Maggie Rogers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Stephen Thompson | August 7, 2017 -- Maggie Rogers became a viral star on the strength of a video in which Pharrell Williams raves about a demo of what's become her signature song, "Alaska." Since then, Rogers has signed a label deal, toured extensively and released a sweetly approachable, inventively arranged EP called Now That The Light Is Fading.
For her Tiny Desk debut, Rogers performed all three of the EP's best-known songs, opening with the recent singles "On + Off" and "Dog Years," the latter of which she calls "a song for all the pups." Then, after dismissing her band, she treated us to a few warm words about public radio before introducing "Alaska" - a song whose buoyantly clever arrangement translates beautifully to the solo acoustic treatment she gives it here. She needn't have buttered us up; we were already all in.
Now That The Light Is Fading is available now.

wish it weren't only for US residents though
I missed it again.
Ask Pvris or Sincere Engineer to play, or even bring back Becca and her UK band MARMOZETS( roadrunner records)
How about Jack Savoretti? I am sure it will be an amazing Tiny Desk concert!!
I lost my wife and pup this fall in a car accident - Maggie, I ended up on this video one night out of the blue. You gave me a second wind to keep going and not give up, so please know that you're inspirational.
You got this.
dsroaddogg I’m very sorry for your loss. truly. It hurts to hear. Keep on trucking brother, we are all here to laugh love bleed and cry together
Head up, brother. There's so much beautiful art you have left to discover, if this stuff helps you! Sending love from somewhere else in the world!
love and light to you.
🧡❤❤❤❤❤❤
Anyone else ever realize that that is actually a pretty big desk.
hahaha
BTW the desk in question would be the audio desk/ console/ mixer. Not a ton of inputs= stripped down instrumentation or creative mic technique
It's more of a big desk tiny concert. But I don't think it's saying tiny desk. It's saying desk concert that's tiny. The concert is tiny. It's tiny, DESK CONCERT :)
Holy shit
Nah, it’s a Tiny Ass Desk™️
She literally looks like a Glossier ad
i was thinking the same!!! so dewy.
I was thinking Drew Barrymore!
She is so beautiful!
@@trevordunn6968 Dew Barrymore
@@sidolanters1394 this is incredibly underrated and im angry about it
Maggie for tiny desk in 2024 please!!
This is a person who has found herself
And is continuing to do so
And in doing so helps others to find themselves, myself blissfully included 😊❤
Her charisma is somewhere between chill and pure joy.
well said
One Alaskan Luna Lovegood
This makes absolutely no sense
I don't think you know what charisma means...
Eddie Whelan lmao I had exactly the same reaction
Her voice makes me feel like I’m a bird swimming in the sky; a fish flying in the ocean. So bright, so light.
That is beautiful
This a lil Wayne reference? lol
Isn’t she amazing? I can’t get enough of her voice it just goes right through ya
Can I have year dealers number?
Whoever mixed this audio deserves a spot in heaven. This is simply beautiful

The real hero here!
Couldn't agree more
Little easter egg / nugget for the viewers here that I haven't seen mentioned in the video or any of its comments: the book on the table next to Maggie Rogers titled "Meet Me in the Bathroom" is a compilation of interviews released by music journalist Lizzy Goodman.
Maggie Rogers her freshman year at NYU interned for Goodman, and its Maggie Rogers herself that transcribed most of these interviews for Goodman so that the book could be made. Guess it all comes full circle after a while.
Matthew Gross - epic connection
That's... Wow!
God is good
easter nugget?
Whoa that’s amazing

I moved to Alaska for veterinary medical school 2 years ago, all alone, leaving everyone I love in New York City, and this song kept coming up in my automatically generated CZcams playlists. It sounded so familiar to me, and I realized it was a song my best friend used to play all the time when I was at his apartment. But I never knew the name, because she never says it in the song. One day this fall I was walking through the forest, super recently after moving back to Alaska, ecstatic to be following my dreams but so deeply missing everyone I love, jamming out to this and I finally had the foresight to actually look up the name of this song that I love so much. When I saw that it was called Alaska I started crying
what a beutiful moment
Wow. Loves me some synchronicity!
Wow, how beautiful
This just gave me chills omg.
awww she sounds so nervous when she talked but sang so confidently
Haha it's great, love that
This version of On+Off is so much better and pure beauty
Welcome to NPR Music :D
I would love to see Maggie perform live. She is so real, raw, and talented.
I teared up the second it started playing tbh
probably the best version
chuchuchuchia I agree. It’s the guitar.
She's said that growing up, she could only find guys to play with, and she never felt included or heard when playing with them, so she started making tracks on her own. It made me smile when the chorus hit and showed her in front of a band of guys playing her song.
