Thanks for your excellent master classes, Chris. I'm following you from Madrid, Spain (so the class has a twofold benefit, both for the tuba and the english). I've been playing the tuba for nearly 30 years as an amateur musician in wind bands. I'd have loved to find your lessons eaarlier.
    Keep them up!

Thank you for making this video. I studied with Jake and learned the value of mouthpiece buzzing from him and I am tickled to death that a player of your stature is advocating mouthpiece buzzing. Also, the video is really well done with great information.

AAAAAAAAMEN Chris!!! I talk about the same thing with my studio. Most are high schoolers with underdeveloped tone... Usually because their buzz is too 'pitchy' 'focused' or 'buzzy' and I have to help them make it much more 'airy'. The BERP is MAGICAL with helping them (and me) build a proper low brass buzz

I had the great fortune of taking a lesson with Chris almost two years ago and in addition to the wealth of information and wisdom he had to offer, I felt one of the most valuable takeaways from that lesson was ordering the B.E.R.P. minutes after leaving his house. It has changed my playing for the better and it will for you too if you allow it. Thank you Chris!

I've been "fooling myself" for years untill I watched this video. Although I've been playing the BBb tuba for more than 30 years in so called "championship section bands", I'm overwhelmed by mr. Olka's approach to the art of playing the tuba.
A compensating BBb tuba is very demanding if it comes to response and control of the airstream.
With the use of a BERP I become aware of the training of my lip corners giving much more control and a well focussed sound.
I play a Besson Sovereign compensating BBb tuba and use a Yamaha 66D4 mouthpiece.
Please keep on the good work mr. Olka, you've opened my eyes in many ways! Thank you and regards from Belgium.

    Great explanation, thank you.
Regarding the disconnect many people experience between buzzing and playing, I’d like to highlight an observation I’ve made for myself and some students. Apologies if a similar observation has been made elsewhere in another video or in comments.
The angle of the mouthpiece shank when buzzing separately from the instrument can be radically different from the angle of the receiver.
I recommend holding the horn in playing position, then hold the mouthpiece loosely with fingertips NEXT to the receiver and watch for a discrepancy in angles. The mouthpiece typically dips in the upper register for instance, but this may be restricted when playing the instrument.
More than other brass instruments, the position of the tuba or euphonium can seem fixed. It may pay to adjust posture or horn height to minimize this issue.

Hi Chris! I really appreciate this video. I’ve been buzzing for years, I know it helps and has done a lot for my sound but lately I’ve been struggling being pleased with my buzz sound thinking it was too fuzzy. I will do all the steps you did to check in with myself and if I have some bad habits I’ll correct them. This is a excellent video and you really go into great detail about this topic. Thank you so much!

Good video. I would suggest that perhaps the most valuable benefit of using the Berp is to help improve airflow management. The Berp clearly reveals bad airflow control and by doing so, helps ones understanding of the benefit of addressing that concern.

I suspect there is a difference depending on how the person playing not just the approach thinks and it works great for some and unhelpful for others. It's not a one size fits all world. I suspect the top players all play slightly differently.

What I don't understand is that when I go to take the horn off while playing a Bb, a Db is what I am buzzing. When I go to buzz a Bb instead and put it in the horn, the sound is much more strained and taxing. My range extends down to about a pedal Gb and up to a Gb three ledgers above the staff, so I am not so sure when you say my shortcomings are a result of an underdeveloped embouchure.

The resistance of the instrument isn't a "crutch". It's the actual instrument. Buzzing is the second worst thing to happen to brass playing after forceful inhalations. Just look at what it is that people with Focal Dystonia have to get rid of in their playing to recover. Beware...
