle type SDR you will only receive, which can still be fun

I have the budget version of this (baofeng with 2 antenna and a radio direction finder) only because I’d rather carry ammo than radio equipment.
Spread out the USB ports a little with a pair of pliers: makes them stay put better.
Also, tape does wonders too, just use something that is moisture resistant and doesn't leave a residue.
You can fix the big charger issue by finding an adapter that goes from either a generic DC plug or a USB C to the proprietary plug. If it requires a low enough wattage then you can charge off a normal power bank, or if it's more intensive, use a higher power USB C wall wart.
On the topic of chargers for laptops/tablets. I've found most devices are essentially 20vdc. You can get USBc PD emulator devices that will negotiate 20V from PD capable devices, along with generic 2.1mm x 5.5mm barrel jack connectors. The advantage of that barrel jack is theres a host of adapters to other barrel jacks/connectors. This allows you to use power banks to charge your laptop regardless of its ability to charge from USBc. The sharkgeek stuff is capable of 100w USBc PD, Anker has stuff as well. I have a USB solar charger... This setup unifies to a USBc standard I find to be pretty versatile.
Aliexpress has multiple usb-c pd pre-made adapters with the correct voltage and plug for lots of common brands, barely bigger than the plug itself, carry one for every custom requirement. I can charge my dell laptop using one. My usb-pd 60w charger is smaller than most phones/battery packs (and only 10mm thick). It charges everything happily.
Might want to consider using heat-shrink tubing to make those connections a bit more reliable. You can use non-adhesive lined hs tubing if you want to easily separate it later, or adhesive lined for more reliable and waterproof results.
Take apart and solder connections as well...
Could try and turn those tent supports into conductive bits so radio signals can be caught by it. Could boost the receiver, but I'm just getting into this so I'll keep watching.
a useful setup I have been using is an SDR combined with a phone. With a phone plugged in to a hub on my kit that also interfaces with a USB based SDR dongle, I can use my phone to route any signal I want through my comms and also run ATAK and other custom software on it. With this and a UV5R I have a very useful multi-band setup that can route the signals however I need in a 2lb package. Tx time even on a 2ah pack kinda sucks though.

For power I would recommend you switch over to USB PD over USB C. You can get 16v and 19v cables which will both work with this. In this way you can run a solar panel and external battery much more easily.
Nice setup. Their is a nice HF RX called ATS25 SDR which is nice and small and lasts a long time on batt at around $100. And just a long wire thrown over a tree provides great RX. All the best 73's
Regarding chargers, many new tablets/laptops support charging over USBC, A 45-65W USBC power brick and USBC cord take up next to no space and open charging options...
Alternatively adapters exist online that accept USBC input to a proprietary output

whew, a lot of this is above my head. Believe it or not I am a retired Network Engineer. But that was 10 years ago. I did NOT keep up with technology since then. I wish I had somone like you around to teach me more. What do you think about VTAC? the civilian version?
with JS8-call if you are receiving other stations you can use build-in functionality to set your time according to those other stations.
What can help with that screen glare is a matte privacy screen protector. I think an 8" would do for that tablet. Also, cover the camera with electrical tape.
Can you drop a gear list? Also, what kind of sensors are you using? Do you think a package similar to this could be built into small drones? Asking purely for discussion and tinkering.
I converted my Getac f110 rugged tablet(Windows based samsies brick issue) to recieve USBc powerdemand, so now it uses a small G.A.N.(instead of silicone based charging) wallwart of 90watt that charges my phone, garmin watch and tablet simultaniously from 1 outlet.
Great video as always S2! I was able to recreate nearly everything here except having the Flightstick and Airnav Radarbox work *without* the Internet. The Airnav forum and manual (software not updated since 2008) were no help. Keep fighting in the shade!
What you need is a MOBILE ROUTER - then you can have a MOBILE NETWORK then you can network all incompatible OS. You get time off your mobile router.
Where do keep your gun and ammunition?
Toss out rubber duckies antennae and use rugger panel antennae.
USE magnetic rubber sheets - longer lasting than Velco. You can put magnetic rubber base on coffee cups, too.
Just think, two pieces of equipment could take out the lot! You also need a Ulefone Power Armor 20WT portable so you can have numerous communications alternatives including G4LTE, WiFi, Bluetooth, Scrambled voice communications, etc.

