Idk man, he’s up there but best is hard to say. Napom is a world champ who also don’t lots of drum beat. D-low is really good also but prefers a different style. He’s world class but THE BEST….. it’s close lol

Oh I get that. And I agree maybe d-low was reaching though his drum and bass timing and rhythm is crazy but napom is very much known for his drum and base. Have you not heard the guy. Not very musicial. Mostly drum and bass plus he’s won worlds using that stuff….. I’d agree helium is probably the cleanest. Also I’m not saying he isn’t the best but I’d say he’s not an easy call for BEST. for sure top tier though.

7:21 This sound is called Inward bass, and is made by inhaling and tightening a certain part of your throat, the vibrations made in your throat are what make that deep growly bass.
Check out Dlow and King Inertia for some sick inward bass.
Also noted that inward bass depending on technique/textures can be interpreted as like an inward chest bass.
Which is also interesting how he patted on his chest when noting in this technique(inward bass)

Considering your interest in beatboxing I feel like watching live on stage battles is a must! Helium had an interesting one against a beatboxer called King Inertia at GBB. Their styles contrast eachother a lot so it could be a potentially interesting watch/listen
Helium currently one of the top now in the scene with "drum kit" arsenal techniques. Drum patterns, precise snares hi hats clean sounds... He is a beast now. Drummers will appreciate his style
I think d-low’s kickback battle winners compilation will be very cool for you rhythmically speaking! Theres so much cool rhythm stuff there! Also, There’s a section in that video where he pretends to use a looper and an effect but he’s actually doing it all live and vocally, simulating a looper beat!

ESH, absolutely loving the beatbox reactions. The hand movement and placement on the mic help certain sounds come through and also help with resonance and such. Mic techniques are very important in beatbox

You gotta hear the second round wildcard for the GBB 2023. The execution is insanely clean with a few VERY little timing deviations.
Ive been in the beatbox community for over 5 years and this is one of the best reactions ive seen for beatbox, i love that your focus was mostly rythm and pattern based and less vocally focused like most other reactions.

As for your questions, mic dynamics play a huge role in beatbox. A more skilled beatboxer could lose a battle against someone less skilled but who knows what sounds hit on stage and how to utilize the mic.
Mic cupping is used to help create more power, makes sounds louder but makes details muddy. Gotta know when to open mic or cup the mic, and where to position the mic.

gg whoever recommended Helium, he is one of the best drummers in the bbx scene right now.
Sometimes they will cup the microphone to make certain sounds 'pop', but it does muffle it a bit.

Microphone manipulation does help with making sounds come out differently. Also that last bass is called inward bass. It is similar to throat bass but instead of exhaling, with inward bass you are inhaling air while making a vibration essentially in your throat.
The pattern he does after the breakdown at 1.15 just so you're aware, the snare is an inward breath sound. When you start breaking down what goes into these individual sounds especially Helium doing them so crisp, the sounds alone are out of this world impressive but to combine them so quickly with inhale, exhale and dead air noises it blows my mind.
Edit: I stand corrected, but this only amplifies the appreciation for beatboxers of this calibre. Just when you think you know how a sound is made, or try to make sense of it, and the goal posts get moved 🤣

beatboxers often use different microphone positions because some allow the bass to get in better and some are more comfortable. the sounds are very weird and are very wieid to produce so it helps
YES!! Helium is the guy when the topic is drum and bass, he is basically a machine at this point, high percentage of perfection in the all the routine usually pros get like 85% or so helium usually is 95%+, he's just insane, you'll love his round 2 of gbb2023.

7:22 it’s inward bass, it’s a inward vibration of arytenoid cartilages and epiglotis. His is extremely tight to the point that it sounds like a fry and vocalised, which gives it a really unique texture and a lot of endurance since he doesn’t breath much air in
How did you come to the conclusion about it being the arytenoid cartilages and epiglotis specifically? I mean, the only thing I'm certain about is that it's not made with the vocal folds since I can add and remove the voice as I wish while doing different inward basses.
@@bransan97 a few people have done tests with cameras that goes down your nose. Inertia has a story about it where you can clearly see the epiglotis vibrating. Also that's something you can kinda feel when messing around, i discovered 6 differents inward bass types and around 100 variations in 3 years, and so i kinda have a map now of what does what on the inside of my throat

As an avid fan of beatbox, it's great to see these reactions from musically inclined people outside the beatbox world.
It's a community that is heavily undervalued in society right now. One of my issues with a lot of new music is its all computerized. These guys found a way to make a lot of these sounds orally.
It's mind blowing and I think really takes music to another level.
They deserve so much more praise and opportunities to make a real living off of doing it.

