Scythes are the worst thing you can bring in battle because you have to assume that the enemy is running away instead of attacking you. it is the most ineffecient way of attacking someone, Scythes pull they do not push. the enemy is coming at you with armor and you think pulling them into you with your sliding blade will stop their sword from stabbing into you? Watching a couple videos about scythe combat from Eastern and Western styles, I've come to the conclusion that the scythe is a weapon of deception. It's a gimmick, a tool to confuse your enemy and minimize their strengths rather than directly overpower them with your own.
The scythe can be used for an uber-conventional strike, but its ideal means of harming is the slice, simply place the edge of your weapon against your enemy’s body and push or pull to open a wound. However, the true defining moment is what you do prior to this action.
The scythe's structure gives it an odd center of gravity, but this can be put to one's advantage. The weapon pivots quite easily, my interpretation of the reoccurring term "Taking-away" is essentially the act of receiving/deflecting the opponent's weapon with the scythe's pole, then twist it to position the blade for a slice or a light stab aided by an instant fulcrum. Additionally, one could bat a weapon aside while pointing the blade upward, then let it fall in the needed direction to position the blade for a wound.
After the first wound, the opponent may hesitate, especially if they have a more conventionally trained fighting style where judging distance is vital. Not to mention how the pivoting action can make them as wary of the pole as they are the blade. From there, one could land a blow with more stopping power aided by a full-body swing.

Still a very bad weapon and especially in a battle a scythe like this is totally unusable. However scythes just need some minimal amount of smithing and adjustment to remove the handles (or use a new better suited spearshaft) and attach the scythe pointing straight up from the pole and you have made a nice improvised spear or glaive. And this modification was used plenty in medieval battles if I recall correctly.

This shows me that combat with a scythe isn't as bad as I'd thought it was, though I still wouldn't go up against someone in metal armor with one, since that limits your options. My main contention is if you miss with the point of the blade. Someone in armor wouldn't be bothered by an attempted cut to their back if they'd stepped into the swing and captured the scythe. But against someone in gambeson, it would be much more dangerous, and their best defense would be to step back or parry/block and reposte, I would think. The blade itself should be very thick; almost unbreakable.
The peak should be medium spiked/sharp to have a great shattering capability; to shatter the armour.
The blade should be very sharp to cut through the naked parts or the parts where you smashed the armour with the peak.
Also, where the pole meats the blade, there should be two short spikes: one straight and the second going in opposite direction from the blade.
That way, you could have a mace, the sword and the dagger.
Cut the blade at the start near the pole and you have a sword catcher; sword blocker.

A lot of militiamen and foot soldiers couldn't afford swords and other weapons tailored for war. They had to make due with what they had - usually farming equipment. Scythes, sickles, hoes, pitchforks, and in the case of the Japanese, kunai were among the many things that lower-class soldiers would bring into battle.

wouldnt mind seeing a video on modern day techniques, yes a scythe seems highly impractical in a fight, but even then, a scythe will still be a very intersting weapon to use in a fight, your enemy will be confused and will be taken aback due to such a weapon...
(im actually designing a sort of fold up scythe should anyone be interested in helping with it, just say scythe plan in a commnet on my channel and i will get in touch)

So the thing I'm trying to wrap my head around is it looks like when they stike they do it like they're trying to impale eachother, but scythes I know are moreso for slicing. How would one slice a person with a scythe? Like unless they're tied up or asleep, it seems pretty unrealistic to think it could work, which I guess is why they were never a standard weapon.
