Why Antarctica Depends on This Little Creature I Climate Heroes

    Antarctica is best known for whales, penguins, and seals, but this vast and fragile ecosystem depends on a far smaller resident: krill. Around 400 million tons live in the Southern Ocean, where they provide a valuable food source and remove damaging CO2 from the atmosphere.
    Despite their huge numbers, krill are at risk: from climate change and a rapidly expanding fishing industry. Why have humans spent decades harvesting them? What do omega 3 capsules have to do with it? How did one special krill teach science about their importance? And what might the decline of these small crustaceans do to our planet?

    The thing i love about this channel is it provides viable solutions to seemingly difficult to solve problems caused due to human needs without making the people look like the bad guys, rather focusing on bringing awareness to the problem and providing solutions that is basically a win win for both the people and the ecosystem.
    This channel proves that any human activity if done responsibly and without greed, we can coexist with our ecosystem.

The high DHA algae we currently have are one of the most efficient oil crops per unit area currently in existence, and we are talking about a level of demand that amounts to less than a tablespoon per person, unlike the world's oceans we are only needing to grow the varieties of algae that produce high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, and our systems aren't iron limited or at risk of being destroyed by algae blooms which allows for substantially higher production.

Those Krill pods form because of massive loads of whale scat that is rich in the iron they need. It's insane the amount of sea life captured or harmed everyday, and at such a huge scale it's so hard to moderate and prevent people from overfishing or fishing in illegal areas. But there's just no other way, it's not at all sustainable, and on top of that we're damaging our biggest buffer against rising CO2 and climate change. I think Humans need to observe Nature & adapt our modern society/economy to it's structure. I look at it like as if you were observing Nature and you saw a ecosystem. Then you noticed that all the lowest members of the food chain were in terrible shape BUT the sharks, bears, whales, lions, wolf's, didn't really care at first and then the entire ecosystem fell apart around them. The global ecosystem would catastrophically fall apart because the smallest things in the food chain are key parts of the global ecosystem to function. Without them flourishing, so many things are effected, even the whales would not have any krill, zooplankton, phytoplankton, etc. to live off of. It would be a devastating chain effect to every other animal that relies on smaller things to exist in order for them to function. ~So~ (transfer this analogy over to human society/economy)
    (Imagine a Bank 🏦🏧 okay 👍, say it's the best Bank, well now imagine how great a bank would be if all it's clients stopped being able to bring in $. So they don't have money to hold? Then everyone would pull their money out. So how much does the bank help the people? OR does THE PEOPLE HELP THE BANK? Yet which thing gets government assistance bail outs from the government to keep them from going poor? ) I truly believe we need to invest in the lowest income people in order for our society to flourish. It's really not asking much. It's just asking for a basic right that will keep the economic system healthy, keep tons of families from going homeless. I mean governments will spend money regardless, and it will be way more expensive, way harder to fix, if we let it get so bad that tons of peoples families fall apart with no safety net and then it's so much harder to ever rebuild yourself back up from there. Plus it's not good for the economy so why not just make a system of helping (just the lowest level living people) rather then having tons of societal problems just because government politics doesn't want to help the poor but wants to invest everything in the rich... ~But the rich NEEDS THE POOR, do they not understand that? Any investment in the poor will only come back around to help other avenues in the economic ecosystem and overall health and stability of our society.
    (Personally, that's my idea on how I think we should approach our modern day society. Even low income people deserve basic aspects to their qualities of life.)
    *{It's actually pretty crazy that good people, active, working people, are struggling so much just to barely get by. It should be a sign that our system needs improving. So people can have a safe place to sleep, at least. Poor people, low income people should be able to feel like they can exist too. Instead of this current situation where society seems to just demand and assume everyone is financially well off. When in reality a huge % of the population is considered Low income.}

    It‘s a bit depressing that humans must stick their fingers everywhere and even mess with something as „small“ as Krill. It is time to just leave animals alone, let them do their thing and take on an observing role! Just watch and marvel at how awesome animals are, instead of bothering, killing and eating them.
    Happy animals means happy planet.

    It's funny how such a small, relatively unknown animal (to the world population) is so important to our planet. If ur reading this and ur not subscribed just subscribe so Terra Mater can get their message out there. They seriously make great videos. I've been subbed for a while, one of the first 10,000 and they have never disappointed me.

    These extremophiles are most likely to be the only ones to survive on Earth when the next asteroid or meteorite hits! They’ll hang back fertilizing our oceans. Amazing little guys. Pompeii worm and Picrophilus torridus (a thermoacidophile adapted to hot, acidic conditions), will be around with them. Wooohooo

    There is a pretty good vegetarian alternative called Flaxseed but people won't buy that!

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 Před rokem

      Flaxseed is a great source of ALA, and although we technically can turn ALA into the longer chain omega 3 fatty acids like EPA and DHA we aren't very efficient at it. There do appear to be more health benefits associated with consuming pre-formed long chain omega 3 fatty acids. Algae oil contains the long chain omega 3 fatty acids and is still a more sustainable and ethical option.

      @@xordux7 You can find non animal derived vitamin D3. I would recommend using vegan as one of the keywords when searching for it.