Gosh I can relate to that, have been frustrated when men overpower and dominate musically and also sometimes in conversations. Am sure not all do of course but it happened enough times that I have some frustration about it.
such a difference between her singing and talking voice
Same with Phoebe Bridgers.
I think its weird when people have the same singing and speaking voice. Alicia keys is an example.
Shes like the love child of Stevie nicks and drew berrymore
Stevie nicks and Carole king
Christie Brinkley + Gwyneth Paltrow
Carol King & Joni Mitchell's BaeBee! 🍼
Listening to Maggie’s music is a spiritual experience.
Very Nicely Put
When she opened her eyes after On + Off, it looked like she was genuinely surprised to be back on earth. Where do you go off to when you close your eyes Maggie?
Anchorage. prolly?
they were closed for like 3 seconds...
one goes to that place...
00:19
I love this. I often wonder the same.
“This is a song about, coming back into your body.. Yeah, okay”
This woman is so herself, so pure. A true treasure
She has an amazing falsetto.
"for the pups" i'm crying
I didn't get why she said that, although I thought it was cute, and then she started singing Dog Years and I as like: OMG awwww. What a precious girl
AwAh don't ever have to see or hear from you again and I don't listen to Eminem either and I don't know you anymore , I'm so glad!!
Singin' "Ooooh" because when dogs howl they're actually singing.
She has a chocolate lab that was on the set of her Alaska video. I adore her.
Interesting how her voice is what ties the band together . you can even watch the drummer using her voice to keep in sync rather than his drumming to keep the band on beat.
The drummer is supposed to follow the singer and other musicians follow the drummer.
This version of Alaska is straight fire. She’s such a great live performer
"this is a song about coming back into your body". alaska has been on repeat for me the last few months, it's so wonderful to hear this stripped down, raw version. I cried big fat tears. I know it's time for me to come back into my body. it's just so hard to move forward.
You’ll do it so gradually you won’t realize it’s happening. You’ll just find yourself ahead of where you were before. It’ll be a lovely surprise.
her bandmates slowly get more hair from left to right
Hannah Lipka this made my day
Ha! Their shirts also go from dark to light.
Omg 😂😂😂
Hannah Lipka AT&T more bars in more places
brilliant
Man, I wanna hear Maggie harmonize with Phoebe.
Yes please. Maybe even with all of boygenius?
She would swamp phoebe
she just did go stream iris cover
Boy are you in luck
Wow you predicted future, props to you for manifesting such beautiful collab
Wish she would make an acoustic album like this. Incredible voice.
Notes from the archive : Recordings 2011-2016 by Maggie Rogers is!!!!
I thought she deserved the Grammy this year and was disappointed. Her songs speak to me so deeply, especially Falling Water after loosing my husband last year. Thank you, Maggie!
Hope you’re doing okay. All the best!
Agreed. She really should have won that year.
i can't really describe it but this genre of music always feels like it's the last period of a great day full of energy
wow, that's a really beautiful way to put it.
Maggie Rogers is a pure example of where talent, hard work, and passion can take you. After attending college and thinking about giving up on her music career, she traveled to Alaska to begin training as an Outdoor guide. Her last song, Alaska was created from her experiences hiking. She was going through heart ache and life ache. Maggie does such an amazing job sending the message that life is beautiful even when it is a mess and everything is going to be ok. It's crazy to think that one of the biggest role models for girls today is a girl full of plastic surgery **cough cough Kylie Jenner cough cough**. Here we have a girl who is so in touch with herself, so naturally beautiful and truly talented. Could you imagine what the world would be like if the music/fashion industry paid more attention to girls like Maggie? I couldn't stand growing up in todays society, the PRESSSURE everyone must feel.. and we wonder why suicide rates in teen girls are at an all time high.
Keep doing what you are doing Maggie Rogers. Stay true to yourself. You are a TRUE inspiration to girls young and old. THANK YOU.
Your are so right Elisabeth, young girls should trade their cell phones in on a backpack or a guitar and get in touch with the real world.
Elisabeth D. Thank you for writing this up..
Elisabeth D. what a beautiful comment.
This is an earnest and wholesome comment but it also feels like copypasta // a parody of itself.
Give up at 22? That would of been shame to give up on anything when so young. Great new artist
this is one of my favorite tiny desks EVER
I don’t even like her kind of music but the way she feels it is so tangible. It’s like she disappears when she sings. She’s such a completely regular looking person but she holds this light that I find so drawing somehow. I love her. Definitely one of the best things 2020 has given me.
