In other parts of the world 'Asian' doesnt default to East / South East Asian. While it's not used as a primary identifier, Iranians in Iran generally wouldn't have a problem saying they're Asian.

I say technically almost all Iranians are Caucasian. However it depends on your looks in the west. If you are brown you will likely never be considered white. The light skin Iranians are definitely considered white here in most circumstances.
As a half Iranian, I have experienced people assuming that I'm white more times than I can count. On the surface, it makes perfect sense to make this assumption. My family has white skin and I have more European features. But, what many do not know is that I have a deep appreciation for my Iranian heritage.
I'm Canadian, but also half Persian, and most people never would guess that, so I understand. Then again, most Iranians don't have that dark a skin tone so it's not easy to tell. Even people who are fully Persian, are still confused as being Italian or Greek very often. For the purposes of a census though, white is probably a better choice than Asian, which has somehow come to mean just east-Asian, even though the Greek word Ἀσία first used by Herodotus was likely in reference to the Persian Empire 😆

The fact that Europe deemed it necessary to set itself apart from the rest of Eurasia.. Living in Los Angeles, I have met and seen many Persian people. Some of them look very European. Some of them look more Indian. It's the same for the Lebanese people I've met and seen. Likewise, Armenians I've met and seen in LA/Glendale predominantly look European. I don't know what the best solution is but the racial classification in the census is outdated, and at least there should be a box for Middle Eastern people group.

Seems like Iranians with their Persian population are mostly tall or taller on average then a majority of European ethnicities in Europe IMO or the tall people of western Asia and look alot like Europeans. There are other tall populations in Asia as well like with the Punjabi of Pakistan and northwest India that look semi European or the tall people of central Asia and with East Asia the tall people are the Han Chinese in mostly northern provinces of China. Iranians are not a homogenous people. The original Indo-Iranians from the Sintashta & Andronovo Cultures were white - descended from migrants from the Corded Ware Culture of Northern Europe. These Indo-Iranians then eventually mixed with the darker-skinned indigenous inhabitants of Central Asia (BMAC) & Iran (Elamites). Later you would have invasions from Greeks, Arabs, Turks, & Mongols, as well as the importation of African & Slavic slaves. All of these people left a genetic footprint. Middle Eastern would probably be the best category. White usually denotes being of ethnic European heritage rather than necessarily being white skinned and having 'European' features as some Arabs, Turks, Iranians, Central Asians ans South Asians can easily pass as being white. Iran is technically in Asia but Middle Eastern is probably more precise as Asian can mean different things in different parts of the world.

The Term Asia has its Origins with different White Peoples. I say technically almost all Iranians are Caucasian. However it depends on your looks in the west. If you are brown you will likely never be considered white. The light skin Iranians are definitely considered white here in most circumstances.

As a half Iranian, I have experienced people assuming that I'm white more times than I can count. On the surface, it makes perfect sense to make this assumption. My family has white skin and I have more European features. But, what many do not know is that I have a deep appreciation for my Iranian heritage.
I'm Canadian, but also half Persian, and most people never would guess that, so I understand. Then again, most Iranians don't have that dark a skin tone so it's not easy to tell. Even people who are fully Persian, are still confused as being Italian or Greek very often. For the purposes of a census though, white is probably a better choice than Asian, which has somehow come to mean just east-Asian, even though the Greek word Ἀσία first used by Herodotus was likely in reference to the Persian Empire

Iran is western Asia, and all of caucasus was part of Iran. The culture history everything is Iranian, and north western Iran is more westerly than the Caucasus. The Elamites from Western Iran are different from Iranic people. Even their DNA is different from South Asians.
Seems like Iranians with their Persian population are mostly tall or taller on average then a majority of European ethnicities in Europe IMO or the tall people of western Asia and look alot like Europeans. couldn't be further from the truth, our people come from Caucasus, as in - by definition we're in the super-cluster of Caucasian, thus "white", even the name of the Caspian sea which our ancestors originate from - gets it's name due to the relatively pale skin of the inhabitants which were - and are closely related to us, the Turkish and the Assyrians respectively.
so we're not "lumped in" into the white supercluster, white is a relative word which wants to refer to Caucasians/Europeans/EU-descent North Americans depending on context - An Italian with even a dark tan with other Caucasian characteristics is "white", it's the problem with the umbrella term Europeans came up with in the first place.
Yet the context of the umbrella word despite not being color-accurate to us includes us in, it also includes Latinos, Greeks, Egyptians and other Caucasians.

the romans who migrated here thousands of years ago still poses a lot of graeco-italian traits such as shorter height, wider heads, yet have darker skin and darker color eyes than they used to due to the sun exposure.
and race-mixing here btw did not play an effect into this skin change, any demgraphic in iran has barely race-mixed due to the mountainous structure of the country that are seperated by deserts, clusters of people would barely interact to the point where each part of iran speaks a different version of persian (kurdish and mazandaranian being examples). they're still racially italian.
the reason europeans and americans have started making skin-color a basis for race and ethnic identity is simply because you kept mixing with each other so much and to the point you lack an actual race, the only thing you have in common is your skin color and not much else.
