- Kazuma Kiryu is one of the most beloved characters in all of gaming. After being the lead in the Yakuza series since the very beginning, it seems that he’s ready to pass the torch and get out of the lifestyle for good this time.
To celebrate all the good times, and all the karaoke, here’s the history of Kazuma Kiryu.
When Kiryu was young, his parents were murdered by a member of the yakuza. He ended up in an orphanage, and idolized Shintaro Kazama, the yakuza who operated the place. Kazama was a lackey of the Tojo Clan, who had been in a long turf war with the Jingweon Mafia. He was part of a plan to take out two of its leaders at a Christmas party in 1980, but had a change of heart, and tried to convince them to flee instead. Kiryu, misunderstanding the situation, tried to interrupt to save Kazama. In the chaos, a shootout ensued, Kazama killed the mafia boss, and many died.
In the years following, Kiryu’s obsession with the yakuza grew, and Kazama eventually allowed Kiryu and his pal from the orphanage, Akira Nishkiyama, to join the Dojima family.
But of course, Kiryu has to pay his dues, and so he starts on the bottom rung of the ladder...

If you only play the main story, Kiryu is mostly one of the most stoic, wise, and steadfast characters in gaming.
If you do all the side stories, you learn he is truly a man’s man in that he has the big himbo energy, gives his all in karaoke and toilet arcade games, loves racing toy cars, and fishing.
That’s rad!
fr bless the substories, while they may not all be hits they definitely helped in my growing love for this franchise & especially for Kiryu as a character
Kiryu fr enjoys Karaoke more than anything else
Seeing someone like Kiryu not taking himself too seriously some times and having fun is cool af
Legendary character. He deserves to be seen as iconic as Mario, sonic, link, etc
Sonic, sega heh
To be fair Kiryu did step up when Sonic wasn’t pulling in enough money for Sega. Yakuza pulled Sega out of bankruptcy
Kiryu is just what a man strive to be.
My Peak male fantasy
Exactly
Either Kiryu or Majima there is no in-between
Rikiya from Yakuza 3. Now that's a real man as well
yeah but i think his overly self sacrificial trait shouldn't be emulated
Kiryu's been trying to get out of the Yakuza since 0 (chronologically), but every time he's pulled back in. Man can't catch a break.
SPOILERS DO NOT CLICK PLEASE DON'T
Tbf, in 0 he Volunteered to get out of the Yakuza so Kazama wouln't get blamed for bringing Kiryu into the Yakuza. But, after 0 he became a Yakuza once again.
It was when Y1 was where Kiryu wanted to step out of the Yakuza life due to who?

@@radivury444And then gets dragged back into the Tojo Clan’s problems, usually because of Daigo.
@@Phanthief95 Daigo is basically his 2nd child at this point (bro even admits it himself in 6) its honestly not too much of a deal until 5 happens
also he was WILLING to go back to kamurocho in 3 so that adds to this
4:21 Related note about Kazama: he founded Sunflower Orphanage specifically to house children whose parents he killed while doing Yakuza work
What a saint haha
All of us who finished Gaiden having a bro moment on how we're all trying to be more like him.
ishin had me feeling like this
KIRYU IS THE GOAT, THE BEST, THE ONE. HES HIM
But he spent 10 years in the joint making him a-
Legendary character.
the dragon of dojima is a legend, a man whos only fear is letting down the ones he loves. he saced his whole life for his family

He kind
He wise
He strong

He rarely cries
He not angry
He help
He knows how others feel
He respect
He define how to be a man.
I wish this man actually existed
From Yakuza member who solidified himself as the dragon of dojima the living legend, to now secret agent.... The man is truly amazing.
Kiryu is the man we want to be, and Ichiban is the best friend we could ask for. Or vice versa depending on your personality. Can’t wait for like a dragon infinite wealth!
Best series ever made
The ideal of what a man should be is Kiryu, He's so underrated compared to other characters.
Kiryu Kazuma without a doubt the best video game character
Without a doubt one of the best gaming protagonists in gaming history, up there with Arthur, Big Boss & Kratos
He's not just an amazing protagonist, he's a legend.
Thank you for this video! I've playing up to the middle of Yakuza 5 and its great to have a refresher course all the other games plots. I hope to finish 5 & 6 by the time Infinite Wealth comes out. I loved Gaiden!
One of the best protagonist in gaming. 👊🏻
One of the greatest protagonists in Video Game History.
So this is that Kiryu they keep talking about in Like a Dragon Gaiden. . .
He looks just like Joryu.
also remind me a lot of the taxi guy

