Institute doesn't matter that much. You would think that getting there marks new chapter of the story, new act, many hours of gameplay, but then it's unlocks just couple missions and end of a game. Mike reinforces that illusion that institute matters anything

The Fallout 4 assault rifle is like if you got somebody who doesn't know anything about guns to design a gun. That thing is especially egregious when the AR platform is canon.
It's so funny in a bad way that they went from the R91 and Chinese ARs from FO3 to making the abomination in FO4. Lol They literally had perfectly good designs to work off of and chose to do everything BUT actually make something sensible

Don't know why they didn't include them in any of the DLC though, unless you count the handmade rifle in Nuka World.
It's worse when you recall Fallout 3 had three ARs that don't look like horrid scrap. And Bethesda clearly agreed, since both Far Harbor and Nuka World give indefinitely better-looking options.

I find it funny Zac is roleplaying as this enlave solider then he break the roleplay to talk bad about the AR of Fallout 4 that really funny.
They seem to be converging recently, as he started out this save praising laser weapons, now he's tossed them entirely in favour of ballistics :P

"Assault Rifle" was a last minute name change and it was originally supposed to be chambered in .50 cal. The OG AR from the previous games was removed to make the game marketable in multiple countries. Similar to why the Handmade Rifle from Nuka World, is not called an AK-47.
Basically it's because of legal red tape and time constraints.
The model for the Chinese Assault Rifle was also found in the game's data, so that gun was probably still planned to come back.
Also the AR was initially made for power armor, and was meant to be a machine gun. The problem was that this gun was made so early into the game’s development that the decision to have the current gun customization concept wasn’t in place yet, and this was suppose to be a heavy most likely belt fed machine gun designed for power armor use only. Then they decided that instead of having a bunch of base weapons that had minimal customization they wanted a handful of base weapons with a lot of customization. Because of this their already made machine gun was tweaked a bit and made into the assault rifle.
Time to see if the General has noticed Mike yet, or if Zach has realized that at this point he is high enough rank to be promoting him. I'm gonna guess not though, I think Zach enjoys Mike's suffering in the lower ranks.
In my head cannon Zach approved Mike becoming a Warrant Officer by gauging his proficiency at water purification via asking random textbook questions neither of them truly understood.

We need Zack to play SD Gundam Battle Alliance. Just so Mike is a Haro in denial being one. Also so he can gush about the Gusion's 30cm smoothbore gun. Or the GM Sniper 2 Springfield rifle looking beam gun.

@@barrybend7189 It's a shell-firing weapon, as the other guy said. In a few games the EF-KAR98K has been incorrectly shown as a beam rifle. There's also a shell firing rifle that's basically scaled up PSG-1, but we only see it in a cut scene of Zeonic Front, so it's well into the zone of Apocrypha for now. The BLASH XBR-X-79YK is the most commonly depicted beam sniper rifle and might be the one you're actually thinking of. That's the one we see in 08th MS Team in the last couple episodes and in Rise from the Ashes in the hands of the White Dingo's GM Sniper II, the one with a very M16 styled front sight and the huge scope that looks like it's inspired by those huge Starlight night scopes from the Vietnam War.
This mod gives the player something that I felt the DLCs were missing: You get all of these new factions, with their own tech people, and not a single one offers itself for helping you finish the main game's story. Even though some (like Acadia) have good reason to hate the Institute. But the Enclave of all people decides to help.
For more nonsense, the suppressor model for the Assault Rifle has "CAL .50" written on it, which is not something the weapon can fire.

@@Arum638 so making it so the supressor does not have the decals but enabling the caliber conversion kit into 50. cal and .308 and 5mm could work

You know what, I use Dak's assault rifle replacer. Ain't perfect, but at least the replacer looks more like a gun AND still sticks to the idea of mixing various machinegun parts together.

Another idea for the assault rifle could be to make an upgraded BAR style rifle as the lmg/ close in weapon for the power armor troops.
Ive been saying this for years, but for being "one of the last few intelligent advanced factions left in the wasteland, the institute sure is dumb".
They could easily use this tech they have to make the wasteland (or atleast boston) a better place.
But no, they want to be doing shit in the shadows trying to take over boston by replacing its citizens with synths.
Just the fact that you can upload your consciousness into a synth body is already incredible technology.
You can basically become immortal, just upload your mind intoa new synth body every few years.
Just imagine what the enclave can do with that kind of tech.
If we had the kind of Technology the Institute had, we could... uh... terraform the Glowing Sea itself to it's Pre-War Days!
Clearly they all have a superiority Complex ever since the CPG fell due to infighting and because of that they think they should be the sole Rule the Commonwealth, supressing any rebellion or War by shutting anyone down through Force to make a perfect "Utopia". Obviously they lack the Knowledge of an actual functioning Goverment like our glorious Enclave!