Similar setup with ours mate. There will always be trade-offs with this setup even though functional. Quick solution with the heat when in the field, we just use blue ice pack for heat radiation. Great vid & informative. Cheers from Australia.
I really like those little bluetooth keyboards for this device. I run my tablet with a usb hub (switched), and have the more advanced cradle also. I do indeed have some of those splitters on had I will have to try.
Been doing a lot of research on these little tablets. I have 7 of them that I use for different things. Hard to beat the solid state nature of them.
I like having the window computer, because a lot of radio programming software is windows specific, and it is nice to be able swap area specific setups in and out if necessary.
As far as the internal GPS I'm looking at getting a cell card to see if I can get the GPS to come up on it. Seems like any GPS card should work if I remember correctly, but what I like about the external ones are being able to get them up in the air for better reception. I have a slew of them here (GPD modules) I have been testing, including a couple of the ones you have there.
As far as the antenna, there appears to be much cheaper options (with supposed better gain). I'm going to order a few of them and see how they fare.

Nice setup!!! I was just going to say something about a Multi-Port dock/ hub unit (i.e. Targus Hub) so you have more USB Port hookups at your disposal, but you covered it lol.
I use a Powerfilm battery/solar that outputs two USBs and 12v. I has enough to keep my tablet, cell phone and IC 705 going.
I think I'll use this as inspiration for my UAS groundstation. I was considering an ultrabook laptop/tablet thing. But I would like 4Glte support as well as a GPS/compass. The telemetry would go over mavlink bluetooth to my TBS crossfire, which uses 915Mhz FHSS to communicate with the model. And it would record my video feed by using an external capture DVR.
IDK. Maybe custom hardware or a raspberry pi in a box is what I need.

Since you mentioned how hard it is to find an internal GPS for that toughpad, try getting in touch with Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff. They have a CZcams channel and Panasonic is their big go to. Just a recommendation. I'm interested in that same model for a field computer as well.

After reading the comments I’m confused…which for me is normal, just saying. So as a concerned civilian. What can I track and not track with that system? Would it be ALL aircraft, military and civilian and/or drones? Military don’t always transmit during operations. So how does that work? Also I’d love to see a video on how to pickup drone frequencies to be able to track their whereabouts in my AO.
Have you looked at the Omnicharge products at all? I have been using an Omnicharge 20+ for a few years now and it has worked great. It has a variable DC output through a barrel jack so you could do USB-C in -> DC out for whatever device you are using (I believe ~5-25v up to 5A). It is also a battery pack and has 120V AC out which could be used for plenty of things in a pinch up to 100W. It is a bit heavy but not really any heavier than most DC power bricks and provides all kinds of options.

I run a wiped windows surface with dragon os and great great battery life after disabling peripherals like ethernet/internal gps/wifi etc. Purely running the SDR receiver though. I run into the heat issue as well, probably not something anyone will ever get away from
Have soldering skills? Fix the wiggle issues by taking apart your radio and direct wiring it.. I would certainly give that a try.

Have you considered using a steam deck? It's mareketed as a game console 1st however it IS a PC with some serious processing power and battery for its size. I think the only caviot id give is its usbc not regular usb.

100% can confirm, you can run multiple SDR from a splitter to run dedicated SDR, ADS-B, SDRTrunk, and SDR Angel all at the same time.
Thanks for another great video. Would like to see how you intergrate the IC-705 with JS8 Call. I was able to install Plane plotter based on your video decitaded to that which was very helpful. Other videos dont explain it very well and I would like to see how you get JS8 Call running on the 705.
I think you could improve the SWAP. I like the pack, but I believe you could separate the computing end and the display end to minimize your footprint and eliminate weight and heat issues.

So I'd like to live but yesterday I was reminded of how good I am. A woman collapsed in the Bern Train Station and the only two of us was a nurse and a doctor who I had to teach on the spot how to use an AED. The nurse didn't feel her pulse going from strong and powerful almost disappearing. I was the most trained person and there were four cops, a doc, and nurse and it wasn't until the paramedics came ans they weren't as we would have been. Clear the area and get her on a telemetry device. ASAP.

Could you rig up an umbrella for more distance from your body plus it collapses? Maybe remove what you don't need for the height. I bet there's something like a walking stick that extends similar.

Thoughts on the FZ-G1 vs the FZ-M1? I know the M1 is smaller and has less processing power, but are there any benefits of going with a G1 if I’m ok with the larger footprint?
I like toughbook tablets but when you can't upgrade the ram it limits it's capabilities for SIGINT because the more apps you run the slower all the apps run because RAM is often limited to 8 gigs.
After watching some of your videos I just ordered me a RTL SDR. If you have a computer there is no reason not to turn it into a receiver, if not a base station.
Dude that bag is nice! Where did you find it. I have an mcHF radio with a smart phone running PSK31 :) But I will move over to 27Mhz Anytone 40W since most of my friends and milsimmers dont have ham license. The CB radio is a bit clumsy but its simple and gives 40w apr. And i use JS8