Pf Snare: The sharp snare. Is made by saying "Pf" but blowing the air out of your mouth quickly and making it sharp.
Inward "K" Snare: Similar to the traditional drum hit snare. Is a bit complicated to learn. I do it by placing the tip of the tongue on the roof of my mouth and saying the letter "K" inwards. It is easier to practice saying "K" inwards and then trying to do the tongue technique.
The bass sounds are probably easier to just refer to as bass. That is because there are so many different bass variations and i can name these from the top of my head:
The tongue bass (most likely the one Helium used in the video)
The click roll bass
The inward bass (edit: he used this bass at the end of the video)
The chest bass
the vocalised chest bass
the throat bass
the vibration bass
the fart bass
the starsky bass
the lip bass...
I probably missed some but yeah you get the idea

Real-time mic manipulation is a great way to say it and yes, it creates a different ambience in the sense that it chokes the highs/upper mids and essentially acts as a low effort bass heavy EQ and a low pass filter. I’m no expert that’s just what I’ve observed with that cupped mic technique

Asking who is the best DnB beatboxer is a great litmus test for how deeply someone understands beatbox technicals
You should watch a couple of D-Low's Judge Analysis videos from GBB 2021, and also a couple of his normal reaction videos.
He's a humble guy, and very good about just being impressed and giddy when watching people normally... but when he goes into "judge mode" it's just insane how different he is. He can tell a 1-2 bpm drop from the beginning of a routine to the end, little missteps in consistency of timing that are a few milliseconds off at most, tiny losses of pitch through a routine... it's like he has perfect pitch and perfect time.
You are describing basic fundamentals of a good musician. Love to hear it. I'll check out more of this guy for sure

The bass end at the end is called inward bass in its created through inhaling. It has two main variations but this variation is called inward chest bass. Despite the name, the sound is not created in the chest but the epiglottis which is actually quite high in the throat however, because it's made while breathing in the sound resonates loads within the chest.
Putting your hand on a different spot, is how we put some sound filters on the beatbox, playing with the bass or making a more boxy sound, or mitigating a bass for a jazzy or lo-fi sound..

FYI in these wildcard videos, you're hearing pretty close to raw audio. All they're allowed to do is equalizer, compressor, and limited reverb. No cuts or edits, no extreme production...
I mean, that said, microphone effect is really critical, and mic technique in general.
Edit: haha, you asked about it! So yes... getting closer to a mic emphasizes bass tones. Cupping the mic emphasizes them even more. So with that double-hand cupping, he's trying to get as much bass as he can out of a pattern that's probably a little weak without the mic.
It's similar to something like a metal scream. They're shockingly _quiet_ just in a room with no mic; they let the amplifier do the work. Similarly, really high-end beatboxers use entirely different sound sets for acoustic vs. amplified vs. produced sets. If you've heard an ambient recording of a beatboxer whose kick drums are kind of like mini fart bass bursts, that's because that ultra-clean plosive kick drum just isn't very loud without a mic.
Beatboxers with less access to high-end mics and software tend to use tricks like recording in a bathroom or stairwell, to get some natural reverb and bass amplification.
I honestly think I will prefer these type. I like the one take with no fx.

Im not an expert with the mic and techniques of the mic but overing the mic with both hands can help low and breathier sounds pop more. Also that sound at 7:10 is called inward bass and it comes from mainly the lower neck and probably the chest too. The sound is really popular nowadays because its very strong and versatile. And great showcase on stage of inward base would be king inertia vs helium (the guy you just watched)

It's been interesting watching Fairy Voice Mother react and give insights into the vocals (shocker) and song structure. The answer to your question at 7:18 is inward bass, made through inspiration. You also heard it in the video with Den and every beatboxer more or less has a different inward bass. You basically breathe inwards as if you have been out running for a long time, but you open up your airways a little bit more.
D-low has a very dirty inward bass and many other mind boggling techniques aswell and I would recommend listening to some of his stuff, 'Hard sometimes' and 'Sing a little harmony' are very good ones.
4:52 Holding the mic with two hands is more precise and there less room for errors, it can also alter sounds.
Also, the "fuzz" that you are talking about is called wobbles

