- I'm about half way through my challenge to brew 99 beers in 99 weeks, so it's time to reflect on our favorite beers so far with resident beer taster Lauren. And Lauren participates in her first ever brew day to make an American Pale Ale (APA).

Lauren's comments throughout had me cracking up! Loved seeing her get involved during the brew day.
I alway love it when someone new joins the homebrew hobby. And so often it‘s by tasting other homebrews. Really enjoyable video!!!
One of my favorite channels with definitely my favorite guest. Thanks both for a great episode. Regards from Ireland
Yeah, more Lauren! Martin your channel is fantastic, keep up the great work.
I've been really looking forward to this beer style, good to see Lauren mucking in on brew day too! Cracking video, cheers Martin!
Great series Martin! I enjoy learning about beer styles and new techniques/ equipment each week.
One of my favorite episodes!
Thanks again for these fine videos Martin. It was great to see Lauren helping with brew day!
Thank you!
I cant believe I missed this when it came out. I am normally a early commenter! This is one of the better episodes because of Lauren's comments. Loved the vid, keep em coming.
Best idea for a show to date. Great trip down memory lane. I officially christen this beer “Memory Lane Pale Ale”... close second is “Bubble Bath”
Bravo to Lauren!
The duo definitely works! Nice lighthearted episode. Nice one guys 👍
"What was your favourite British beer?"
"Irish red ale"
**800 years of opression: Am I joke to you?**
Jokes aside, great video Martin, good to see another person in the video for you to have a bit of craic with
Oh my gosh. 🤣
Neither of us caught on to that.
Maybe it's because I'm mainly Irish and I got confused hahah But either way 🤦♀️
Might be my favorite episode so far! I also love a little Victory in an APA or IPA.
Congrats on the halfway point! Very great work.
hope you involve lauren more. it's good to see a novice involved they can ask some really interesting questions :)
I really like this series 😊
Superb video! Congrats!
I agree with Lauren....redo the rauchbier with a more subtle amount of smoked malt (and use beechwood smoked malt). My wife and I went to Bamberg (the home of Rauchbier) a while ago and, even though she's not a beer drinker, that was her favourite and she keeps nagging me to brew one.
My fav style! I noticed the audio channels were reversed in the dialogue at the beginning.
so nice of you to respond
Now i have a new relationship goal. Great job Lauren, Cheers from Iceland
Mr. Keen before I started the whole beer nerd life I have embraced I would have said that Tuesdays were my least favourite days. But now it's my absolute favourite day of the week. I love to brew German and Belgian beer styles and now we are entering the styles that I am very unsure on how to brew. It's going to be just amazing learning from you
Thank you! My favorite styles are the Belgian beers too - can’t wait to get to those.
Love the videos, keep up the good work! For your APA, did you leave it in the fermenter or did you keg age for the 4 weeks?
You need to re-do the smoke beer, it’s a great style when done well.
Looking to make rauchbier. Do you have any kind of recipe that works well?
@@milosdangubic4628 www.homebrewersassociation.org/homebrew-recipe/slightly-smoked-helles/, I have not brewed it yet, but it is on deck for the summer. I just brewed a Kolsch, so this is next up.
Big thumds up to Lauren for wanting you to rebrew the smokebeer that didn't turn out to well she's definitely a keeper
great vid mate, apa is prob my fave light style
This is my favourite style for sure. Now let me watch the video :D
Man! I've watched alot of your videos and always thought "how is he using a clawhammer in the UK".... Then it dawned on me... You're in the USA....
Huge fan of the channel. Greeting from the UK.
Thanks!
Love your channel Martin very professional. APA was my first Ag beer too. Greeting from a fellow expat in Australia. Good effort.
Tom
Thank you!
Gday Martin, loving your videos. What programme do you use for your water calculations? And how come you don't sparge?
What a great episode, you could tell she enjoyed the visit to the Brewery! I think my favorite (that I want to try) was the Tropical Stout. As for Rauchbier, you may want to break down and buy some bottles of Schlenkerla's Marzen and Helles. I had a similar experience, our local Biergarten made some rauchbeir, and when I asked for some, they said "why don't you try a sample first". Needless to say, I didn't order the full glass. Since then, (i.e. drinking some from Germany) rauchbier is one of my favorites.
Thanks, will look for these. There must be a smoke beer somewhere that I'll like :)
Wanderson/Brasil . Adoro suas receitas
Hi Martin, I brewed this recipe in my Brewzilla, it turned out yo be a nice brew, substituted yeast with the Llalbrew Bryant-97 dry yeast. I will definitely do this one again
Great videos and help for someone like me who is only new to home brewing .... thanks and keep the videos coming
Thanks Shane
I brewed a Rauch with 17% cherry smoke malt. I hated it to start with. I gave it a couple months and now I really enjoy it. I know you said .17% is still too much, but if you do muster up the courage to use smoked malt again: go for 10%, and let it sit for a couple months, it might surprise you. BTW, my wife sat in with me for the first time on my latest brew, at least for part of it. To be fair it was a triple decoction dopplebock and even I was getting pretty weary towards the end. Maybe I can convince her to brew an easy one like this APA later. Cheers!
Less pale, more ale! 🍻
Do you add boiled water to your wort afterwards (off camera) or am I just imagining that there are not 5-6.5 gallons in your pot when you do your mash and wort? Great content as always mate. Finally drank my first brew a week ago (IPA) it came out great, I was very nervous I had screwed something along the way, beginner's fears I guess.
I have a customer who uses 50% or more smoked malt in his recipe!!! Can't even fathom that.
Oooh no, not for me!