I didn't realize the mod was a full on main faction addition since they have their own main quest and even their excuse to enter the institute bit.

even as a Machine Gun, that sucks. I would make it so that it is an Atompunk version of the M247, a Watercooled Machine Gun, Dieselpunk Machinegun and Makeshift LMG as OPTIONS versus the FO4MG.
I will give the designers credit on the fallout TV show to where they made it better proportioned for the power armor users, and depicting it as this heavy machine gun like it’s SUPPOSED to be.
Still made it side magazine fed for some reason. My guess is that they confused the M249’s magazine well with the MG42’s belt drum thinking that the MG42 had a magazine adaptor, as the weapon makes slightly more sense with the drum magazine attached instead of the stick mag
My guess is that they made it a magazine because it's one of the parts that can be swapped out
I was thinking that holster didn't make sense during a previous episode, then figured I was probably overthinking it and Zach would've said something.

1:20 I can explain this. The end of his left collar is sewn to the end of his right one which is sewn to his coat (that's HIS left and right, not the viewers'). However only the edges of the collars at that intersection point are sewn into the coat, meaning you can thread the holster strap through that spot. It is actually continuing up and around his right shoulder. The collar in its entirety isn't firmly against the coat with stitching. You can lift them up like flaps.

5:06.they could have made something like the MG-206 HMG from Helldivers 2; it's a tiny .50 cal HMG with 75 round belt box mags and a shoulder stock.
I hate to point this out but I think the "latch that's about to fall off" is the switch/mechanism to extend the stock. Also 10:19 that gas tube? I guess it really isn't necessarily
I would love for Zach to play around with the Assault Rifle, modifying it, to make it as best as it could be with vanilla modifications.
There is a mod for the assault rifle no clue if it was finished or not, but I saw a video on it in the early stages where the mod's purpose is to basically remaster the assault rifle. Extremely customizable with some questionable addons and even options to make the regular one an option in the weapon mods. But that one from what I remember is even more of a mish mash than the current one is, the main difference being it's not bulky af.

Really cool Mike and Zack this goes with the main character in the story to go into the Institute but I do like the American Rising 2 gives you more of a different play out
Believe me, the Mod gives you a quite interesting Option for the Institute that may or may not drastically affect the Commonwealth unlike the Canon Endings.
On the Xbox version I have the original American Rising so I only had like one option basically take out the Brotherhood and I have to use the Minutemen with their ending mission to take out the Brotherhood
With your character part of the US Army and also your wife being a part of the enclave it takes back a lot of what you originally had

When i comes to the assault rifle if i remember correct it was going to be a machine gun in lore for power armour the game was supposed to have a more traditional assault rifle but it got cut before release.
There some good alternative Plasma gun mods on the Nexus: The X-12 Plasma Caster for someone who wants a more 1980-1990s Scifi design, and the Accelerator Plasma Energy weapon for those who want the modularity of the vanilla plasma guns but better aesthetics. It can go from pistol > smg> rifle> assault rifle> plasma cannon.

Working on weapons was the one part of Army life I enjoyed.
Probably why I didnt get in too much trouble since everyone in the Brigade knew I was good at that and anything brought in would get turned round as fast as possible.

Because the muzzle is set so far forward on it the lewis cooling ststem is just acting as a giant heatsink. The lewis had a recessed muzzle in real life because as it fired it would push air forwards out the end sucking in cooler air through the finstack.
The side magazine offers easier reloading when using power armor.

I mean... finding Blueprints for a Relay that transports ya' into the Institute ain't probably easy to find. Unless they leave it somewhere lying around then we might've spend Ages to find a Clue.
Though... that does make me perhaps a little suspicous of Mike since... how did he get Blueprints from the Institute? If there ain't a rouge Scientist from the Institute around the Commonwealth that gave him these then the Institute themselves must've left it for him or gave it to him directly. Not trying to state the obvious, but are you certain that "Mike" is truly himself still and not a Synth?
EH-- I'm probably jumping to Conclusions I mean-- ... they couldn't have replicated him so perfectly right? Even if he's a Snyth, he might be one of those defective or rouge Ones since they probably wouldn't want him to give you access to their scientific Facility. Also let me confirm something you suspected about the "Assault "Rifle", it is infact designed to be a Machine Gun! Sadly, some Idiot in the Pre-War Army accidentally send the actual Assault Rifles for the Army in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and desperatly tried to rename the Machine Guns to "Assault Rifles" to hide that fatal accident. Guess how far he came with that Lie?
Anyway... because of that most People call it a "Assault Rifle" mostly because they are incompetent, potentially inbred and slightly mutated Idiots since they don't actually know Guns.
(Fun Fact: this is correct! Bethesda rushed FO4 a lot and thus didn't have the time to finish the (Chinese) Assault Rifle, so they just slapped the Name on the Machine Gun for Power Armor Units)
But anyhow... good Choice for getting Myers to do this, since he runs two Reactors and an entire Oil Rig! This sort of top technological Stuff is like Childs Play for him, atleast I think so.
Now about what happened before the General talked to you after building the Relay, let's just say there might be some internal Conflict going on due to the FEV Plan we are reusing yet again.
Colonel Whitehill (who I believe to be in the right) doesn't want the Senator or the General to use the Plan due to some rising Problems in the Plan, mostly due to the Fact it might infect Enclave Personal that had been affected by short Doses of Radiation. Personally it is a horrible Plan as most of the Enclave had been exposed to Radiation when the Oil RIg on the West Coast blew up.
Plus... come on, this is the third Time someone in Higher Ranks tried to use FEV! Can't we get any New Plans that may or may not cause mass Genocide at a potentially world-wide Level?!
Aside from those News, I don't have any Tips or Updates for your Mission in the Institute due to the Fact we don't we don't know a lot about them. I guess you can just hope they don't shoot ya!
On the generals holster the only way it could make sense is of there is a slit cut into the uniform to allow the strap to pass through. I hope this helps Zach's ocd.