when you cup the mic and talk into it it becomes compressed compared to when you hold the mic like a singer would. that cupping and compression gives the sounds more power and punch in the speakers.
when you asked about the microphone placement.. 5:08 the only reason he did that there is because the technicality technique that he is using there is more and more quiet the faster you do it so you cant add that much strenght to each indivitual tounge movement and lip movement because of the tempo he is trying to go at so he is just putting the mike closer and covering it with his hands so you can listen to the sound better.
Always nice to see a reaction from someone who understands music theory through and through instead of jumping around like a headless chicken adding not substance to the video.
Colaps's wildcard is the next one you should react to imo, he's the current world champ (gbb champ), and cleanest and most technical beatboxer in the world. He also improved a lot since his wildcard was dropped.
On his channel he sometimes breakdown a lot of pattern he has for us to learn from it which is very cool!
One-hand mic handling: gets you clear sounds however some of the detailed sounds might not go into the mic.
Two-hands: gets all the detailed sound into the mic however sound will slightly muffle.
I hope we get to see more drum and bass on this channel in the future, not just beatboxing 😄 Would be cool to see reactions to dnb songs with good production and crazy drum breaks
The inward bass is close to an inhale growl. It uses your false folds but with an inhale. This is something that needs a lot of practise because most people don't use their false folds often and using them inward is even harder. While trying to learn the sound it is very easy to overdo it and it will make you gag or even throw up if you're not careful
If you're going down the rabbithole, i can recommend watching some oldschool clips from like "Roxorloops", killa kella and reeps one. Then you can also campare the evolution of beatboxing from like 15 years ago:)

I'm not a tech beatboxer so I don't know anything about that but the last beat he uses inward bass and he just has a special tone to his that makes it very sub. Inward bass is still in the throat and sometimes you can turn your head to I guess squeeze your larynx, or do it with your hand, or different tongue positions, or a different way of inhaling.
Best way of explaining inward bass is to do a hard dry gasp in and experiment with different gasps if you don't get the normal bass. Then once you're used to it you can just get that feel for inward bass and experiment with the other gasps to get different sounds. After a few weeks of inward bass you can just do it at will like it's normal breathing.

Yes, Mic manipulation may change how you sound in beatboxing, especially on stage. Some uses mic techniques differently for specific sounds they make as well.
You should def watch YA NA HA which is a crew of beatboxers and their GBB wildcard which is one of the best tracks I have ever heard. also the fuzz sound is a lip oscillation
Inward bass is definitely a different style of beatboxing mind equal blown haha
They change it up all the time because when you're in a judged competition you get points deducted if you repeat the same bar more than twice. Just like any other competition there are official rules.
There are generally three ways a beatboxer will hold a mic. All are meant to capture as much sound as possible. Helium did all three so I’ll have a visual aid.
5:48 Hand closed around the (head?) of the mic. This is good for drumming sounds and any sound that involves the mouth. The downside is that sounds from the nose will be either un-hearable or so quiet they might as well be un-hearable. I think this is a common grip in general outside beatbox, idk I don’t watch live performances from artists, and is pretty much the basic grip.
5:54 Index finger resting on the nose. This is good for humming and any sound that involves the nose. It also makes your mouth sounds quieter because they can escape more, so some pseudo-dynamics if you will. Probably the most flexible honestly. The downside is if you have an involuntary exhale through your nose it will come through the mic.
6:04 Double handed top hand over the nose and usually it index resting on the nose. (Not cupping the mic, cupping the mic is a downgrade no matter what.) This is for those sounds that are usually quiet and you want to get more volume from them. Helium used it for inward bass which, while his isn’t quiet at all, is usually the most common sound used with this grip. The downside is that it usually makes drum sounds murky.
Of course some sounds have exceptions like you’d think double handed would make sound A much better, and logically it should, but really it makes it worse.
With a dynamic mic, especially like the mic technique is almost as important as the beatbox itself, knowing how to hold the mic properly for which sound etc, some sounds are loud and others are of lower in volume by nature and due to the mix that can't vary during the performance some frequencies are more likely to be picked up by the mic especially some sounds are more nasal so covering the kic and having your mic inside the cup will help you get more of those sounds as an example.

Cupping your hand over the mic to add or even isolate your nose can make one thing sound completely changed
Generally the effect is a fuller, lower sound
So for things like high hats or rim shots and certain drum combos, you would not want this, but for most basses, it is very handy

It's akin to a vocal fry, but inward and a bit further down the throat, and with a "hollow" throat, like you're yawning
