I just realized that the hijacking of the plane is based on a real hijacking of the German Landshut flight 181 in 1977 by four members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The search for passengers from Israel, the blocking of the runway which in reality happened in Dubai and even the stewardess seems to be based on Gabriele Dillmann who went above and beyond to care for the passengers during this ordeal. The plane was stormed by German special forces from the newly formed GSG9 unit in Mogadishu, killing 3 of the hijackers and wounding 1. Miraculously no passenger died. Sadly the pilot got shot by the hijackers before this when the plane landed in Aden.

Something to point out. During the hostage situation at Entebbe the terrorists, who were from the PFLP and the German Red Cells deliberately separated the Israeli and Jewish hostages from the rest of the passengers. While this attack was meant to force Israel into a prisoner negotiation they were indifferent to whether or not the Jewish passengers were Israeli or not. Even a Holocaust survivor ended up confronting one of the Germans in this regard who continued to disregard the matter relating to the Nazis. So while this film is a typical action movie of the 1980s they did throw in some realism regarding how these terrorists operated.

Fun Fact: director/producer Menahem Golan, 1/2 of the legendary ''GoGo Boys'', the owners of Cannon Films (the other was his cousin, Yoram Globus), was a former fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force and had good connections to the Israeli military. That's why a number of Cannon Films productions were filmed in Israel with technical support from their military. (similar to how Jerry Bruckheimer & Michael Bay get lots of support from the Pentagon).
He actually directed a movie about the real-life rescue operation at the Entebbe Airport by Israeli Special Forces in 1976, which was a huge commercial success in Israel.
It's called ''Operation Thunderbolt'' and stars Klaus Kinski as the terrorist leader.
So basically, he made the same movie again, only this time it was pure fiction and meant to raise morale and improve the public image of the US Special Forces, after that colossal screw-up in Iran.
Also, the whole thing where the terrorists separate all the jewish hostages happened in real-life, during the Entebbe hostage situation, so despite all the 80's cheese, there's a degree of realism here.

The 2 main things to come out of the Eagle Claw debacle was the formation of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (basically a spec ops helicopter team) and the creation of SOCOM Spec Ops Command. To allow cooperation between different units. However you will notice generally besides embedding Airforce Close Air support guys within teams the different teams do tend work separately. Socom just decides which team is best suited and available for any given mission. This allows teams to develop their own standard procedures and have differing approaches. While this gives Socom options it limits inter-unit operability as different training, styles, procedures etc can lead to confusion and chaos on the battlefield.

So many missed references other than George Kennedy. Bo Svenson (the pilot) was the lead in the original inglorious bastards. Lee Marvin was also in the movie who was the lead in the father of all ensamble commando mission type movies, the dirty dozen. In fact, if memory serves a couple of scenes in delta force pay homage to the original dirty dozen. The villain Robert Forster, famous for the cult classic vigilante among others, played a soldier in Reflection in a Golden Eye. Marlon Brando plays his CO in the movie, who is a secretly gay. In the movie, Brando has the hots for him and wants to bang Private Forster. I guess the trauma of it all made Forster leave the US Army and join a Lebanese terrorists group.
Love your channel by the way. Your video make me laugh every time...

Eagle Claw didn’t lead to the birth of Delta…Delta was involved in EC. The lack of communication between branches (which ultimately led to this spectacular failure) did however lead to the birth of units like SOAR and ISA…

And eventually SOCOM. Originally SOCOM comprises of the Special Ops Commands of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Marines didn't want to play ball until the mid-2000s with the creation of MARSOC.

Just found your channel and damn what a pleasant surprise that you wrote something about this movie. I actually have a huge soft spot for these 80s movies and damn this one is like the prototype of the cheesy American action movie. Simple as fuck story that would be ridiculous today and some crazy action. This is the essential "Turn off your brain movie", but unlike modern movies like transformers etc. this actually delivers a convincing picture that is full of love by the people who worked on it.

Btw just tid bit thing. Delta was already established before Eagle Claw. Delta came about due to rising terrorism of the 1970s. And the Colonel Beckwith you mentioned who served in Vietnam and as exchange officer with the British SAS. And that's where him and another Col. got the idea for Delta Force. And then after operation eagle claw we see the formations of SEAL Team 6 or official DEVGRU. And also not USSOCOM but JSOC was created to be the operational handler of all special OPERATIONS. SOCOM didn't come up until 1986 or 87 with the passage of the Goldwater- Nichols Act. Making SOCOM the unified command to all special operations and special forces groups. And then last but not least also born from eagle claw was the 160th SOAR, yep the same group from blackhawk down.
