    If you've ever wanted to make a simple liquid-filling-something effect this quick and easy tutorial is for you. You might not believe how simple it is. It's not Realflow, but it is RealEasy.
    Also, if you're nerdy like me, you're probably wondering why I always start my shapes by double clicking the tool. It's the quickest way to make sure your shape is centered exactly in the middle of the comp with its anchor point in the middle. That way you can rotate the shape without it wobbling.

      That's exactly one of the reasons I decided to make tutorials in the first place. And yes, I can't stand tutorials without VO. Almost every computer has a mic. Use your voice (and don't keep the music blasting in the background). I've considered adding some really subtle music, but these are tutorials, not short films, haha.

    How would you apply the same principles to a logo, would you have to create the logo elements within After Effects or could you import it from Illustrator?
    Also can the same technique be applied to text?

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, you'd need to use the setup at the end of the video. Use whatever logo or text you want, it doesn't matter if they're vector or raster as long as there's an alpha. Then you use that layer as a track matte. You can also use a black and white image to do it. Here's info if you're unfamiliar with track mattes: helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/alpha-channels-masks-mattes.html#track_mattes_and_traveling_mattes

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  Před 6 lety

      You mean cut out from it the shape so the liquid is your logo? Sure. I put the logo underneath the layer that I used this technique on. Then I set the track matte (TrkMat in the UI next to Mode) of the logo's layer to alpha matte. Hopefully that helps! If not let me know.

      Sure, it's just not as easy to set up and control for this look, it takes a lot longer to render, and doesn't scale well. And you'd still need to mask it, or animate a matte shape up. You can also use Wave Warp. But it has the same pitfalls.

    • @Workbenchtv

      Hi! Instead of using a path, you'd need to use a mask to reveal the image. If you want a square, you basically use the same tools and process, you just make the square while you have the image layer selected. If not you can just draw a mask with the pen tool. Basically instead of making a shape layer, you need to make a mask (shape) on an image layer. I hope that makes sense.

    what does set first vertex do?

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  Před 7 lety +1

      I should've explained that more. When you draw a path with the pen tool, or even the shape tools (that's non parametric, i.e. a path only without size parameters) the first vertex is set. So After Effects orders and keeps track of the vertices. For some reason, when you convert a parametric shape into a bezier shape path, it doesn't keep track of that order, so when you animate it, it seems to keep track of them spatially and odd things happen because the points can swap order. That part is hard to explain. If you're curious, do this tutorial and omit the "set first vertex" step and animate the path.

What you want to do is just click Path 1 not both of them. When Path 1 is selected go and select that single point. Also when you start editing the Flow, its a third party plug in. Yes in real old school the type looks no larger than 6pt on my MacbookPro 15inch. And it's fuzzy. I need to get used to watching more tutorials, the main issue I always find is the thing I'm trying to do is slightly different to the example I've managed to find so I'm almost always left wondering what to do:( God I wish I had your skills! I'd find work tomorrow. Business is SO different now. Everything has become soooo technical:(

      Weird, I have a 15" MacBook pro. 2 actually, an older one and a newer one (and a 15" Powerbook that stopped working a long time ago, haha). That should be good enough to see it. Is youtube forced to 1080p? I find sometimes with auto set it still gives me crap quality unless I specify it for videos and I have a 150/150 connection.
      Everything doesn't have to be so technical, but it certainly helps to speed things up if you can use it to your advantage. :) I definitely encourage you and everyone else, to go beyond the example. A lot of the stuff I've learned was when I did just that.

    honestly this didn't help me at all
    idk where I went wrong but this sucks. no hate intended but u should probably slow down I like the straight to the point videos but that doesn't mean fly through it. I am experienced with after effects and still could not keep up

      I'm not really sure what's difficult. It's animating a rectangle and flip flopping the bezier handles on two sides as it animates up. Did you miss the part about "Set first vertex?" Without that it gets funky. That's about the only part that can be messed up. It's all in there.
