  • Meet Cadets Rocha and Winters as we follow them through the Austin-Travis County EMS Cadet Academy. All newly hired Cadets begin their career with ATCEMS with an 8-week paid training academy. The Academy is a state-of-the-art facility located in southeast Austin, which houses multiple classrooms, a gymnasium, and a driving track. This facility trains all public safety cadets of the Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, and ATCEMS. It is a very busy campus with lots of public safety activities. EMS cadets will train at this location, Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (times and days may vary depending on scheduled activities) but cadets will not live on site.
In the first 2 weeks of the Academy, Field Cadets will be required to complete an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) leveling class, taught by experienced ATCEMS instructors. This class is designed to ensure that Cadets have a good EMT foundation to build on for the remainder of the Academy. Upon completion of the 2-week leveling class, all Cadets must pass an EMT Knowledge Exam with an 80% or higher to continue in the Academy.

This is exactly how EMS should be. It should be a career that takes pride in itself because it hold the providers to a high mental and physical standard. I absolutely love EMS, but am so sad that these standards are not THE standard. Running EMS in PA is nowhere near like this. My company tries and is ahead of others, but not nearly to this level.

they can't even get these folks to understand where a name badge goes on a uniform. Attention to detail is important smh