Yes! Its like she goes blank and opens the conduit to somewhere else and gets out of the way so something can flow to us
I felt similar, watching her sing. I'd don't know if I'd use the word 'disappears' but...she clearly goes someplace else...someplace more beautiful... full of open blue skies... ;-)
This version of Alaska is exactly how it should be on the album, completely captures the ache of getting over a real love
SHE'S SO PURE AND GENUINE AND NICE
This rendition of "Alaska" literally touches my soul. Maggies' voice is as pure and clean as glacier ice water. Voice of an angel.
I am listening to you for the first time just stumbled on the NPR tiny desk concerts and so glad I did. All the compliments here are on spot! What a talented young lady :)
She is an angel ❤❤❤
There's something in that office that brings out the best performances of these artists
This version of Alaska at the end all slow and minimal made me cry like a baby!!! Rewinded it so I could cry again. I'd love to be friends and sing in harmony with such a beautiful soul.
Indee 12:58 YAAAASSS
Close eyes, cry, smile, enjoy
Indee I cry every time I hear Alaska. I cried when she played it for Pharrell on the masterclass. It speaks to a part of us that we never want to lose touch with...so much of her music does that for me.
Sometimes the way she sings her high tones makes me think of Joni Mitchell
I agree!
Yesss! I was trying to place it. I love me some Joni. She is the reason I started singing back in 8th grade.
Me too. It makes me think about how I'd rather be listening to Joni Mitchell or anyone else.
And Carly Simon style...She has an old soul! We love it!
And a little Dido in her too....a good healthy mix of styles...all natural.
A Star is Born…. and look at today! She owned the stage at Lollapalooza. ❤
Would love to have seen that! Have been following her for nearly 8 years.
I've lost count of how many times I've come back to this video. I love Maggie so much.
We need an Alabama Shakes Tiny Desk Concert! ASAP
check audiotree
AGREED
Adam Johnson yessssss
searched for one too ahhh still none as a band but they did have brittany howard do a show and it was amazing!!
Can't get enough of this. One of my favorite artist finds of 2017.
So reminicent of a young Joni Mitchell! Nice young Lady!
Cruxal me too
One of my favorite artist finds of 2018!
Do we say "artist finds" now that the word "discover" has been blacklisted? haha
shes so natural and has such a beautiful voice!! Shes been my new favorite singer right now
Just discovered you Maggie recently and so glad I did. Beautiful voice and person. Still watching this in 2023❤
This. was not long enough. Unbelievable talent. Generational.
In a time were computers and digital enhancing programs can create an artist, Maggie is truly so refreshing for the soul. I absolutely love her style and the way she can be herself. She could've easily played Alaska, the same way she performed it for Pharrell but...NO... she took it further to a much deeper place. Thank you, Maggie for sharing your story. Please don't become jaded. Enjoy the ride but stay true to yourself. That's what we love.
That version of Alaska - chills
She sounds like she’s learning how to breathe again in this version of Alaska. So beautiful.
She literally takes me to another world. Her music is ecstasy.
This is so genuine and good. I mourn for those commenters missing out on the beautiful and warm feeling Maggie and the gang's performance grants.
mos def :)
She is incredible.
genuinely terrible, i agree. lovin the vibes
Always gotta be one that's holier than thou...
i agree with you, i should change my opinion to match those around me instead of having my own for fear of being called holier than thou. thanks sturgil!!
She sounds just like the records... Damn !! Love her style and voice
I love Maggie Rogers. She writes and performs the music I always wanted to hear and never really existed. Some sort of mix of the nature and sounds of folk and the catch and release of good pop and movement of dance music. It's kind of rare to find music that so encapsulates your soul and spirit
I just found her music and my goodness, how amazing is she.
Big props to a young lady taking the music industry by storm. She writes, produces and sings almost all of her music. Talent, folks.
Didn't think I could love you any more than I already did omg
her music looks you in the eyes and seeps into your soul to say, "it's gonna be alright. you're safe now"
Maggie's voice is so pure. Her music is transcendent.
Don't understand all the negative comments on here. Her voice is so unique and beautiful! Love her
Peyton B nice voice but not unique
there are few negative comments... I dont understand what you mean
Just don't try to understand lol. And yea I don't even see any negative comments. The word "negative" brings down the vibe for me by itself.
@@codyzwick2753 extremely unique. absolutely stupid comment.
I only needed 30 seconds to realize how beautiful and warm was this woman's voice. As always, NPR brings awesome artists.
Amazing vocals and songwriting. Her music has a flavor of Carol King in her songwriting. First saw her in that clip with Pharrell gushing over her music that went viral. (The 3rd song performed, now striped down into the most beautiful essence here.) Bought her album when it came out and was not disappointed. However, this Tiny Desk performance may be the best I've seen her. Less production, more of her amazing soulful voice.
"Happy Summer". I love her so much.
i cried a little...
