  • Real life Star Trek tractor beam! Turns out it is possible to levitate tiny diamonds with a laser beam!!
    Edit: The optical tweezers phenomenon actually won the nobel prize in physics in 2018, along with techniques in ultrafast laser pulse generation.

    • @God-ch8lq
      @God-ch8lq Před 4 lety +10

      wait, so you saym, that given a strong enough laser, steve could levitate
      the closest thing to a laser minecraft has is a beacon, which we can assume is a kind of crystal based laser, using the nether star as the medium
      so, we need to know how powerful a beacon is
      well, since it is rather harmless, i can assume it's a really weak laser, maybe 5 mW
      we will need the total power 50 beacons to levitate a grain of diamond powder
      a full set of diamond armor weight 526.5 kg (source: czcams.com/video/8KuH0-994Hk/video.html)
      i don't have time to do the excat math, but i'll assume you'll need the death star (cleverly hidden in styropyro's basement, so the empire won't find out) to levitate just the diamond armor, not including steve

  • @RichardKCollins
    @RichardKCollins Před rokem +49

    Thanks! If you find the equations for the beam intensity across the beam, and also for how that changes with distance from the focus, you can convert the intensities to energy density (also has units of pressure, Pascal or Joules/meter^3) by dividing the Intensity at a point by the speed of light (Watts/meter^2)/(Meters/second) = (Joules/meter^3). These stationary (nearly time invariant) pressure gradients are easier to work with than momentum equations.
    Also, you might want to look at conical lenses that produce Bessel function pressure (energy density) cavities that can be much larger and farther away from the source. The electric and magnetic fields can be found from the energy density from
    B^2/(2 mu0) = pressure Pascals = e0*E^2/2, where B is in Tesla, E is in Volts per meter, mu0 if the Codata or NIST "vacuum magnetic permeability and e0 is the vacuum electric permittivity. Stupid names. But that is what they call them today.
    I keep asking groups to look for the gravitational effects. The earths gravitational energy density is calculated from g^2/(8 pi G) where g is in meters/second^2 and G is the Codata gravitational constant ("Big G"). The result is also in Joules/meter^3 or Pascal. And you will find the B field equivalent of the gravitational field is about 380 Tesla. The E field is just B times the speed of light or about 115 GigaVolts/meter.
    The average energy density of fluctuations at the earths surface is about 1260 Electron Volts. so you might be able to use your YAG laser and "High Harmonic Generation" to run a beam continuously at the energy densities close to the gravitational range. It is a spectrum, not a single constant value. I think it matches the solar neutrino spectrum fairly closely, with a roughly blackbody spectrum from below 1 eV per photon to a few tens of MeV with a peak about 1.26 KeV.
    In spite of your love for high total POWER, you might tweak your personal wants to include "INTENSITY!" If you want to make "Mr Fusion" (are you old enough to have seen Back to the Future II and III? You do not need massive size, only precise focus and high INTENSITY!! (1 ExaWatt/meter^2 = 1 Watt/nanoMeter^2)
    If you run for several days, the changes in the intensity should show SOME correlation with the magnetic variations , with seismic accelerations, and with the vector tidal Newtonian acceleration at the instrument from the sun on the device, minus the sun on center of the earth. Plus the moon acceleration on the instrument minus the moon on the center of the earth, plus centrifugal accelerations at the station. If you ever get that far, contact me on ResearchGate. I have a project on Solar System Gravimetry and Gravitational Engineering.

    Hey styropyro, great video! I have a question though...
    Considering that the particles aggregate toward the areas of greatest focal intensity within the laser's beam, wouldn't it be possible to move a suspended particle along the path of the beam by adjusting where the focal point is? If so, you could make a miniature tractor beam... You could make a particle or even those diamonds move back and forth by adjusting the light going through the lenses. While I'm no physicist, I think it would be an awesome concept to see implemented...

      @fredex8 Před 6 lety +1

      I imagine that changing the focus would likely make the particle fall out of the beam. If you could use two or three lasers together though and shift them one after the other that sounds like something that could work. Would be interesting to see if you can get two beams focused on the same point and transfer the diamond from one to the other.

      This principle actually works and is used in real labs. You can mount a lens on a translation stage and move the lens and the trapped atoms fairly quickly. This is used to move the atoms from something called a 2D MOT to a 3D MOT, basically two different stages of an experiment.

    Would it be possible to use this physical "tool" to change how metal 3D printing is done? Instead of adding layers of metal and fuse them with laser, would it be possible to continuously channel metal particles through a "laser straw" straight to the wanted position and melt it in place with another laser beam? Like a 3D sewing machine?

  • @IkaraPentiki
    @IkaraPentiki Před 6 lety +57

    The biggest problem, really, is that energy densities which would levitate a car would appear to be high enough to melt it into a uniform spherical blob and probably turn much of it into a plasma in the process.

    • @Juni_Dingo
      @Juni_Dingo Před 6 lety +16

      Well, bigger problem would be that if you were to try it in the presence of air (or atmosphere of any gas), the air would electrically broke down under the electric part of the electromagnetic wave into a ball of plasma, but the plasma is absorbing the light afterwards... And you're pumping zettawatts of power into it... BOOM :D

    • @masterofthelag8414
      @masterofthelag8414 Před 6 lety +7

      So the laser based tractor beam would also function as a pretty good energy weapon. Nice. (Or possibly blow itself up when it hits the air, not certain)

    • @paoloinverse8141
      @paoloinverse8141 Před 6 lety +1

      redstone craft guy solar sail is simpler - just using photonic momentum to propel a reflective surface, rather than manipulate the position of an object in multiple axes. A solar sail is "push only" whereas optical tweezers can move something to any position in 3D space

    I really wanna know a few things here. One, what is the small paper in the frame above the laser wavelength chart, second what is the poster with the phoenix on it, and finally what is the small paper/poster with the circular chart in black and white or grey??

    • @styropyro
      @styropyro  Před 6 lety +2

      the small paper with the red border has thin lens equations for quick optical design. the poster with the phoenix is from the company Esco Optics...they made the incredibly tough mirrors on my ruby laser. the circular chart is the smith chart.

    can you use this to build a lightsaber?

    • @zio205iq2
      @zio205iq2 Před 6 lety

      Cool effect! The wavelength of the Laser suspends the floating reflective diamonds, hmm a lightsaber tip combined with a concave mirror with a hole in it at the base emitter to allow the beam to the surface coating on the reflective tip to bounce the beam back to the concave mirror, I'd say it looks possible for a lightsaber. I'll make a video about it if he doesn't. I was thinking using Ultrasound to make a virtual mirror "in air" or a solid sapphire fiber optic to achieve a lightsaber blade with the strength of steel with a laser-hot tip that could cut through just about anything, but hey, a levitating diamond tip would look way cooler. Can it be done Styro??