This is a certified Baka Mitai moment
"Old Friend" that sounds like somebody who has never played Yakuza before describing Nishki
Thanks Tam this is so helpful
Excellent job Tamoor and Lucy, the rest of GameSpot can learn from your example
Amazing summary full of detail 👍
Yo, sugoi. What a wonderful summary for this. Thx. ;-;
Good job! Kiryu is awesome!
Best protagonist with an incredible and very well constructed story. Kiryu-chan is legendary and eternal.
The only game I'd buy on all consoles
Kiryu will do the right thing no matter how incredibly idiotic the right thing is, man has the spine (and face) made of titanium.
"A Dragon Among Men"
the Legendary Yakuza.
Now we look at the rise of a new Legend. Legendary Hero Yakuza. ( He's rising pretty good, too.)
Good stuff, I didn't want to watch a five hour summary so this was really helpful.
KIRYU IS A LEGEND.
My favorite Yakuza
still can't believe after 0-7 and now to 8(infinite wealth), RGG series just surface in western gaming and kind of sad that kiryu will be replace by kasuga ichiban
2:25 Dang dude. I know you're having to compact 20 years of history into a 12 minute video, but that's a SUPER reductive way of what happened when Nishi had a gun to Kiryu's head.
the love of my life
Wait hold on. Let me finish yakuza 0
Kiryu is the greatest video game protagonist in my opinion
To Sum up.......Baking the rolls, baking the world....TENDERNESS!
BAKING THE LOAF!
Marble mouth guy is working a lot lately
He is protagonist Kazuya Mishima
Kiryu and Majima should be SEGA’s mascot at this point.
A Real Man
this is a very sloppy bare bones explanation but good enough for new fans overall 7.5/10
Thanks to Shintaro Kazama Kiryu is now much more a Deadly Yakuza
But Kiryu still Wise,Chill,Calmer
greatest gaming mc
Man and to think I got into this series all because of Baka Mitai.
It's insane how this single man and the franchise as of a whole effectively carrying SEGA.
I really couldn't remember any other SEGA franchise besides Persona that's doing just as much as well and making money as the Yakuza games.
and Yet SEGA still simps over Sonic and puts him as the center mascot even though all of the games released so far has been mid to mediocre at best and the only recent good Sonic game i could remember is Sonic mania which wasn't even entirely made by SEGA themsleves but rather funded by them and was developed by someone who is a genuine Sonic fan.
Seriously,I feel like Kiryu should be the main mascot of SEGA but that's just me.
Because Sonic is easily marketable and not rated pg. As much as we love the Yakuza games it's too violent to become the main company mascot that may turn off a specific target market that doesn't want their kids to be playing a Japanese crime series
There's a reason why the Yakuza/LaD games aren't getting awards from the Western market despite it's popularity + quality because of how the series is violent.
Sonic is audience friendly, Kiryu got too much violence that’s why
Kiryu, the dragon of dojima, the legend & one of the best protagonist in gaming with 20+ years in gaming history.
A stoic, wise man with the heart of gold. It is what a man should be. It will be a sad day when RGG finally retires Kiryu.
Will they? We thought they’d retire him after 6 & he still came back for 7 & Gaiden.

Not a bad video, usually game media gets everything wrong. Only a few mistakes spotted in this video and a weird pronunciation of Saejima

Kiryu from Yakuza 0, 1, 2, 6. John Yakuza from Yakuza 3 and 4. Taichi Suzuki from Yakuza 5. Man in Grey Suit from Yakuza: Like a Dragon. And Joryu from Like a Dragon: Gaiden. These 5 individuals are all different people. It’s the truth. Accept it

Is there a Pre-YongYea and a Post-YongYea distinction on the timeline?
Why people hating his voice?
@@Nobodysurvivesevenonebitthe previous voice actor fit Kiryu more and was far better than Yong tbh
After playing the games for so long in Japanese, I just stick to Japanese. I was curious to try out English for everyone else voices, just to check them out. But nah, his voice is so bad as Kiryu I just can’t.
Not canon.
@austinjames6497 Same, Like a Dragon 7 was really cool to experience both ways, but in Infinite Wealth it just feels like I'll always be thinking about Yong's voice strangely so I'll just go with Japanese to avoid disappointment.
I wish he was in Call of Duty Zombies

They should make a yakuza series just for Nishiki, Majima or Saejima
a "gaiden"-like game for these characters would be so good, nishiki during kiryu's prison time and majima-saejima at their best in the '80s. wow.
and then YongYeah VA attack and everything is change (for dub lover that is)
Yakuza 6 is the dumbest story development so far in Yakuza series 😂
