As a former singer, I've damaged my vocal cords more times than I count. His voice sounds like he bruised his vocal cords. It's pretty easy to honestly. It makes your voice lower and raspy. It usually takes me 6 months to a year to go back to normal. One time it took over year after I repeatedly strained my voice talking over loud machinery at work.

Honestly, I agree that it's a little bit goofy that his voice has changed so much from the role, but I'm also not a hundred percent convinced he's faking it. After years of preparing for this role and being on set (keep in mind the film was delayed over Covid as well), and consciously deepening his voice, it could have honestly just become normal. Like anything, if you do it for long enough, your brain will adapt and make it an unconscious habit. And even though his voice certainly wasn't as deep before, you can still hear a little bit of the drawl that he has now in the earlier clip. It's just been heightened. I also think there's something to be said about how people unconsciously change their voice around different people. Idk about guys, but as a girl, I definitely speak in a lower tone when I'm around people I'm comfortable with and in an informal setting, but I will lighten my voice considerably when speaking to somebody older than me or guys that I find attractive. Not necessarily on purpose; it's an unconscious shift. Maybe his voice just finds this deeper tone naturally when he wants to impress someone. Idk, this is a really long comment for absolutely no reason. Sorry for wasting your time defending Austin Butler. I wasted my own too, if it makes you feel better.

Just for the record. Gary Oldman, the British actor, has had a similar experience. In a interview ( Graham Norton) I just watched, he stated between playing American roles, living in America, and his children being born in America he has had difficulty when a part requires an authentic British accent. He stated he needed a voice coach to help him regain his original accent as it had become Americanized. (In particular Certain vowels).
I can understand this. I was born in the south and remained there till I was 9. I had a very thick accent. My family moved north for 5 years. When we came back to the south, I had no accent. Spent an additional 8 years in the south and picked it back up. Married military and moved around a lot. I have no trace of a southern accent now , but have family members that do. I live in Colorado now, but when I call them I can easily slide right back into it without even noticing. Others have to point it out to me.
I really don’t think this is as odd as you think. His deeper tone will probably stay, but the accent will decrease over time. Speaking like a person for 24/7 for two years is bound to have an effect. He has been nominated for best actor for every award that has been announced. I don’t think he cares what his voice sounds like. I know I don’t. He did Elvis proud. That’s what I care about.

Spending time getting into character is very important for the delivery of your role. No doubt Elvis Presley is a very meticulous part to play. And he did it phenomenally. Also, during your time in a certain role, you learning things about yourself, your role teaches you things that help you grow as a person and an actor. When ledger died, he didn’t die as the Joker, but ‘becoming’ the joker had a significant toll on his mental health and led him to make the decisions he did that lead to his death. It’s kinda scary, even if it isn’t what people think.

