I absolutely LOVED this movie when I was younger. I've watched it again recently and while I do have some nostalgia for it, I do NOT enjoy it nearly as much as I did as a kid. Still I think it is fun movie that is overlooked way too much.

Isn’t that funny how we’ve changed. Me and my friends LOVED the movie Nate and Hayes with Tommy Lee Jones back in the 80s…but it sucks! Still am nostalgic for the times we watched it way back when, but I can’t stand it now.

Part of the reason the movie didn't do so well was because when it went to theaters it was advertised as an action movie. It's more of a comedy.

    • @americathebeautiful3883

@@simbriant I can see that. It was a somewhat satirical take on action/heist movies of the time. Lots of people miss the joke because of the mislabing.
Funny part is, it looks like a masterpiece compared to most of his movies from the last decade

This movie is so self aware that it's almost a crime... I love every minute of it.
I know Bruce has gotten slammed as of late for making shit movies where he phones in the performances... and rightfully so... but he has also done fantastic work in a lot of great movies over the course of his career. That said... the "Swingin' on a Star" heist scene from this film is one of my personal favorites from his career!

I saw this movie in the cinema, and when it was released, I bought it on laser disc. I absolutely love this movie. The thing is, I never tried to take it seriously - I always assumed it was a spoof - a satire of action movies. Maybe some people need some chemical enhancement to reach the state in which I normally live, but I thought this was hilarious, and I laughed my way through the entire movie. Things like Tommy's ridiculous survival or Hawk never getting his 'effete European coffee' (before there was a Starbucks on every block) were meant to poke fun at other movies.
After seeing reviews like yours, it really made me wonder if I'm reading too much into it, or if I was the only one who got the joke.

  • @ZenithfilmsUK
    @ZenithfilmsUK Před 2 lety +22

I unironically love this movie, 'what can I tell you, I'm the villain' Some of the jokes are pitch perfect for my sense of humour and still make me laugh out loud to this day, the weird use of swearing and violence, the weird nods to slap stick Looney Tunes cartoons, the overall weirdness of the entire film, intentional or not. Willis does have a knack for comedy timing imo and it's a shame he doesn't try more, y'know since atm he's doing any old shit for a pay cheque.
Don't get me wrong, 'You Eddie Munster looking mf' this is not a perfect movie, what movie is? But one of the biggest problems it had was when it released they marketed it as an action movie to bring in that Die Hard crowd, which was a massive mistake. Had they marketed it correctly who knows, it would have probably still bombed due to it's weirdness and people wanting more Willis shooting people (which I think he still thinks is the case judging by his current batch of, I'll generously call, movies) but at least it would have drawn in the proper audience, y'know, those people who want to see what a comedy would look like if it was made by a hungover David Lynch.
Never the less a great Willis movie to start your review train with ;)

#1: I actually defend this movie for at least trying to be something unique. It's this weird hybrid of a heist film, cartoony slapstick, blow 'em up actioner, and buddy comedy. It defies classification in the same way it's script defies logic. In truth, I'd rather see a movie fail for trying to be unique than fail as a soulless, generic, paint-by-the-numbers straight-to-video cash grab...but I'm sure you'll be looking into Bruce Willis' later catalog soon enough.
#2 Richard E. Grant is goddamn treasure in this movie.

I like to think of the last Boy Scout as the true sequel to die hard. Like he was blamed for the hostages that died and had to open a private detective office in la. I fucking love that movie. Exactly for its time its a pretty good comedy, If it bombed at the box office doesn't mean is bad, John Carpenter's The thing bombed and it's now considered a cult classic and a great horror movie, also if you are going to fact check every word spoken in a comedy movie! you already set your mind to not like the movie, I mean this movie is not great but is not the garbage red eye makes seems to be is just a good comedy film for the time it came out.

"cheesy, corny, goofy and cartoonish"...sure, but this script is the total opposite of "Focused". As was even mentioned in this review, the tone of this movie is all over the place. That was probably its main flaw. Merging Slapstick and visceral violence is a very hard tightrope to walk.

Comment in advance of watching the reviwew: I unapolagetically love Hudson Hawk. It's goofy and stupid, it has many problems, but I just love it from start to finish. Now - let's see what I think AFTER the review :)
Update: You're not wrong. It's a mess, it's badly written, and it can't decide what genre it wants to be - but I still love it. The weird transition when they jump off the museum after the first robbery is - as I recall - a result of post production/editing where something else was supposed to happen but they couldn't get it to work so just made a harsh jump cut. I suspect I just watched this at a time of my life when I was into weird stuff and it just imprinted on me. Arguably, the whole film is just about Hawk trying get a cappuchino - the whole Da Vinci stuff is just sub-plot ;)

There's a bit in your review where you show the scene with Richard Grant manically thrusting his hips as his Goldfingeresque plot comes to fruition, and you're like "I can bear through this" and I'm like "That's one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie and 95% of why I like Grant as an actor."

I loved this movie as a kid. I would sit and watch the whole thing no matter what scene i just so happened to start watching it. I haven't watched it lately, but I can still see why i enjoyed it as a kid. I don't think it deserves the bad rap it has received from critics.

I watched this movie when I was a teenager back in China in the middle 90s. For the context, Hollywood movies had just entered the Chinese market, we started importing big budget blockbusters to theatres, then there were these super weird American movies on TV, the ones probably made almost their entire box office from selling to China, and the TV stations that bought them couldn't care less about these, they cut the original dialogues, dub them within an hour by 2 voice actors(sometimes 4 maximum); and if there's soundtrack behind then they just find a random piece of music and fade, it was weird. And I endured a bunch of these movies and enjoyed some. But this movie was so bad even at that time I thought this was a weird movie and almost gave it up half way. The only reason I endured the movie was because if I didn't, I would need to go back to my room and do my homework. I was so disappointed with Bruce Willis I thought he was a terrible actor. He was later redeemed (in my mind) by "The Last Boy Scout" shown on the same channel the week after.

    1) I just suscribed. I love 90's and 80's action movies, I've been watching some of your reviews and I got a good chuckle out of them. Good job, mate.

Take this with the pinch of salt from a person whose favorite movie is Smokey And The Bandit, but I think this is perfect 80's mindless popcorn, comedy and I like it. If you are looking for a Laurence Of Arabia quality film with topline performances, quality writing, epic landscapes and an actual intelligent, logical story, then this is not your movie, but if you go into this movie with no expectations then you will have a fun experience. It might be one of those movies that some wacky tabbacky might make more watchable! I can however see where it lost $90 million dollars, however any production company that spends that amount on a comedy, deserves to lose everything.

  • @petermerchant4439

As with others, I watched this in the theater and enjoyed it. Still do. But I agree, it's not a great movie.
Some of the background of this movie is that, at the time, Bruce Willis was white hot. He had just starred in "Die Hard" and was starring in the hottest TV show of the time, "Moonlighting." Basically, he could do whatever he wanted and Hollywood would pay for it. So he spread his wings--tried writing, released a music album, etc. Lots of "Vanity Projects."
One of the things I like about this movie is that it looks like everybody is having fun and just enjoying the randomness and making a bad movie.

Growing up I honestly thought this movie was a comedy. I thought it was supposed to be a spoof of heist movies. I mean henchmen called snickers and butterfinger? Alchemy? A get away in a Leonardo flying machine? Shitty segways that are used to skip boring traveling scenes? Loud as shit singing while "sneaking" on a heist. What part of that am I supposed to think is a serious movie? Damn Bruce.......Just damn lmfao.