Became a bigger fan of her music after listening to this performance. Also please invite Matt Corby please!
Matt Corby! YES!!!
Matt Corby PLEEAAASE
FooLlama hella agree
Corby!!!
Yes yes yes
Does anyone else drunkenly replay this and expect back in my body for the last song. I’ve heard this 100 times and I do it every time. Still a favorite ❤️
I am honored to witness and listen to this. Yes in 2024❤. Thank you Maggie
Portugal. The Man to the Tiny Desk please!!
Fantastic.. Just saw Maggie perform at Lollapalooza a few weeks ago. She is an excellent performer who expressed humility and gratitude for her fans and the opportunity to do what she loves most. I hope to get to see her again soon! Great talent!
How many people were there? Just wondering if she's popular
Now that Light On came out, i want hear her sing it live.. goodness!
she performed it on snl :)
She is goals for every single human being on this planet
Maggie Rogers in NPR. Am I dreaming??❤
maggie is such a goddess & that's all i have to say
I saw her play before she got famous.
Every difficult moment in the past 6 years I have come back to this video for comfort. Going through a rough heartbreak and Alaska soothes my soul everytime.
"Ha.. hi everybody."
And that was the second I fell in love. So adorable.
Love love love the slower tempo of On + Off; it really showcases the strength of Maggie's voice.
This is an old video, but glad she's been getting her due. She's an absolutely rare gem of a musician.
she has this secret little lisp I am terribly in love with.
...and, what a stellar artist.
Just discovered her and haven't stopped listening to this video. My goodness. Absolutely phenomenal. Pure and amazing
Nice voice. Good lyrics... I just enjoy your music
Alexander Fonseca Sequeira also loving the natural look she's rocking!

I keep coming back here every few days to change my mood thx you Maggie you saved my life two or three times now..
letITbleedThru music is a powerful feeling
You alright brother?
she is crazy talented, no bells and whistles just raw talent, beautiful voice maggie
Crazy how i always come back here when i need confort... hope Maggie understand all the good she's doing through her music.
I am diggin' Maggie ! Call itsimple, boring yadayada what u like - she delivers it from her soul and beautifully. There is definitely a place for simple straight forward music as this
Amen !
When we find an artist more connected to their own heart and soul than the need for success, it takes our breath away. It lifts us up. It reminds us of who we are.
She sounds special and so comfortable thanks for that
Why can’t I like this more than once?
People around here are writing comments bout people who are writing negatives comments about her but I just can find people who are writing about the people writing negatives comments about her
same maybe they deleted it???
BoredwithCZcams_ Who knows? Hahahah
True hahahhahahaha
Rafael Eduardo Same here, haha.
It's just a guy named Rob Roilen. He has like a 130+ comment thread going on.
That was amazing. Crazy to listen to the radio version of "Alaska" after hearing this.
I used to watch this everyday my senior year of high school & cry about how pretty her & her music is
This is an astoundingly photogenic group
If they weren't photogenic, their music would have to be good.
FINALLY !!! she deserves so much to be in NPR tiny desktop ! What a voice and an inspiration
THANKS Pharrell Williams !
Some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. It sounds like her heart is singing. And breaking. And loving.
That was like a gift, thank you Maggie & Co.
A humble & grateful artist in a land of brutally selfish takers. I hope you manage to stay this pure & beautiful.
She crushes it in the live versions; far more soulful than the produced versions. Wow!
I seriously watch this just about once a day. What a beautiful soul and voice.
This version of Alaska is so beautiful 💙
I've been listening to her since October of 2016
Tiny Desk Concerts are only possible through donations from our community. This year has been unprecedented but we’ve made sure to keep producing the concerts you love. Show your support with a donation to your local NPR station at n.pr/support-the-tiny-desk
You guys are the absolute best
I wouldn't donate to an organization that covers for big pharma or corrupt government and their lies. Tiny desk concerts are great but the leftist biases within the echo chamber known as NPR is an absolute disgrace and you should be ashamed of your misdirections and outright cover up of organized criminals and their contempt for the public. Do better and stop lying then we can consider donations.
first time i full on bawled to a tiny desk. good god
I stumbled upon the song Alaska on a solitary road trip from Hattiesburg, MS to Tallahassee, FL which is about 5 hours. I'm not exaggerating when I say I listened to that song on repeat more than half the way there. It helped me do some serious reflecting. Usually I like company on a car ride but I was so happy to be alone- there's no better feeling than a solo jam session to get it all out. She is super talented and as much as I love the live version, for once I think I might like the mixed one more for this song.
gregory alan isakov tiny desk now pLEASE
Second this
YES
OMG yes
William Bruno YES
Yesss
This made me cry.
She is so pure.