Technically, all those three years were not dedicated to filming Elvis alone . I'm not sure why he keeps saying that when talking about Elvis. I guess it's a simpler narrative to explain what happened to him. So the whole "not seeing his family for three years" thing went like this (this is what I gathered based off of the timeline of events and Austin interviews/videos):
May 2022 was probably around the time he saw his family again. However, while Austin's main residence is in California, his sister doesn't live in California anymore (he briefly mentions that in the actors on actors interview). I think his dad lives in California, but I'm not sure (He mentioned in the past that his dad doesn't live in the same city as him). Austin also said his grandparents live in another state outside California. With Austin's busy schedule, he already has a hard time visiting his immediate family on the regular (he's been traveling to different states and countries filming different projects during his twenties).
Rewind two years, 2020 was the pandemic. SO MANY PEOPLE DID NOT GET TO SEE THEIR FAMILIES THAT YEAR. I'm tired of people ignoring that HUGE EVENT when Austin brings up not being able to see his family. Austin was in Australia scheduled to film Elvis during 2020. Tom Hanks was also filming Elvis in Australia and soon after, the news broke out that Tom Hanks caught Covid. This happened around early 2020. Australia was one of the few places in the world that put VERY strict curfews and travel restrictions during the pandemic. You couldn't really go in and out of Australia during that time. From what I remember Australia at the time was handling the pandemic better than the U.S. So Austin stayed in Australia for all of 2020. He mentions in the interview that he called and FaceTimed a couple family members and friends, but he mainly focused on getting Elvis right. Going from mostly playing simple, unchallenging teen shows to playing Elvis is not as simple as "just acting". If you receive a job that requires a lot more from you than what you are used to, you have to take it seriously and go above and beyond what is asked of you to achieve exceptional results.
Filming Elvis ended around March 2021, but Austin was hospitalized the day after filming ended. Once he was better, he went straight to London to film Masters of the Air, a show for Apple+. I think that was done filming around early February 2022. He was seen with his dad at the Elvis premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May 2022.
So, it was more like two and a half years (in some interviews Austin would say two years or two and a half years) that he didn't really see his family while he was filming Elvis AND Masters of the Air. I'm not sure why he's inconsistent when mentioning that. Maybe time became a blur to him while filming two huge projects back to back. Sorry this is so long, just wanted to clarify some things before people label Austin as someone who's doing some kind of phony "Jared Leto type" method acting. Also he's been smoking for a while, he put a lot of stress on his voice, and he's 31 Not everyone's voice stays the same as they get older, for example, Elvis' voice changed as he got older and when you hear his music and speaking voice, there is a difference between how he sounded in his early twenties and how he sounded in his late twenties/early thirties. Elvis smoked sometimes as well when he was alive.
Edit: With all that said, I think we should just accept that the ghost of Elvis Presley has possessed Austin Butler and all Elvis wants to do is get a second chance at becoming a serious actor, so he's staying in Austin's body for as long as he can. Austin mentioned that he was open to letting the spirit of Elvis take over him and let Elvis "feel the world again" through Austin. As long as Elvis isn't hurting anybody, I'd say let him do his thing (I say this as a joke btw).

Number one, Elvis is not possessing Austin. Second his grandparents life in AZ. Phoenix I think. 3rd Austin has already made 3 movies since elvis wrapped and I imagine his voice is fine and possibly stretched during Dune. Read Dune if you want to know about Feyd Rautha. Also, Austin had been interviewed at least 30 times since elvis premiered. Talking constantly wears your voice out and makes it scratchy.

One last thing, Austin Butler is an actor whose career depends on him being likable at least from certain perspectives. If people get a negative impression of him due to how he chooses to express himself (mannerisms, tone of voice, giving an "i'm pretending" vibe) when he is presenting as himself and not a character, it will damage his career on the long run as he will be losing potential audiences (cause some people won't like him). Next he was in Once upon a time in Hollywood and his voice was quite low and raspy as Tex Watson. You should check that out. Then he went to Australia and watched tons of elvis documentaries and home movies. That's where the elvis southern voice comes from. For masters he had a voice coach to bring him back From the elvis voice. He had to start masters as soon as he got out of hospital. In parts of the elvis movie, he sounds like elvis I remember. To be fair, it has been about a decade since he was 21 yrs old. There is a TREMENDOUS difference in the tone of my voice from the years 20-30. If you've ever listened to the actual speaking voice of Elvis, you will quickly realize that Austin is speaking actually lower than Elvis Presley did. The other thing I have noticed is that Austin also has a somewhat raspy or smokey sound to his voice that is nowhere to be found in the actual speaking voice of Elvis Presley. I've never seen him speak about this or read anything about it, but I have to wonder if he smokes...or perhaps even starting smoking in an effort to change the sound of his voice. The other thing that I feel like is entirely possible is that in not breaking character for three years and as he admits ....loves Elvis as much as a family member.. in addition sees that he sure has watched his personal cool factor jump substantially when employing Elvis' mannerisms. I don't personally see Austin Butler as still being in character for Elvis, but it makes sense to me that to go out of his way to figure out how to pull some sort of reversal to get back to being high speaking CW heartthrob would be the goofiest shit of all.
Elvis spoke and dressed the way he did by emulating others borrowing this from here and this from other there and he became a super cool mfr.
I say let all the negativity go in one ear and out the other Austin.