I like your channel thanks for sharing. A couple of comments, 1st you can mix your smoke beer with a another to tame it and I age all my beers 2mths min and find all beers improve with age. That's why I have 3 kegs and will bottle 3 ltr each batch for taste test fun
Yes mixing up that smoke bomb I made with something a little more palatable would have been a good idea. Aging beers for 2 months would be good if I was more organized in brewing them way in advance of their YT publish date :)
I hope you publish a recipe book, your recipes are top notch!
Thanks!
I have to agree on having another go at the Rauchbier. The smoke can add a really interesting element when done with, *ahem*... Restraint.
I remember while watching that episode thinking "He's using *how much* smoked malt!? He's going to hate this beer!" 😂😂
LOL
That beer really attenuated. That northwest ale yeast must be efficient.
Great series, been binging to catch up. Looking forward to the rest 👍
Is Tropical IPA on the list, one of my favourites?
Thank you. It is not, but boy Tropical IPA sounds good!
@@TheHomebrewChallenge That's a shame. Check out Tiny Rebel Clwb Tropica or Brewdog Clockwork Tangerine 😀🍻
Martin, I pay particular attention to the equipment and recipes you use in making the different beers. The Clawhammer kettle and basket. Is there much difference, in function, than the BIAB process. I recognize that the Clawhammer system you are using is electric? But heat applied to water and grain is the same. You are just using a basket instead of a bag. I am trying to decide which route to go and really do not want to spend money unnecessarily. At least initially. Thanks. I throughly enjoy all of your videos and anxiously await each one.
Hey Martin, great video as always. Question here from a fellow ex-pat: When you put in the description Aged for 4 weeks, is that 4 weeks in the fermenter or is that split between fermenter and keg carbonating?
It’s the time from brew day to tasting.
Please attach to your recipes the water target profile if possible. ty
I love watching this channel Martin.
Quick question. Your recipe says caramel/crystal malt. Would that be crystal 10?
Thank you. That should say Caramel 20.
can you make a west coast ipa recipe ? thanks
is there a problem if i carbonate a fermenter with a tilt hydrometer inside?
hello! Where you bought this whisk?
did u do dry hop? I could not see dry hop in video :/
Whats your method on keeping off the weight while drinking all this beer?
any downside to a 30 minute boil compared to the standard 60?
hi sir ,, greetings from Peru , sorry american pale ale need a dry hop , 'cause a have a recipe with 3 days dry hopp , i make my own home beer in house , how is proper in this step i can 't contamineted the beer or shom some videos about it thanks so much
I've never noticed Lauren's accent before. Is she from the isles as well, or has your accent rubbed off?
Yep she’s originally from 🇬🇧
Are you happy with the clawhammer system? I was thinking about getting one.
Yeah has served me well.
Thanks to you im currantly brewing my very first beer! Thanks for inspiring me. One question i do have though: Whats the equipement youre using? I want to get a all in one system the way you have it, but i have no clue which ones are good
He's using the Clawhammer supply all in one. They are really good but can be pricey and (for me at least) difficult to get as I'm outside the US. A lot of the all in ones work on similar principles; it's good to be enthusiastic but it's a big investment which really just streamlines your process rather than dramatically changing the final beer. I use the brewzilla. In the US I believe the anvil foundry is one of the best budget options available.
@@ubermensch3000 where are you from? Ive been looking for something just like the clawhammer (maybe a bit cheaper ;) ) but for europe. So far i have not realy been sucessfull
@@asdf-y2c yeah I live in UK and had to order the robobrew/brewzilla in advance as limited supply, its a very good system and available all over the place and is very competitively priced. Best bet if you are brand new would be getting in touch with a homebrew store if there is one near you and finding out what is available. For 'Brew in a Bag' (BIAB) which I did for the last 5 years before upgrading to an all in one, I think you could do a lot worse than just sourcing a huge pot (say 35L) with a tap on the bottom and starting from there. Some shops (there are a few in the UK) sell electric pots with the heating element installed if you are worried about how to boil 20-23L in a kitchen.
@@ubermensch3000 thanks a lot. Yeah ive been brewing 5l batches in a bag so far and want to upgrade to 10l. I will have a look at your recomendations
@@asdf-y2c good luck with everything! My old method was fairly convoluted but worked very well on a stove top. With a bag and mashing about 3.5kg of grain in 10L of water you could easily hit a very decent OG in 10L (topping off with cold water at the end into the fermenter to make the full volume). Some of these systems have a bit of dead space in the bottom so they work best doing upwards of 12L batches, I'm thinking of trying some small batch stuff too but I think for 10L doing it on the stove top is still very manageable. You could also check out the apartment brewer on youtube for info on how to do large batches in a smaller space, and David heath on youtube also has great videos comparing and reviewing all in one systems. Happy brewing :)
I'm a newcomer to homebrew so be kind to me :)
I notice that you altered the PH before adding the grain. Can you tell me why you did this? I was under the impression that you alter the PH after mash as the grain will naturally change the chemistry?
Software can be used to predict mash pH. For those of use without a pH meter adjusting before or after adding the grain makes no difference. We just trust the software to get it right.
Is Lauren NC native😊
No DH?
I think that you are above the APA bitterness scale.
If I could have something inbetween an English and an American Pale Ale, that would be great
xander10 How about an Australian Pale Ale? 😬
@@chrisz8532 not so hot about aussie beers tbh
This man loves some carapils.
Mash at 156-158 and drop the carapils.
Todas as receitas, são ´para 5 Gallons ( 19 litros) ????

Oops you forgot the u. Favourite. There you go.
SIXPENCE FINE!!!
Lauren sounds American.
Lauren is Martins wife? I’m not getting the affiliation
Is Lauren his GF? wife?
Awkward. 😅 No. Martin is my step dad.
So are you dating the pretty lady yet? 😊
IPA's are almost in sight! Great video Martin and great to recap on all the beers you've brewed.