I'm doing a vanilla playthrough of FO4 for the achievements. The game has been generous with legendaries for me. Got an explosive combat shotgun at level 12 off a mirelurk and a twoshot pipe revolver I modded into a rifle for Nick.
That said I was also given an explosive assault rifle and a bleeding assault rifle. Both very good weapons. I just hate the look of the assault rifle and have since launch. I'm so happy for videos like this and yaboybrandyboy that give me catharsis.

From what I read they tried to design a gun that would look good for power armour. Maybe if Bethesda made the gun have weight so that you could only lift it in power armour and then gave it superior penetrating and damage stats it would be better.

One theory I've heard about the design of the 'assault rifle' in Fallout 4, is that it's supposed to be a squad assault weapon, which is yes, a light machine gun. The reason it uses magazines though, is due to the developers having to make an engine decision. More specifically, the game engine that Bethesda uses for Fallout, doesn't handle things like chains, or in this case, ammunition belts well.

The mismatch of cooling methods present in the assault rifle design is to keep the miniature sun inside each gun from going supernova, trust me I’m a scientist.

The only way I can see this gun making any kind of sense is if it was a unique gun. A gun that someone made out of the only parts they had available and they just barely made it functional. Like the pipe weapons conceptionally but this would've been its 'unique' variant.
Gunpla are great. Rub off decals I just tap to the spot and rub it super good. Water slides suck when they are massive or long.

The whole reason why is that they got lazy because of the file it said that this was supposed to be used as a machine gun but they decided not to add the AK that they were going to and just made the machine gun into an assault rifle

Here's my theory on this damn gun it was most likely either a simple heavy rifle or automatic one underwater we know that they were supposed to be rad squids in the game with the whole vaults for being the experiment.

any tech that says "i keep a 200 year old oilrig afloat and maintain 2 'NUCULAR' reactors"... thats definitly someone i would trust with maintaining my toaster and stuff... but not so much a maschine that could kill me! XD (and yes a toaster could aswell to be fair, but its far less likely an instructions typo would mess up things on a critical level)
Another potential avenue for the "assault rifle" could have been to basically just make a super chunky BAR, perhaps in .50 BMG. Then, you've got the full auto functional, high damage, high recoil weapon that can only be used by someone in power armor, and still fills the same doctrinal role as an assault rifle
@@Arum638 The M2 is not the BAR. Though they should have included the M2 in FO4, it's just such an iconic weapon for the US military

One of the things I liked about the show is that it, at least looked like, they made the assault rifle much bigger and really only useable by power armor or as a stationary weapon. Still a sin against John Moses Browning.

I can only assume the Assault Rifle is the result of no one at Bethesda actually ever having seen or used a gun, but only been given a vauge description of what it looks like and been handed a bunch of random "gun" pictures off google.

Having never played this myself, I never thought that it would've been a full on fifth faction to do the main story with. Sounds like you might be able to actually influence the Enclave's future in a meaningful way instead of just following where the story takes you
once again it's supposed to have a drum and it's chambered in .50 cal that was scrapped when they couldn't get the models for the g3 or the ak to have enough mods so the combat rifle was added it's filling gaps and it got lost

Zach the answer to your question of why the fallout 4 "assault rifle"was designed like this is two reasons one to make it look cool because this is an alternate future and two Bethesda and Todd Howard do not understand how guns (shotguns especially)work.

Fallout 5 but the Fallout 4/76 Assault Rifle is called a machine gun & the assault rifle is the Service Rifle from New Vegas. Also that tube being for the gases infuriates me since what's the point of having it do that instead of designing it like an AK where the gas piston is on top?
it's a mg08/15 German World War One light machine gun. in idea at least. and the browning automatic rifle probably should have been belt-fed.

Hence why in the show it's bigger than in game.

So this would be my head canon for the vanilla "Assault Rifle" I think it was a prototype for National Guard Forces and its not a Assault Rifle its a LMG so you are very much right Zak and the reason why there's so many in Boston is probably cause they were doing field tests to see how well it works in actual combat and all that, but the great war happened and people thought "Oh hey free guns, we don't care if it looks weird as hell and it probably is a bitch to fix but FREE GUN to shoot people with"
One of the common theories I've seen is that it whoever stole the "Backtalker" gun from the Museum of Technology in 3 used it as a base to make a bunch of guns using scrap metal.
